The unusually pale coloration of Drosera binata 'Ghost' is expressed most prominently in the spring on developing leaves freshly emerging from winter dormancy. This cultivar originated as a bizarre mutation out of seedgrown D. binata in a European collection. Just a few years back, D. binata 'Ghost' was nonexistent in the United States and the plant pictured was imported from Germany as one of the first specimens to make it into the country. A few years ago, when I bought some small Sarracenia plants from a carnivorous plant nursery I was very excited, later in the summer, to find some Drosera capensis seedlings germinating in the moss at the rim of the pot. I used to grow Drosera capensis many years ago when in my late teens/early twenties, but after 5 or 6 years I got careless or distracted and lost all my plants and seedlings of the species. After so many years without my Drosera capensis it was nice to be treated to some free seedlings. They were carefully removed from the Sarracenia pot and given their own little pot where they wouldn’t get crowded out. A few years on and the biggest seedling is reaching maturity. This year I also have noticed what might be a Drosera binata seedling (check the last pic) Now that is a first for me, so I’m really pleased. I have also decided to employ these wonderful sticky carnivores to catch the sciarid flies which abound due to the rubbish compost we have to resort to buying nowadays. Last year I tried sticky cards traps suspended over the plants, but results were disappointing. Hopefully, this year the humid atmosphere around the sundews will prove enticing and attract the flies to become a source of nitrogen for my little freebies 😊 #droseracapensis #drosera #droserabinata #carnivorousplants #sundews

Non abito proprio in Sud Africa😜ma diciamo che le Drosere capensis e altre piccole collose si stanno risvegliando dopo un inverno comunque "caldo", comodo e risparmioso di stufetta, ma no Buono😡 Nel vaso grande c'è NOA una delle prime piante arrivate a casa. Era il....non ricordo😉 Ovviamente fornitrice di semi per tutte le altre💚più quelle invadenti. A couple Drosera flowers from the collection that caught my eye today. This is one of the handful of pots of carnivorous plants I have around the garden. The Venus Flytraps are living with the Drosera Binata. The VFT can catch the big flies and the Drosera B can catch the little ones on the sticky tips of its double pronged leaves. This summer, both species have been growing flowers and producing hundreds of seeds. If I had a greenhouse and the space to do it, I'd probably start growing them for sale. My Venus Flytraps have been loving it this summer. A lot of the traps are getting huge. If you ever get yourself a Venus Flytrap (VFT), don't keep it inside - they need full sun and a lot of it. They also need to be permanently wet because their natural habitat is in a bog where there is no nutrients for much else to grow. Carnivorous plants evolved to live in those condition by eating insects and getting nutrients from there instead. As a result, nutrients like nitrogen now burn their roots and are basically toxic to them. Fun fact: Venus Flytraps can count to 20. That's right. See those 6 little hairs inside the mouth? If an insect bumps one, it counts to 20. If it gets bumped again within that time, it will close. My Venus Flytraps have made seeds. To me, they make me think of spiders eyes and invokes feelings of tripophobia even though they aren't holes. Fun fact: Carnivorous plants have to make their flowers in really long stalks so they sit high above the part of the plant that catches insects.
