We have 3 types of Drosera (sundews) in the Pine Barrens of NJ, plants that are known for their carnivorous adaptation to nutrient-poor environments. This one is Drosera intermedia, the spatulate-leaved sundew. It’s fascinating to observe their tentacles adorned with beautiful jewel-like droplets composed of sugars to attract insects. When the sticky droplets trap an insect, the blade closes up a bit over its prey, which it then digests to obtain nitrogen (Drosera get about 50% of their nitrogen needs from insects). Drosera murfetii is a very bizarre southern hemisphere temperate species endemic to Tasmania. D. murfetii and the very closely related D. arcturi together constitute Drosera sect. Arcturia, a phylogenetically basal group of the genus that has maintained a handful of ancestral characters of early Drosera. D. murfetii and D. arcturi lack stipules, have a leaf attachment with margins curling around the stem, and possess suspiciously Dionaea-esque roots. These morphological characters (along with molecular data) place Drosera sect. Arcturia as one of the earliest diverging Drosera lineages, relatively close to Dionaea from an evolutionary perspective, much more so than posers such as D. falconeri that are in fact no more closely related to Dionaea than any other species of their representative section (being the petiolaris complex or sect. Lasiocephala for D. falconeri). D. murfetii represents what is essentially "just" giant D. arcturi with a distribution restricted to Tasmania (D. arcturi occurs across Tasmania, New Zealand, and even Victoria as well as southern New South Wales) that often (but notably not always, contrary to the 2014 description of this species) produces pink to red stigmas (vs. white in D. arcturi). In my experience, D. murfetii is a somewhat hardy species and has tolerated quite a bit of abuse in my collection over the years. In Eastern Washington State, D. murfetii appreciates being grown in a manner similar to Sarracenia (or another phylogenetically basal sundew, D. regia).
