Jayden was born with an extremely rare condition called anterior urethral valves, a blockage in the urethra preventing him from passing urine that was swelling and damaging his kidneys. He underwent his first surgery at just two days old before having multiple stays and Sheffield Children's Hospital and two further surgeries when he was five months and nine months old. Throughout all of his prolonged stays in Sheffield we supported his parents, Sarah and Liam, at our two 'Homes from Home', Magnolia and Treetop Houses so they could be with Jayden throughout his treatment. It’s Thursday, so y’all know a new podcast episode dropped TODAY!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾 This week, I started a little podcast mini series. So for the next few episodes, I talk about little hints (called soft markers) on ultrasound that could tell me a baby has a genetic abnormality. In this week’s episode, I specially addressed abnormal fetal kidneys and how that could be associated with chromosomal abnormalities with the most common one being Down syndrome. Down syndrome happens when a baby has three copies of the #21 chromosome instead of 2 (one from each parent). Don’t get too anxious, dilated kidneys (also called pyelectasis or “upper urinary tract dilation) can be found in completely normal babies as well.
