I’m a sucker for nostalgia and @davidmleitch @thefallguymovie is all that, and more. For those of you old enough to watch the TV series, back tin the eighties, you would probably get the same excitement as I did watching all the call-backs in this film. Not only that, there’s also a cheeky homage to Lee Majors’ other TV show: The Six-Million Dollar Man in a blink and you’ll miss it scene. @thefallguymovie is a fun movie throughout, kind of like watching McG’s original Diaz, Liu, Barrymore’s Charlie’s Angels for the first time again. Crazy, over the top action sequences with a dash of humour, some that sticks, and some don’t. But I don’t mind, I came to be entertained, and the movie delivered. Overall this movie is an appreciation to the film crew, not only the stunt guys, but also producers, ATD’s, PA’s, DOP’s, props, pyros, soundman, and wverything in between. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s chemistry is off the chart. Not only during action scenes, but their comedic timing is also on point. Probably explains why their banter at the Academy Awards was so good. Go see this movie on IMAX. It’s that much fun! Also stay for the post credit scene for a special cameo, or two. Side note: Not often do I get teared up watching an action movie end credit, but the use of @therealleemajors The Unknown Stuntman; the original theme song, brings me back to my good old TV watching days with my old man. 2024 Movies #194 The Fall Guy - ★★★½ (2024) Directed by David Leitch 70/100 In a single scene Ryan Gosling also played a stuntman in a better film. Now don't get me wrong, this wasn't a bad experience at all, but let's just say I was left craving for more because the film promised a lot more. Ironically The Fall Guy is an action/comedy movie and at the same time a romance, but if you want my honest opinion, the romance is the least important aspect of this story. The chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt is never genuinely palpable and their romance is more of an excuse to give some logic to the storyline that Gosling's character follows and that is basically the core elemento of the whole plot. Frankly, there's not much to exploit in that particular plot department either. The conflict itself is pretty simple, and I was surprised to see the poor villain that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is in this film. Basically a caricature of a douche-bag with nothing to offer outside the attitude. The truth is that the real highlight of The Fall Guy is the action and the somewhat tribute it makes to the work of the stuntmen. That's where the soul of this film lies, where the fun and entertainment resides. Where this film blossoms and works better. Certainly, it's a shame that the plot doesn't live up to the spectacle, but sometimes when the explosions and the action moments have quality, it can soften the blow of the areas where it falters. The Fall Guy was good, but it wasn't exceptional, and that's fine. There is no doubt about the fact that remakes are usually derivative and pointless, and as an utter detractor of this kind of films, I was going with cautious skepticism towards “The Fall Guy”. David Leitch, the director, surely has a flair for bringing out some heart-thumping action, though much of his style withers away without the flair. Ryan Gosling appears to be having the best time of his life in this work. The timing in his comic character is flawless, and he shares an undeniable, indescribable chemistry with Emily Blunt that is guaranteed to win everyone over. Also, the movie doesn’t wears its intentions on its sleeve, it’s a brainless popcorn flick, an utterly fun take on an action comedy. Sadly, the entertainment wanes of the film after a while. The script is okay, not properly thought out or intricate, and the humor slips into cheesy at times. The storyline unravels to just get messier and messier, so by the second half, it’s hard to care.
