Many of the homes on Riverside Drive in Covington have been enlarged, modified, or torn down, but these stone rowhouses have stayed largely the same since they were built in 1854. There was a fire at the structure on the right (pic 2); you can tell that the front has been patched up. These were built and/or owned by Amos Shinkle at a time and, due to their location within steps of the Roebling Bridge, it's rumored that John Roebling once stayed here. The Hellman family was so numerous it can be hard to research, but it's widely agreed that this home was built for H. H. Hellman around 1863-1866. H. H.'s full name was Heinrich Hermann Hellmann, but he went by Henry. And Herman. He operated Hellman Feed and Grain on Madison Avenue, and was also a one-time owner of the Newport Flour Mill. Interestingly, that mill was taken over by goetta pioneer J. C. Dorsel. Henry was born in 1830 in Germany. He died in Covington in 1916. The best houses have the most names. This one is called the Mimosa House, and the Porter-Fallis-Lovell House, and Rodgers Mansion. It was built in the early 1850s by Thomas Porter as a Tuscan Villa that faced the Ohio River. The original home, in Italianate style, had a tower, gaslighting, and the finest furnishings. In 1861, Thomas sold the house to Daniel James Fallis, who had come to Cincinnati from Virginia in 1853. Daniel & Ann Poage Fallis had two children, John & Harriet. After her parents’ death, Harriet inherited this house. Harriet was married to Charles G. Rodgers. She wanted her Rodgers Mansion to be completely revamped to fit modern times. Around 1900, Harriet hired Cincinnati architectural firm Elzner & Anderson to make the house much bigger, and add the Colonial Revival porch with large columns to the now-front of the house. Harriet & Charles’ daughter May Fallis Rodgers, who was born here in 1865, died here in 1950. May’s husband was Howell Lewis Lovell, Jr., heir to the Lovell-Buffington Tobacco Company of Covington. Ann Pierce Kershaw, niece of May & Howell and wife of Judge Jacob Kershaw, next owned the property. It looks like Ann sold the house in 1950 to Mrs. Julia P. Giancola. Julia’s daughter sold the home to Dean Howe, Jr. Dean Howe, Jr., wanted to restore the home to its Rodgers Mansion-era glory, and turn it into a museum. He would have made Harriet proud: his Mimosa House Museum was open to the public until 1998. There were (are?) 5 mimosa trees planted in the yard, which led to the name. The house has been a single family since 1999. It still has an impressive collection of antique furniture and, I learned on a tour years ago, 13 working fireplaces and a lap pool in the backyard. The home originally had a tower; I think I found a picture of it from Dean Howe and @kentonlibrary. Sidney Arthur began construction of the first Arthur Apartments building, which contained 12 five-room apartments, in 1904. Each apartment had a "large, airy porch." Before the @kentonlibrary was built, the Arthur's back porches overlooked 90 feet of lawn & trees. Artist Lela Cooney lived in the Arthur, then known as exclusive, pretentious & elegant, and created 12 paintings for its hallways. Before the Arthur Apartments, there was an Arthur home on this corner. Thomas Kennedy (founder of Covington) built that home and lived there until William E. Arthur bought it. William, father of Sidney, was well known as an attorney, judge, and state & congressional rep. Sidney's mother was the second Southgate sister that William married. The first, Ada Southgate, died three years into their marriage. Etha Southgate was next; she gave birth to Sidney in 1862. In 1905, Sidney married Mary Thayer. The new Mrs. Arthur purchased the Kirtley boarding house from Lillie Dempsey, tore it down, and built a twin Arthur apartment building. There was once an Arthur cafe, with "an African-American waitress [at] each table." Although each apartment had a kitchen, in 1906, the Arthur banned cooking in the rooms. Their cafe had been losing money. In 1912, Sidney & Mary lost control of the Arthur & Thayer Apartments after several lawsuits. At auction, George Lubrecht & Thomas Phillips bought the property for $65,650. In 1913, Sidney & Mary divorced. In 1919, Sidney bought back into the property, then called Marzella Apartments. The co-owner was George Lubrecht. Sidney remarried to M. Ellen Morralee in 1920. They lived at the Arthur. Sidney still owned the apartments when he died in 1933. In 1986, the Arthur was "upgraded" & expanded to 64 units. No more spacious apartments for the well-to-do. In 2007, Peg Wyant of Grandin Properties bought the Arthur for $2.1 million. I think it's now at 58 units. Bring back the early days! I once lived in a Frankenstein apartment at the Arthur.

Amos Shinkle built this home in 1854 in the oldest part of Covington. Amos was THE richest person in the city. He built at least 40 houses in Covington and Cincinnati. Amos also brought gas street lights to Covington and financed the Roebling Suspension Bridge. An Enquirer tribute read, in part: “Amos Shinkle was a man in all the word implies. He was generous to a fault, but although he contributed thousands every year to charity, no one ever heard him say a word about it. He built the Protestant Children’s Home in Covington and gave it to the city. He attended the dedication of every Methodist Church in the Cov and for every $1 the congregation gave, he gave $1. He gave a half million dollars to Methodist churches and conferences. Mr. Shinkle left a fortune estimated at $2.5M and he does not owe it to anyone. He made every dollar of it by his own exertions. The bulk of Mr. Shinkle’s fortune was amassed since 1865 when he obtained control of the Suspension Bridge and First National Bank. The mansion in Covington in which Mr. Shinkle died...cost nearly $350,000.” That mansion was actually a castle. Amos' wife Sarah prefered this "more modest" townhome and reportedly stayed here. After Amos' death, Sarah donated the castle on 2nd Street to the Salvation Army. It was torn down in the 1920s for a new Booth Hospital. In 1982, when the 100+-year-old home needed some love, Bernie Moorman, a former Covington mayor, and partner Don Nash bought it from Earl King. They turned the house into a B&B that enjoyed success for many years. The home sold after Bernie's death and is now a single-family. There is a beautiful carriage house behind the main house; runaway slaves likely hid there. It still has a horse stable! St. Joseph Catholic Church actually survived the July 7, 1915, tornado that took off its top. The church was built at 12th & Greenup and blessed by Bishop Carrell in 1859. The Romanesque building, designed by Louis Piket, was 8 feet above street level with a 128-foot tower. The parish was predominantly German, just like the area of Covington called Helentown at that time. St. Joseph's "Old Boys School" was built on the cathedral campus in 1870. Torn down in 1929, the school was replaced by the only current surviving piece of St. Joseph's campus: Bishop Howard School. Today it's the James Biggs Early Education Center, surrounded by parking lots. The church got taller in 1878, when the clock and 110-foot campanile (bell tower) was added. The station pictures in the church were painted by Frank Duveneck; another renowned artist, Johna Schmitt, painted two St. Josephs for the church. In 1910, 10 large stained glass windows were installed. Only 5 years later, the "terrific tornado" happened. From a written description on NKY Views: the tornado "completely demolished the upper section of the massive church tower; the huge tower was literally lifted from its base and hurled below to Greenup Street." By 1916, the church had installed a new cupola and clock tower, designed by Samuel Hannaford & Sons. Bishop Howard Park today is located where St. Joseph's once stood. Bishop Francis William Howard was the Bishop of Covington from 1923 until his 1944 death. St. Joseph's Parish survived a tornado and 115 years, but it did not survive white flight. The church's solemn closing was held July 5, 1970. Covington had its first horse-drawn streetcar by August 1867, the same year the John Roebling bridge opened. By July 1868, Covington Street Railway streetcars carried 2,600 people per day across the suspension bridge. The Newport Street Railway was developed in 1867, connecting Covington and Newport via the 4th Street bridge. Dayton, KY, was reachable by horsecar by 1870. In 1875, the Covington & Cincinnati Street Railway connected the north-south Main and Scott Streets in a loop with the east-west Fourth and Pike Streets. In the 1880s, the separate streetcar companies consolidated into one: The Green Line. The Green Line converted horsecars to electric streetcars starting in 1890, and for 40 years, that would be the dominant transportation in Northern Kentucky. From the Encyclopedia of NKY: "A streetcar built around 1900 was a marvel of the woodworker's art. The car bodies were made almost completely of wood; the car floors under the seats were made of standard yellow pine, but the more durable maple was used for aisle floors. Interior trim, sashes, and doors were made from cherry and mahogany. Side and end panels were...yellow pine covered with a heavy-gauge steel." In 1929, the Green Line had 200 single-trucked streetcars that could seat 35. They had also bought 25 double-trucked cars in 1917, which held 50 passengers each. 14 million passengers rode the Green Line in 1900. More than 25 million rode in 1929. The Green Line also carried the mail until 1919. Two parlor cars were called the Bluegrass and the Kentucky. People could charter the more luxurious car that offered a refrigerator. The Kentucky car, built in 1892 and converted to a parlor car in 1912, was the one of the last operating electric streetcars in the US when it took its last journey in 1950. It was restored by @tankbus and now sits at @bcmuseum. Once roads started being paved in the 1930s, streetcars were used less and less. Motorbuses became the way.
