Overweight pets!! (No this isn’t a training tip but just as important!) Did you know that 53% of dogs in the US are overweight? 😩 Why do we cringe when we see an emaciated dog yet look at a fat dog and think “Oh how cute.. he must be loved” 🤷♀️ We are doing our dogs a disservice by overfeeding and allowing them to become obese. Many health issues can arise from overfeeding and having an obese dog. Consequences of pet obesity: •type 2 diabetes •heart disease •osteoarthritis (arthritis) •increased frequency of joint injuries •high blood pressure •some forms of cancer - especially intra-abdominal cancers •Overweight and obese dogs usually have shorter lives than their fitter, normal weight counterparts If your dog is obese or overweight there’s no better time than now to remedy that!! Tips for pet weight loss: •food intake should directly correlate to amount of exercise (NOT what the bag of kibble suggests) • cut back on food for weight loss •have a veterinarian do a full check up to make sure there’s no underlying issues •cut back on treats (use a portion of your dogs daily kibble as a training treat) •absolutely NO “people food”!! Let’s talk about keeping your dog safe in your vehicle! 🚙🚘🐾🦴 Did you know that In a car crash at 35 miles per hour, an unrestrained 60-pound dog becomes a 2,700-pound projectile?? The force of that impact could kill both the dog and the car’s human occupants. Yet many of us drive around every day with our dogs just sitting on the back seat, or even on our laps. 😩 I see it over and over again, dogs unrestrained, dogs with their heads hanging out of the window, or in the bed of a pick up truck. Essentially they are a living missile. 🚀 Three main things you need to consider for keeping your dog safe when driving: preventing distractions, managing the dog’s deceleration rate upon impact, and keeping the dog restrained post-crash. Countless times after an accident dogs are lost or often hit by other vehicles. Dogs panicking and fleeing accidents through a broken window, only to be lost or hit by incoming traffic. 🚙 There are many ways to safely restrain your dog in a vehicle.
