Or your mother in law is coming to visit and you KNOW she is not going to approve. Or, you are on a walk and an elderly couple wants to say hi, only to be caught off balance by your overly exuberant pup! Or your dog greeted you, as usual, but your favorite outfit got muddy and you have no time to change. Or, find yourself apologizing again and again for the jumping, as if this is a surprise for you too? "Oh gosh, so sorry!" Try this: Practice the SIT command often throughout the day. Make sure to reward the SIT with praise and affection. You will know your dog is really getting the hang of SIT when you can use the command from a distance with success. You will know your dog is a champ when you can use the SIT command to redirect your dog midst activity! Then, begin to greet your dog by asking your dog to SIT! With practice, your dog will get better and better for sitting for all greetings, including greeting YOU! Redirecting your dog to sit is an easy way to teach them it is polite to sit for greetings. Changing behaviors takes time, and is unlikely to resolve immediately. But, if YOU don't greet your dog, unless they are sitting, they will learn faster. Reserve your happy, "Hi Buddy!" for when he is sitting! When you walk in the room, just stay very silent and still (unresponsive) until your pup's enthusiasm has died down a bit, then ask her to SIT! Only when she is sitting will you greet her. If she begins jumping again (don't be surprised), just stand up again and repeat being ignoring them completely until you can redirect her to SIT again!
