Always at the forefront of our minds… reuse, recycle and reclaim. EXCHANGE WEEKEND in Mississippi Mills is coming up: a community wide re-use event! Have unwanted items that could be treasures to someone else? Put that velvet Elvis artwork, set of used golf clubs or the sideboard you’ve never refinished out on the curb for your neighbours to discover and re-home. Items can be placed on the curb starting this Friday May 3 until Sunday May 5. It’s a good idea to put a “FREE” sign on exchange items and keep anything you DON’T want to give away far from the curb. A friendly reminder: disposal of untaken items is the responsibility of the resident; the Municipality will NOT be picking up any items. You can: ✅ Donate items that are in good condition to the Hub or Rebound Re-Use It Centre (check accepted items and only donate during drop-off hours, please!) ✅ Offer items on one of the many local “Buy Nothing” groups online. ✅ If necessary, take items to the Beckwith Transfer Station. We are so proud of our Butterfield Resident Recycling Committee and all of our active resident recyclers! The beautiful plaque pictured here was awarded to BTV by Mayor Lioneld Jordan on April 20 and, very fittingly, is made from recycled materials. Since 1986, Butterfield residents have collected and sorted as much as 56 tons of materials yearly, diverting waste from landfills and allowing it to be recycled for additional use. Following a nearly two-year hiatus during the pandemic, recycling at BTV has been revived through a valued partnership with the City of Fayetteville. This year's award winners were Will Dockery (individual), the Pick Me Up program (community initiative), Fayetteville High School (young innovators) and Butterfield Trail Village (nonprofit). Unlike organs like the heart, lungs or kidneys whose parts and pieces work at the optimal level right as they are formed, the brain takes time to develop completely…25 years of time to be exact. It doesn’t mean that any parts or pieces of your brain are missing, but more so that some of those parts don’t fully mature for some time. This makes sense when you think about a baby…they don’t have the skills to speak words, problem solve, or figure out what time of day it is. Or take a teenager for example, they think they know everything there is to know about everything but they still have a very important part of their brain that hasn’t fully developed yet - the prefrontal cortex. This is responsible for decision making and cognitive control (discerning risk versus reward, for example). The brain develops and grows from the bottom up. Starting in the brain stem and ending in the cortex. And you want to know something mind blowing??...The single most important element to healthy brain development is RELATIONSHIPS and THAT deserves a whole post on it’s own. Pilgrims in Jerusalem, Israel The photograph in this Instagram post evokes in me associations with the profound historical movements of people who have left Europe to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land since the time of the Crusades. These pilgrimages, which often lasted a lifetime, were not only spiritual endeavours, but also adventures that were associated with numerous risks. Many of these courageous people never returned home. However, the longing to explore the unknown and discover oneself in a foreign land remains a timeless theme. These journeys symbolise how breaking out of familiar surroundings and overcoming security enables us to fully embrace and understand life. This theme is also reflected in Chaim Noll's book "The Desert - Literary History of a Primeval Landscape of Humanity", an impressive compilation of texts and thoughts Noll has collected over decades. Here, the desert stands as a human myth, symbolising death and life, good and evil. The book begins with the ancient Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh and leads through the biblical story of Abraham and the 40-year wandering of the Israelites through the desert. It also covers the story of Jesus, the Messiah, and his 40-day fast in the desert, as well as significant aspects of the cultural history of Islam and the Christian Church Fathers. It also deals with the beginning of the Crusades in the 12th century and their continuing influence on European culture.
