She would stand in her crib and cry until her father came and lifted her out, and as soon as he did her tears would stop. The Sultan believed this meant he had a great way with children, and none of his harem wanted to tell him that Jasmine reacted the same when any of them lifted her out of the crib! She just hated to be confined in any way. That became even more apparent when Jasmine started walking. One of my favourite scenes in Aladdin (you know, if I could actually pick just a few favourites!) is this one, where the Sultan comes into Jasmine's room when she's upset and wants her to tell him what's wrong, and to help her feel better. Before now, we've only seen them disagreeing, the Sultan complaining to Jafar about his problems with Jasmine and Jasmine telling Aladdin that her father is "forcing her to get married". I think this scene is where all that starts to turn around, where we get our first hint that in the end, Jasmine's happiness matters more to the Sultan than that old scroll of laws. I drew on this scene for part of my Aladdin fanfiction, which puts the Disney characters into the Arabian Nights story. There's a similar scene in the Arabian Nights story where the princess confides in her father - but in the version I read, he threatens to run her through with a sword if she doesn't open up! Needless to say I could not see the Disney Sultan *ever* acting like that...
