Embrace failare. About a year ago I took on a personal Project and announced it to the world through the internet. I was going to post some type of writing about creativity everyday for 100 days. I have interviewed many artists and many of them really honed their craft and built their career momentum with a project like this. So, I went for it - and failed. Turns out I didn’t have 100 insights - I had about 22 😂 and once I had written and shared those I hit that wall I didn’t know where to go. I had made (in my reality) a big commitment to this idea and project. So all of my other creative output started to suffer because if I wasn’t fitting within with that project. I felt like I was avoiding it, wasting time on other outputs, not sharing other work, or needed to be looking for inspiration/motivations for the 100 list! There have been grandiose projects I have taken on and succeeded at and also many that I have failed at like this one. Failure is the best teacher. This time around I learned I can’t halt, hold back, or stop my creative flow simply because I decided I want it to only look a certain way and on a certain timeline. Focus is important but ignoring where your creative energy wants to work isn’t focus. I even love discipline. Especially discipline of creative exercises but this time I let my own rules stifle me for too long. Failed and learned. #clarkoncreativity #creativethought #creativethinking #creativedoing
🎭 The longevity of making art and your self awareness are incredibly intertwined. 💛 Slide to see some a peak of what I’m sharing with the Sunny Side Scribbles community this week! 👉 👩🎨 In some way, everyone is deeply passionate about some field of work. I label this passionate self “the artist”. Your artist self is the incredibly complex part of you that sees tremendous beauty or tremendous pain in places where other people see little or nothing at all. Your artistic self is confronted with big feelings all the time. These emotions can be confusing and overwhelming. 🌱 The whole point of art is for you to connect with an audience, a community, and to fuel change. 🥹 But when those around you don't see what you see and feel what you feel, this can lead to a sense of isolation and a general feeling of not belonging, or otherness. This restricts your ability to connect, which slowly pulls you away from your work and you begin to resent it. Moral of the story: 🥀 Difficult circumstances make great art short term. 🌹 Self awareness and maintaining mental health make great art long term. Today, in amazing humans: Our daughter Emma, who's hands are rarely empty, whether it be crochet hook, jewelry tools, paintbrushes, cardboard and wood glue, needle and thread or power tools and sandpaper. Creating houses and miniature furnishings, crocheting blankets, hats, purses, you name it! Cutting and sewing bowties for her Dad, cross stitch patterns, jewelry from beach glass, stones, buttons, etc... making cards, and gifts, as well as creating pretty incredible things out of a piece of wood. All self-taught, not a day goes by that she isn't creating something quite spectacular! Also incredibly patient and kind, smart (obviously!) and funny, an absolute wonder with animals (and people).
