They arrived on our island during the last ice age about 2.5 million years ago as the slow movements of massive sheets of ice moved along the land from the North. Heading south these Ice sheets picked up large boulders of rock debris and glacial till (sand and clay). When the glacier began receding or melting, this slush and rock debris left behind is what formed the island of Martha’s Vineyard. The rocks are more pronounced along its western side of the island where I often go for long walks and collect just a couple in my pocket of the most colorful and unique pieces which I use to make my jewelry. I ship the rocks to my stone cutter and he cuts them perfectly to my specks so I can create the jewelry pieces you see here. April's Backcountry Ride of the Month is the Massanutten Ring! We recently went up to Shenandoah County, VA to try our hands at the infamous east coast rocky ridge line loop on the Massanutten Trail and while neither of us were successful with our luck on the whole full-pull of the Ring this time around, we’re inspired by the route and the riders who have all given it a go and want to share more about it. The Massanutten Ring is a 68 mile loop comprised nearly entirely of technical singletrack accumulating over 12,000’ of elevation gain along the way. The riding is among the most technical the East has to offer (aka - rocks, rocks, rocks!) and requires a proficiency for punchy, rocky riding. Water is easy to refill in a variety of locations when off the ridge, and the loop crosses roads along each gap so support, caches, or point to point rides on the trail are easy to coordinate. The geography of the Ring is one of the elements that drew us to the area, the loop on the ridges create a unique nearly closed valley that drains north, with the ridges sandwhiched by the North and South forks of the Shenandoah River. In the link in my bio you’ll find a @ridewithgps collection with the entire Massanutten Ring route and two shorter rides we did to get a feel for the loop. 3rd place age group… for USAC National XC mtb Championship CUZ I SHOWED UP!! Everyone can agree the classic @tsestageraces 5 day race had the most heat ( perhaps of all time ?) but the 3 day race was also quite a burning hot little dumpster fire. Approach for day 1 was thus: “If I can stay upright and not break my bike or myself, it will be a good race. I have no business going all out on these trails for benefit of my own safety.” I haven’t raced unfamiliar trails in a long time and we weren’t racing on dirt sidewalks. Low and behold nearly everyone flatted , crashed or had some bad moments day 1 and I just thoroughly enjoyed watching wheels, being reserved and learning what I had to do on the #eastcoastrocks , arriving 1st in the 3 day open . Day 2 put my race IQ to the test as I was only up 1.5 minutes from 2nd place and really let it slip when I crashed out of any enduro time bonus chance and lost sight of the group- still got the stage win by 7 sec with a lot of hard and tactical riding the last 20 minutes . Day 3 was tough!! Puny training volume caught up with me and a loose, severely dusty climb off the bat crushed some people’s legs, straight into the roughest descent of the race week for me . Lost sight of the group but trusted the fitness and with a couple glimpses of my competitors ahead , knew I was ok if I didn’t make any mistakes . Gotta celebrate not being frantic and being selective with effort to get the W- and everyone needs a bit of luck. Very happy to finish healthy. No flats with my @vittoriatires #barzo and #mezcal tnt combo and yes the psi was high! Keep thinking back to the fun @trail_tayles and I were having last weekend. The 3 days of racing were made even more fun by getting the Queen stage of Cooper Gap, the amazing weather and getting to ride with my partner in crime and beautiful friend. I can safely say we owned our team name as we hooted and hollered down fun descents. I heard a couple of “Hell No’s” from behind and plenty from me on the uphills, and we might have been the only team that got to experience Rattlesnake Canyon with surround sound screaming 😁😂. Story time continues with #eastcoastrocks stage 3: Coopers Gap. @brettn13 and I entered the day down 7 minutes and concocted a plan where I would keep the pressure on the gravel climbs and he would send it on the single track to keep the pressure on. Through the first 12 miles we had clawed roughly 3 or so minutes back and looked like the plan was going to work. THEN tragedy struck as I caught a flat or some of those damn rocks and he took a flyer through the single track….yeah we never found each other again. Which effectively ended our GC hopes. The rest of the day was me spending a few hrs yelling at the rocks i so dearly love and climbing still house like a turtle. I felt the improvement as the stages progressed, taking 4th on stages 3, 4, & 5 in what I heard described as the strongest women's field TSE has seen in a while! #singletracksummercamp reflections for Stage 1 & 2 after a few days to decompress. Stage 1: was super something, not quite gravel not quite single track. I was feeling a bit stale but the spirit was high for the week ahead. Brett and I came across the finish line roughly 12 min down in the duo GC competition. My most regarded memory from stage 1 was the view at the top of the Poe Paddy climb aid station. Stage 2: was probably my second favorite stage of the week. It started at Tussey Mountain Ski resort and had a nice gravel climb before the single track. The single track was fun and not too rocky intact the flow trails at the bottom may have been my favorite trails of the whole week. This stage Brett and I took the duo win and clawed back 5 min in the GC. From a podium perspective this was probably the best day for us in the duo format. Who would have known that came from a Vineyard Rock? Just how I find mine my customer found hers! Rock info The rocks I use I found on the shores of Martha’s Vineyard where I have been living since 1986. They arrived on our island during the last ice age about 2.5 million years ago as the slow movements of massive sheets of ice moved along the land from the North. Heading south these Ice sheets picked up large boulders of rock debris and glacial till (sand and clay). When the glacier began receding or melting, this slush and rock debris left behind is what formed the island of Martha’s Vineyard. The rocks are more pronounced along its western side of the island where I often go for long walks and collect just a couple in my pocket of the most colorful and unique pieces which I use to make my jewelry. I ship the rocks to my stone cutter and he cuts them perfectly to my specks so I can create the jewelry pieces you see here. Last week @lucy_snowe and I were supposed to take on all 5 days, 140 miles, and 16,500ft of elevation of the @tsestageraces Trans-Sylvania Epic together. Unfortunately, Erin's broken collarbone meant that I had to roll solo. I've done a number of tough one-day events, but I don't think I've ever been as physically and mentally exhausted as I was after 5 days in a row of hard mountain bike racing on PA #eastcoastrocks. Still, the #singletracksummercamp 🚵♂️🏕 vibes were real, everyone was friendly and supportive, and I had a blast--or at least as much of a blast as I could have without my partner. My 3rd go @tsestageraces is done and dusted. Downright glorious conditions all week, not just for racing but also for living outside at #singletracksummercamp. It was great to see so many women taking on the #eastcoastrocks and really showing up to compete while supporting one another. After 4 days of racing, the women’s GC was all but decided, and I had the pleasure of rolling Stage5 with @kelly.catale and @jentoops rather than duking it out from start to finish as I’ve had to in the past. Happy to take 2nd in this stellar women’s field. @jentill1111 and I also spent our 5th anniversary together doing the things we love, playing bikes, sharing #vanlife with Ari BooBoo, and connecting with good people 💜 I’m incredibly impressed with those of you who took part in the TSE training group journey with us and accomplished that goal you set for yourselves at the beginning of the year. It was a privilege to grow and learn with you. Celebrate it! Many thanks to Ryan and the rest of the @transsylvaniaproductions crew for another week to remember and to the media crew of @bruce_buckley @iconmediaasheville @dirtwiretv and @dronediculous for capturing the best bits. Quite possibly my best day on a bike in my life so far, stage 3 ts mtb epic. Felt strong early and pushed down gnarly rock garden drops and up loose sandy climbs hard. Conserved a little and the energy lasted through the finish, was charging obstacles and sprinting to the line. And having loads of fun. Beyond impressed with @tsestageraces event. Same with the @yt_industries izzo that arrived just over a year ago (ordered two years ago). 90 miles and 10,000 feet climbed over really rough #eastcoastrocks has been an amazing three day experience! Shout out to my bud who came in from Denver to ride it out with me! The socks were a gift and of course I had to wear em!

Stage 5 of @tsestageraces was a brute of finish. Not sure if this was my Swan’s Song to Transylvania Epic, or if I’m hearing a Siren’s Song that will always call me back. I’m just glad I had such a full experience. I’m also honored to have earned the #eastcoastrocks belt buckle for having ridden at least 500 miles (I’m probably at 850 now). Props to @chrisneyen for coming up with that term in the ‘90s. Four down, one to go! There were a lot of unknowns going into this week. I’d never done a stage race before. My left knee was far from 100% and I had no idea how it would react to even a single day of pedaling, much less five. Honesty, I didn’t know how I would handle “party pace” racing mentally. I’m competitive and it’s hard to know that I’m not in peak form and can’t race my best (though I’m equally aware that my best for this week is all I’m able or expected to give… even when that has no comparison to what my best might be if I hadn’t crashed in Arizona). But with just one day left of the @tsestageraces, I can confidently say that this week might be some of the most fun I’ve had on a bike! I am absolutely loving all of the #eastcoastrocks — something I never thought I’d say just a few years ago! The trails are stunningly beautiful, and dialing back the effort to keep my knee happy has meant ample time to admire the scenery, plus lots of conversations with new mtb friends along the way! Here’s to #singletracksummercamp and a fantastic week riding bikes with friends!!
What is Grinduro PA’s course like? Roll through quaint country towns like Hillsgrove and Eagle’s Mere. Climb up to State Park vistas and storm down rocky Pennsylvania trails. Rattle through a covered Bridge to complete the ride at Elk Creek Escape, the old little league campground. Riding into the Memorial Day weekend with some fantastic weather! Speaking of which, we recently got out on some Rothrock State Forest gravel and rocks, I mean trails. In the past, I raced the Wilderness 101 and explored the trails around Bald Knob and Coopers Gap, but had never hit Tussey Ridge. Decided to change that last week, and put together a route with a few of my favorite Rothrock gravel bits and add in the Tussey Mountain Trail and John Wert Path, two classics on Tussey Ridge. It was a good (although bumpy) one! Follow the link in bio to the @ridewithgps long version of the route that we rode. Pressed on time? You can skip some of the gravel and follow the short version also linked. Tip: Ride the long version if you can. The Laurel Run Road descent to Whipple Dam State Park is eight miles of perma-grin, and one of the best you will find! Wanna race in this area? Stage 3 of @tsestageraces was the one I’ve been dreading: Coopers Gap. Rarely to people ride this area for fun, it’s more for beat downs. And today was that, though with some fancy new trails (to me) thrown in so now it is kinda fun. Except the Stillhouse climb. No wonder I never did it myself before, and no wonder all the racers hated me when I was part of the @transsylvania organizing team. I started about an hour & a half early today so I could see how the front of the race looks (and make it back in time for dinner). It was a 9-mile head start, and the leaders caught me at mile 14. Though I definitely did more hike-a-bike than them. Today’s new experience: Being filmed by a drone. Hope @dronediculous posts it with more Van Halen music. Going into Stage 1 of @tsestageraces 2023, @kelly.catale faced a lot of unknowns. Although accomplished in marathon racing, this year’s Epic is her first attempt at stage racing. “I’m going into this with a bit of a Wild West feel right now,” she admits. “I’m not really sure what to expect.” What is known, however, is that Catale is coming off an impressive 16th place finish in the MTB marathon at Nove Mesto World Cup two weeks ago and she’s carrying good form. She’s also a Bucknell alum, who has raced the Wilderness 101 on many of these same trails. That familiarity would prove valuable, as Catale had to face former TSE winner @britty27 From the start of Stage 1 through Bald Eagle State Forest, Catale established position, darting into the singletrack ahead of Mason. More importantly, Catale was able to use the mixed-field mass start to put some traffic between them. “Kelly got into a group and I ended up solo for a bit on stuff that was draftable,” Mason recalls. “I definitely didn’t want to go any harder to chase her down. It’s too early in the race for that.” Still, Mason’s pace was high enough to keep her ahead of another podium contender Jen Toups. The two recently faced off at Pisgah Stage Race, where Toups took 2nd and bested Mason by almost 13 minutes. “This stage is more gravely than the others and that is one of my weaknesses,” Toups says. “I’m looking forward to the technical stuff.” The gaps held and Catale finished the 30-mile stage in 2:16:34 (13.2mph) with Mason at 1:33 back followed by Toups at +6:25. “I’m a fierce competitor and it was hard for me to dial it back today,” Catale says. “I’ve never done a stage race before and I’m not sure how my body will react. This is me leading the enduro, my big mistake on the day. With 30/20/10 second time bonuses for top three in the enduro I placed 4th. No time bonus.
