"Wenn du keinen Spaß beim Schreiben hast, wird dein Roman schlecht." Solche und ähnliche Aussagen haben mich früher tatsächlich oft vom Schreiben abgehalten. Es waren Meinungen, die damals (vielleicht auch noch heute, nur bin ich heute in anderen "Blasen" unterwegs) vehement und bissigst verteidigt wurden und sich soweit in meinen Kopf fraßen, dass ich mich nicht getraut habe, zu Schreiben, wenn ich nicht zu 100% Lust dazu hatte. 🙅‍♀️ Klingt verrückt, nicht wahr? Aber es ist wie es ist: Wir neigen dazu, uns von den Meinungen anderer Leute beeinflussen zu lassen. Wichtig ist es, diese äußeren Einflüsse regelmäßig zu hinterfragen und darüber nachzudenken: Stimmt das (für mich) überhaupt? 🤔 Deshalb habe ich mir in der aktuellen Podcastfolge 🎙️die Frage "Muss Spaß beim Schreiben immer sein?" einmal genauer angesehen und festgestellt: Nö. The key is to make writing a daily habit. Set aside a specific time each day to write your one word. It could be first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, or before you go to bed. The important thing is to commit to doing it every day, even if you don't feel like it. Over time, you may find that writing becomes a form of self-care for you. I love this quote from best-selling novelist Ann Patchett. It really speaks to the emotional journey we go on as writers. The words we put on paper never live up to the magical story we've conjured up in our minds, right? When do you get your reading or writing time in? Do you have a strict routine or grab moments here and there? Commutes used to be some of my fave moments, but now that I’m on mat leave, nap time is when I get most of my writing or reading done. Since I finished my latest draft and started approaching agents, there’s been a bit more focus on reading and catching up on all the great books I seemed to have missed these past couple of years. Sometimes I get a bit stressed out by it and have to remind myself that reading is supposed to be fun! 😅 Anywho, back to my book for another chapter before the little one wakes up! Sometimes, she’s in such a hurry, such a hustle, she forgets to stop and take in the scenery right in front of her. Breath shallow, she sprints toward the imaginary finish line, toward the next best thing, toward the next achievement. But today, she pauses and feels, really feels, the sunshine hot on her skin, soaking in the radiance that is both inside and outside of her weary soul. Today, she noticed the blue of the bluest sky, the way the wind lightly lifts her loose strand of her, the way the robin pecks at the ground. She inhales the musky scent of dawn and sees the branch on the tree she hasn’t noticed before. She looks up from her screens. She quiets her restless spirit. Feet planted in the grass, she closes her eyes and feels what it is to really just be…to just be quiet, to be still, to be who she really is when you wipe the muck of society and pressure and social media away. chapter 13 of Creek WIP is a wrap! Well now then this book. #currentlyreading almost done. I saw the movie in the theater. That would have been what, 2002? In hindsight I can say the movie flew as high over my head as Mrs Dalloway did the first two times I read it in the 2020s. Luckily there's always that third read. As for The Hours by Michael Cunningham, what a salve. What an arrogant ambition. To write Virginia's narrative as she's writing Mrs Dalloway. To construct storylines from her characters in different times with fluidity and synchronicity. To peel back despair and explore what happens when genius meets its devil, futility. To win the damn Pulitzer for doing this. The audacity of a writer who dares to write has never been on more flagrant display. I feel seen. Maybe even enough to keep going. #thehours #amwriting

Welcome to this hopefully-titled page… I went to the Bournemouth writing festival on Saturday and managed to get a quick snap of the beach but failed to get any pictures of the festival itself, oops! It was a great event with interesting speakers and sessions, from writing your first full-length novel, to editing, finding time to write, and publicising your work and promoting yourself as an author. I came away inspired and with a healthy sense of just how difficult writing and getting published is - lots of hard graft required! Creating characters can be so much fun, and it's also so super important for any fiction book! If people don't believe in your characters, they won't believe in your story. Fleshing them out with proper backstories, family trees, and relationships is key to making them "real" 💫 Think about it - when you're getting to know someone for the first time, you also learn about their family, their friends, work colleagues, partners and exes, people they bump into at the gym or the supermarket. They become part of their own mini world. That's what you're trying to capture with your characters. You might not include all the information in the book, but you, as the writer, need to understand who this person is and how they occupy their own little space in the world. Teaching at Arvon - all the delights 🤗 A full circle moment for me teaching life writing with coaching at The Hurst last week. I kicked off my first workshop with an extract from Ross Gay’s ‘Book of Delights’. In the preface he talks about developing a delight muscle as: ‘the more you study delight, the more delight there is to study.’ Writing is hard & writing about life can be particularly tough, so along with finding voice & stories, we found delight along the way. As Ross Gay said: “I felt my life to be more full of delight. Not without sorrow or fear or pain or loss. But more full of delight. I also learned this year that my delight grows - much like love and joy - when I share it.” By the end of the week we had a wall of delight - itself a jumble of joy of multi-coloured post it notes. But more importantly for the Friday celebration where the writers shared their stories, we cried & laughed (often within the same story) together. It was such a privilege to witness - a professional highlight as my story began at Arvon all those years ago. Happy Sunday all! Just sending some fabulous vibes out there for all my gorgeous midlife followers, along with these words of wisdom: if someone gives you a compliment, accept it! Even if it makes you feel super awkward 😬 just say a simple ‘thank you’ and move on quickly - don’t go into the usual self-deprecating replies like I often do, such as - ‘oh no, I look awful I haven’t had any sleep at all’ or ‘oh this old thing - no I think it makes me look fat’ ✋🏽 stop right there! Let’s own our unique, midlife gorgeousness ✨ On the other hand - what about the dodgy DMs that seem to bother all of us midlife women in Insta? Do those creepy guys not realise that leaving sickly sweet comments like ‘your eyes are so sparkly and your beautiful smile makes my stomach flip’ makes us want to 🤮 These pseudo compliments get blocked asap…Except the other week, I was just about to delete some weirdo’s constant barrage of DMs asking to be my sugar daddy when he messaged: ‘Hey beautiful, you’re fabulous!’ I couldn’t resist replying - yeah I really am aren’t I 😃✨ before blocking him 😂 I’m quite enjoying doing a few style reels at the mo - I’ll never be as good at them as some of the amazingly super stylish midlife ladies on insta, but that’s fine! Keeping it real in my reels is what feels right for me 😊 and I think I’m naturally more of a writer than a creative reel maker anyway. How about you? I’ll leave you with Jenny Eclair’s take on Breton tops (I love my new one at the end of this reel and it got lots of love in my stories yesterday)…she said she knows summer is over when she walks on stage and is confronted by a sea of Breton stripes.
