Meet Philip Morley, @philipmorleyfurniture an Invited Artist of the NH Furniture Masters and one of three participating in our “New Members Show,” on display now at our Gallery in downtown Concord, NH. Pictured here is the Morley Lounge Chair. Philip’s passion for woodworking began in his youth when he was introduced to woodworking through a shop class in school. In the woodworking shop, Philip, who previously struggled in school due to dyslexia, found a place where he could feel successful and indeed excel. He pursued his passion by learning the craft of carpentry and joinery through the City and Guilds of London program, a three-year trade school program, working on various historical buildings throughout central London. Through his courses Philip developed a passion for fine furniture craftsmanship and pursued apprenticeship to acquire the experience and skill needed. In these apprenticeships, Philip gained experience with both furniture design and quality craftsmanship. Meet @danfaiawoodcarver, one of three makers participating in our “New Members Show,” on display through June 14 at our Gallery in downtown Concord, NH. Dan Faia has been a professional woodcarver, furnituremaker, chairmaker, and educator since 1994. He operates a woodworking studio and small group workshop program in Rollinsford, New Hampshire. When Dan isn’t teaching or working on custom commissions or period reproductions, he is usually busy in his shop pursuing his passion for traditional woodcarving. In recognition of his dedication to the art and legacy of period furniture, Dan was named the 2023 recipient of the Cartouche Award by the Society of American Period Furniture Makers (SAPFM). Building a folding screen. Composing the parquetry veneer panels (and book matched backs ), taping them together and then gluing the seams. Although these are commercial veneers, they are old enough that they were sliced at about 1/32”, just barely enough to edge glue the seams. Tricky, but a good idea if you don’t want the seams to show in a few years. ( I don’t). These veneer filtches were about 80 years old ( I was told) when I got them almost 40 years ago. Getting started on the folding screen… First I need three pretty big, flat panels. Good thing I have that press! Mill and rest basswood- repeat as necessary.. edge glue cross veneers of rift oak, 1/16” thick. Glue that mess together with non- water based glue. Recently completed restoration of Hans Wegner teak table and chairs. The table and 4 chairs were made in 1959 and needed a “gentle restoration”. The third pic shows the table as received. The chairs are Wegners iconic “round chair” designed in 1949 and also known as the “Kennedy” chair as this is the style chair used in the televised Kennedy/Nixon debate. This is a folding screen I made in 2008. I now find myself in a bit of a time crunch, having no new work and the Smithsonian Craft Show a month away. Two weeks ago I decided to revisit the screen, and now the race is on!! I have much (but not all) of the same European walnut veneers, and I think I can find good patterns in them. The first step is to draw and redraw the screen, then make panels while I start the process of “ sewing” together patchwork skins of veneer. The veneer is at least 50 years old, probably much older and is thick enough that I can edge glue the pieces together before laying them on my substrate. A companion ( sort of) piece to the jewelry cabinet on a stand. This wall hung jewelry cabinet is for the same client, each destined for a different offspring’s household, one more traditional this one more modern in style. The oddly and beautifully figured cherry was just a random board in a pile of cherry boards. The kind you buy and set aside, knowing they will have center stage someday. I love those boards- the “wow” moment when you find them and the “hmm” moment when you start to think of an actual use for them. —sometimes years apart! Inside, pear veneer and apple drawer fronts. Just finished this jewelry cabinet on a stand. It is one of two, and by far the more traditional. I’ll post the other one soon. The mandate was to provide hooks for hanging necklaces, etc… I had imagined having a foundry cast a bronze tree brqnch( lost tree technique)- but that fizzled so I too the torch in my own hands. Made my own vines, branches and hooks. My apologies to the jewelers and metalworkers for my soldering but… working in a less familiar craft is totally fun in no small part because the learning curve is so steep!! I had fun with brass and bronze rod and heat. Last steps on the interior of a jewelry cabinet. A late in the game change from pretty plain with shelves, etc… to classical columns and bronze vines and branches to hold necklaces and stuff. So…. Draw, turn, shape, finish, cut in half and attach column halves in a reversible way. Glad I had the Chippendale book with the column formulae! Fun to do in a math becomes art mode of thinking. Having only a metal lathe makes some things super easy and others a creative excercise. An Announcement from the Studio of David Lamb About 35 years ago I completed a commission for an extraordinary desk. It is a mahogany Goddard and Townsend, 18th century block front desk. It recently came back to me as the original owner has passed and the family would like to find a new and appreciative home for it. I relished the opportunity to make this piece then because any maker will tell you that it is a Tour-de-force of design and technicalities. The chance to make such a remarkable piece is rare and an extreme challenge. In addition to the beautifully sculpted and executed block and shell carved lid on the exterior, the interior boasts 14 block and carved drawers and a central cupboard with an additional 3 drawers as well as 6 mini drawers over the cubby holes. The material, color and craftsmanship are truly exceptional. The desk is being offered at a price substantially below a comparable new commission by approximately 50%. JERE OSGOOD in STOCKHOLM On my last day in Stockholm I almost tripped over a Jere Osgood Chair (Claro Walnut and Leather, 1993). The National Museum in Stockholm showed the exhibition: "Beauty and the Unexpected, Modern and contemporary American Craft". Chairs by George Nakashima, Wharton Esherick, Michael Hurwitz, Thomas Hucker and Garry Knox Bennett were also shown in the exhibition. In its permanent exhibition, the museum shows a piece of musik furniture by James Krenov (Musik-stand, 1978). 2023 Cartouche Award Recipient and newly elected member of the NH Furniture Masters, Dan Faia, was honored to have his American Rococo Entry Chest featured on the cover of this year’s edition of American Period Furniture. Shop made Japanese style marking gauge. I co taught last fall with Tim Rousseau and the whole class made these as a “perfect board” exercise with a useful, practical end result. Back in October, I entered two end tables in a woodworking competition being held by the Guild of New Hampshire Woodworkers #guildnhw . They were designed to match a coffee table that I had made previously. There were about 135 entries from several states as well as NH. To my surprise, I was awarded third place in the Contemporary Piece category. It was an honor to be selected, as the quality of the pieces entered was exceptional. Go to the guild website if you want to see the other entries https://gnhw.org/welcome-exhibition-2023/ We came home with the tables and set them up in the living room with the coffee table (which is in the process of getting a new top to match the curly maple of the end tables). Later that day, I received an email from the New Hampshire Furniture Masters #nhfurnituremasters asking if I would be interested in displaying my tables at their gallery on Main street in Concord. With such an honor, Della and I reset the room back to the old tables and brought them to the gallery where they will be on display until mid-December. Thank you to the judges of the competition for selecting my submission for its award and for inclusion in the NH Furniture Master gallery display. It truly is an honor to be allowed to display with so many great pieces. Thank you to Goosebay Lumber #goosebaylumber for the curly maple that I was able to buy for the tops as well as the maple used for the bases. Now to start planning for next years entry 😮. I will post some photos of the build process later.

“Satinwood Server” The satinwood and ebony table top lifts off and when turned over becomes a leather lined serving tray with a segmented rim of ebony and holly. A second table top also of satinwood is revealed and features a central inlay of three birch feathers on a walnut background. The column is curly maple. Furniture master Owain Harris and League juried members Rachel Montroy and David Ernster wanted to create collaborative works within the same structure of a rectangular cabinet, each putting their own "spirit" into the work. Some of the parameters they set for themselves were exploring patterns in nature, surface contrasts, and a limited color palette. "Overall, this collaboration was a stimulating challenge that opened up other avenues of thought for future projects," says Montroy. They each enjoyed the experience immensely and came away from it richer. Over the summer, Ted Blachly, Don Moss, and Heidi Edwards Dunn visited each others' studios and learned about their different processes for imagining, designing, and building a piece. Don's lamp incorporates curved twigs, recalling the sweeping lines and grace of Ted’s furniture. The precision of Heidi’s quilts inspired the square shade. Don's piece, in turn, inspired Heidi's quilt, and black & white became her theme stemming from Ted's table. I wanted to share a few final images of the Chippendale-inspired dressing box. It is made of mahogany and locally-sourced quartersawn eastern white pine, with a hand-applied shellac finish and period-correct Dutch drop brasses. The rectangular dovetailed case has ogee bracket feet and a serpentine molded front edge with a serpentine/blocked dovetailed drawer, and the overall dimensions are approximately 16”L x 8 ¼”W x 4 ¾”H. This piece, which is the focus of one of my project-based workshops (tentatively scheduled for July 2024), will also be on display at the upcoming Connecting Through Craft exhibit in Concord, NH. This is a collaborative event between @nhfurnituremasters and @leagueofnhcraftsmen, and the exhibit runs from mid-October through mid-December. I will also be exhibiting the reproduction Queen Anne side chair that I recently made for the Fine Woodworking magazine video workshop series. League member Diane Louise Paul was paired with NH Furniture Master Lynn Szymanski and juried member Lisa Almeida for their summerlong craft collaboration. Together, they created a key basket: Lynn created the wooden mold, Diane crafted the leather, and Lisa wove a tapestry insert with two keys. One of the things Diane said she loved about their collaboration is that they are all women artisans working with and creating beautiful art from nature.
