You know what? I thought I was heading towards realistic type carving. You know, making things look like actual people. I'm pretty decent at a likeness in clay. But the more I carve them more stylised I am getting. Why? Because I'm just enjoying it so damn much. This is the guy the big feet belong to. I'm still not convinced about their size. I think they may need to be a fraction smaller. I'll ponder it some more. And this is the question moving forwards. Do I go with what I'm thoroughly enjoying and the path it's leading me down? It's all about the feet right now. I mean from the front they look ok. But from the side (swipe to see) they look allllll kinds of wrong, lol. The more I'm carving the more I'm finding my style. And part of my style seems to be quite chunky feet (so far!). But these are excessive. So I'm sitting here pondering how and where to alter them so I get them more in line with something that feels right to me. I think his legs just need to be narrower from front to back. You will stay attached!!!! So. I carved the part where the wings go into the hole slightly wrong, I didn't actually draw out the pattern right in the first place and tried to fudge it 🤦🏻♀️ Thins is wood glue likes the wood to actually be touching to give the best and strongest joint. It doesn't fill gaps or holes and make a decent joint. So the wings fell out, twice! I resorted to epoxy. Cept I got myself epoxy glue not epoxy putty. Now I'm just hoping that I can paint over it. Fingers crossed! Also debating whether to cut back the glue or leave it as is. I'll sleep on it. Decide tomorrow. Just so excited that they have their wings. Ooo and they've already told me their names! So most people get persuaded to do things by other people or sometimes animals (I'm thinking dogs and cats especially). For me it's the voices in my head that get me to do stuff. They're the voices of the creatures I'm creating, talking to me and telling me what they want. Sometimes they're very loud or very chatty. Sometimes they're really quiet. I've learned to listen to them as they're pretty good at guiding me. Anyway. As soon as Jas got his friend Wolf they persuaded me to take them out for a photoshoot. Neither wanted to be the baddie so they have ended up being on the same side. And spent most of the time watching out for baddies and hiding behind things, waiting to jump out and get them. Unfortunately we didn't come across anyone they could fight with (yes that request has already been lodged, lol). But we did have a lot of fun finding places for them to hide and wait for unsuspecting people. They look like they're on watch don't they? It’s finished! Here are some final photos of my Hepplewhite-inspired oval back side chair that was the focus of my presentation at Colonial Williamsburg’s 26th Annual Working Wood in the 18th Century Conference. Materials: Cuban mahogany (sourced from a Florida tree that was salvaged and sawn after Hurricane Wilma in 2005), ash, and pine, with hand-applied shellac finish and traditional upholstery The chair will be on display at a NH Furniture Masters exhibition this spring/summer. More details on that coming soon! In addition, I will be writing an article on this chair build for the upcoming 2024 Journal of American Period Furniture. This publication will be available to current members of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers at the end of the year. Miss Maddy is almost ready to go to her new home and I'm so excited!!! She's been signed, dated and has her name proudly displayed for all to see (well if they pick her up that is!). I love my signature. I designed it when I restarted painting in 2021. It's in the style of a chop. A Japanese signature. I am so influenced by Japanese art and culture. Does this help a little with the size of Miss Maddy? I always forget that most of my photos don't show anything that helps to show the size of the piece. Giving measurements helps a little. But it's hard to guess the size from measurements alone. It really helps to have at least one photo to show the size of the piece. I must remember to do this moving forwards. Ugh I hate surprises like this. Ones that aren't the good kind. Though I'm not a fan of surprises in general! There was no sign that I could see on the outside of the timber that this knot was in there (the darker bit circled in red). At least I think it's a knot. Although to be totally honest I never really look for them as Jelutong is usually such a clean timber it's really rare to find one. If you swipe across you can see the knot closer. The timber is much, much denser and the grain is all over the place. Makes it so much harder to work. Swipe again and you can see that there is no discoloration on the back of the piece. I would expect to be able to see the other side of the knot. There's nothing. The worst bit about it is how much it slows down the work. I was cursing it while I was working it last night as it's affecting quite a big area of the piece. The question now is do I carry on with this piece or put it to one side and just work on it as and when I have the energy to deal with it? I rode past some fallen Ash last week. One of the storm had taken it down and the council had stuck it by the side of the road. So I walked past and chopped some up a day later. It was a bit thin for the usual rounded spoons so I thought I’d try a bowl instead with the sides made of the bark-stripped branch. Carved this horseshoe crab from a coaster I cut out in middle school, believe it or not! I got pretty fixated on making coasters back then but have since realized they're too thick/weirdly shaped - so I've got a whole bunch I'm turning into wooden stamps. Printed with soy based akua ink.

Ugh it's still not there! I worked some more on the face of this figure. It's a lot better, heaps better, but it's still not quite right. It really doesn't 'go' with the carving of the body. First spoon carved in my new work space (scroll across to see). We have lived in this house for almost 30 years and I finally have a space to call my workshop, though that name is far too grand for what it actually is 😂. Still, it feels very special ☺️. Plum wood from @jacqui_smithroberts for this first spoon, and to borrow a phrase from Bilbo Baggins it was ‘as hard as dragon scales’, but gave a good finish. To be honest I can forgive plum anything because the colours and patterns within it are just magical. Richardson designed pieces of furniture we recreated for the Glessner Museum in Chicago , which we delivered December 5th of last year . It was quite an undertaking recreating the missing dining room furniture, but also a labor of love. Everything was researched & recreated based on two black and white photos including the hardware we custom made to match.
