It’s finished! Here are some final photos of my Hepplewhite-inspired oval back side chair that was the focus of my presentation at Colonial Williamsburg’s 26th Annual Working Wood in the 18th Century Conference. Materials: Cuban mahogany (sourced from a Florida tree that was salvaged and sawn after Hurricane Wilma in 2005), ash, and pine, with hand-applied shellac finish and traditional upholstery The chair will be on display at a NH Furniture Masters exhibition this spring/summer. More details on that coming soon! In addition, I will be writing an article on this chair build for the upcoming 2024 Journal of American Period Furniture. This publication will be available to current members of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers at the end of the year. It was such a great experience to be part of the 2-day Fine Woodworking New England event at the Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking! There was a huge variety of demonstrators, presenters, tool dealers, and vendors. I was able to demonstrate and share some of the techniques and processes of traditional chair making, as well as catch up with old friends and meet many colleagues, aspiring woodworkers, and supporters of the craft. There was also an amazing display of my fellow exhibitors' work in the main building. It was great to be able to bring the chairs from my @finewoodworkingmagazine video workshop series so folks who followed the process could see them in person. I’ve been busy preparing for the Old House & Barn Expo that is taking place this weekend, hosted by @nhpreservation, at St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH. These photos provide a quick preview. Many thanks to @masswoodworks for the generous gift of European Beech marking gauges for my workshop program! These marking gauges (cutting gauges) are great for laying out joinery and for slicing veneer. The large fence surface provides good support and control, and the removable knife edge cutter allows for easy maintenance. Here are some more progress photos on the Conference chair build. As you can see, the back is really coming together. The splat on this chair is made up of three pieces. A central splat component joins from the mid-rail to the crestrail with mortise and tenon joints- the upper crestrail shoulder is curved to match the shape. The side components of the splat join the center component with mortise and tenons, and join the chair posts and crestrail with a unique mortise and tenon/slip joint that also has curved shoulders to match the shape. The photos include multiple stages of dry fitting the back, the working drawing for developing the build, and a refined pattern/mock joint for the splat. It was a fun weekend in the shop teaching the final workshop of the 2023 season, Letter Carving! Always a popular topic, the students learned how to carve straight, curved, and combined letters and numbers with serifs using Roman style lettering as the guide. Countdown to Registration!!! I’m excited to open registration for my 2024 Workshop Schedule on Friday, December 1. I was able to expand the offerings for this upcoming year by including new project topics as well as additional foundation workshops. I take pride in the fact that I develop and teach each and every workshop. With 30 years of experience as a professional woodworker and educator, I am dedicated to providing a high quality, supportive, enjoyable, and personalized learning environment for each student. Therefore, enrollment is limited to no more than five students per workshop. For those of you who are unfamiliar with my shop, the Salmon Falls Mill community is made up of a wide variety of artisan and small business shops and studios in the beautiful, rural, river-side town of Rollinsford, NH. Located about 20 minutes from Portsmouth and an hour from Boston, Manchester, and Portland, it is truly an inspirational space to work and learn. I’ve been working on a custom commission for the first of two jewelry boxes over the past several weeks, and wanted to share some progress photos. This is a collaborative project designed by @richardwatsonstudio (Brookline, MA). The primary wood is hickory, and the box has two drawers and a hinged lid with custom designed mirror, hardware, and tray inserts. I’m hoping to complete the final construction details and mirror/hardware installation in the coming week. I wanted to share a few final images of the Chippendale-inspired dressing box. It is made of mahogany and locally-sourced quartersawn eastern white pine, with a hand-applied shellac finish and period-correct Dutch drop brasses. The rectangular dovetailed case has ogee bracket feet and a serpentine molded front edge with a serpentine/blocked dovetailed drawer, and the overall dimensions are approximately 16”L x 8 ¼”W x 4 ¾”H. This piece, which is the focus of one of my project-based workshops (tentatively scheduled for July 2024), will also be on display at the upcoming Connecting Through Craft exhibit in Concord, NH. This is a collaborative event between @nhfurnituremasters and @leagueofnhcraftsmen, and the exhibit runs from mid-October through mid-December. I will also be exhibiting the reproduction Queen Anne side chair that I recently made for the Fine Woodworking magazine video workshop series. Had a quick visit at my shop yesterday with @peterfollansbee, @13starsfarm, and their students! Peter is teaching a 6-day JA chair class this week, assisted by Joel, at the shop of @petergalbert. I wanted to share some process pics of a current piece that I’m working on in the shop, a collaborative project designed by Al Breed. It is a 4-foot square ottoman in the Queen Anne style. The satinwood veneered aprons are mitered, and wrap around the tops of the leg posts. The structure incorporates hard maple internal rails that are joined to the legs with tenons. The cabriole legs are cherry with turned pad feet, and I’ve begun the process of carving the shells on the knees and the applied mahogany shells for the center of each apron. The entry chest build is complete! Surface preparation is done, and I’ve applied the base coat of thinned Danish oil. The piece will have a shellac finish, using both seedlac and super blonde. Here are some photos from the recent 3-day Chippendale Dressing Box workshop! This workshop was inspired by a Chippendale dressing box, circa 1760-1780 (North Shore-Massachusetts). The overall design is an ideal project to learn the methods and processes for serpentine and blocked furniture. The rectangular case has ogee bracket feet and a serpentine molded front edge with a single serpentine/blocked drawer. Students spent time cutting joinery, laying out the case and drawer blocking, cutting/shaping/fairing, making a drawer, and carving the small bracket feet. The carving is finished on the front facade, but I still need to do some clean-up on the grounding. It is really starting to take shape! I wanted to do a dry fit to see how everything looked together, including one of the drawer pulls that was temporarily mounted with double-sided tape. Still plenty of clean-up to do, but I'm moving forward with the rest of the build. Workshop Highlight! Soaring Eagle Plaque: August 26-27, 2023 The carved eagle has been a symbol of strength, courage, honor, and pride throughout history. The project for this 2-day workshop is inspired by the original works of John Haley Bellamy. The pattern has been designed for students to learn many techniques and procedures used in carving eagles. Topics and discussions will include: layout and design; methods to secure the work to be carved; shaping and modeling the profile; and fine detailing techniques. After completion of the workshop, students may customize the banner at a later date. Enrollment is limited to five students. We wrapped up the 4-day Hand Tool Woodworking Foundations workshop yesterday. It was an information-packed class, and the students worked incredibly hard! Workshop Highlight! Chippendale Side Table with Drawer: August 18-20, 2023 In this 3-day workshop, students will create a Chippendale side table that is inspired by an original period piece from Newport, Rhode Island, circa 1780 (image shown), from the Sotheby’s New York Auction House (January, 2002). The workshop model (in progress) has molded Marlborough legs, integrated ogee rail brackets, a rectangular molded top, and a molded lipped dovetailed drawer. Topics and discussions will include: project layout and procedure; cutting and fitting table joinery; cutting, shaping, and fairing rail brackets; creating internal components for drawer operation; building and fitting a lipped drawer; molding table legs, drawer front, and top; back beveling legs; and construction and design variations.
