Aww man, this photo gives me all the feels. I actually grabbed it from Google Maps and cropped it. This is standing on the road just below where the gazebo was at my MaMaw's house in Ohio. They lived up on a hill (obviously). Just below is the village of Chesapeake. To the left, across the river, is Huntington, WV, and surrounding towns. And further on in the background you can see Ashland, KY, and it's surrounding towns. Growing up, I loved to watch the barges going down the Ohio River. Fireworks were glorious up there. You could see for miles. The property (well house) is condemned now. It was falling apart 20+ years ago and now it's just an overgrown mess. So sad. I sure miss my past. The people, the places. The memories are a delight but as I get older, they start to get just a little more fuzzy. Thinking about writing stories about them but not sure anyone would be interested. River stories.ย The Ohio River at Cincinnati. From the time I was a baby until I was four, we lived in a small house built on an old stone terrace overlooking the river. There were 40 stone steps down from the dead end of Saluterus St. in East Walnut Hills. My mother parked our pram at the top of the steps. Every time I go back, I usually find my way here to watch the turn of the river.ย This trip I hadn't thought about going. Then a new friend invented me to brunch and gave me her address. I couldn't believe it. She's in an apartment overlooking where our house used to be, looking down the river.ย On the terrace above our house, there had been an old log cabin where my first best friend lived. My new friend and I walked down stone steps and explored the very old cabin that is still there!ย When I was doing research this week in histrlorical archives, I found newspaper front pages of the devastating floods of 1937 that my mom remembers vividly from when she was 8. She drove down to the city with her father in their farm truck for the Red Cross, loaded with barrels of clean water. When they got to the city, everything and everyone was muddy and desperate for water.ย This morning, on my way to the airport, of course, I asked my taxi driver to take the Anderson ferry across the river. Today marks the 100th anniversary of Wheeling Steel's Benwood Mine Disaster, which occurred on April 28th, 1924. In the morning, two explosions in the coal mine led to the deaths of 119 men, the third worst mining disaster in the history of West Virginia. Many fatalities were attributed not to the explosions or fires, but the "afterdamp" of toxic chemicals like carbon monoxide that were worsened by poor ventilation in the mine. Neighboring South Wheeling, Benwood also had a major new immigrant population from Eastern Europe at this time, many of this victims were of this demographic. The Howard-built packet boat ๐๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ช๐ข๐ฏ๐ข (right) and another unidentified steamer in high water at Madison, Indiana during the Great Flood of 1913. The 1913 Flood was among the most destructive natural disasters in the history of the Midwest, with an estimated 650 deaths and more than $300 million in damage across 11 states. The Howard Shipyard in Jeffersonville, Indiana was one of the many businesses that sustained significant damage, although the family's mansion was fortunately spared from flooding (they would not be so lucky 23 years later in the Flood of 1937). The ๐๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ช๐ข๐ฏ๐ข was launched at the Howard Shipyard in 1900 for the Louisville & Cincinnati Packet Company, and spent her career running on the Ohio River between the two cities. In 1916, ๐๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ช๐ข๐ฏ๐ข burned nearly to the waterline while landed at the Cincinnati riverfront.
