Piece by piece, this singer-songwriter has grown into a musician for the world and a woman for herself. But while we might recognize her from the heart-healing subaquatic serenades of Titanic Rising or the ethereal beachfront shenanigans of Front Row Seat to Earth, the fact that this artist's epiphany of individuality has been a gift does not discount her earlier efforts as an experimental mind tucked away in darker shadows. The woman we know as Weyes Blood might have reached her full bloom as a performer now, but her roots are much more intense than one could possibly imagine. The teenaged edition of the Weyes Blood title carried a different kind of weight. 2007's Strange Chalices of Seeing was no stranger to folk music, but it uses this encyclopedic knowledge of strings and guitars to turn the ideas of "how", "where", "when", and "why" completely upside-down. This cat-embossed cassette plays with spools of tape as though they were nothing but trinkets and toys in the first place. It spits garbled gothic atmospheres from a pursed-lipped mouth on the regular, only ceasing this graveyard shift as a supernatural ticket machine when the young woman behind the Weyes name finds it most impractical to do so. This unexpected debut album did not expect any expectations from what was surely a small and scattered fan base at the time, but a low profile and an even lower budget only pushed these avant-garde sounds to pursue more ambitious destinations. There's no end to the ideas that Natalie Mering raises and then sends away over the course of this tape. The flustered noise of Deep in the Minor Arcana, the ghostly folksiness of the Ballad of the Broken Skull, and the abstract fire of Remote Beach at Avernus are all vastly different to the soft baroque buoyancy of today's Weyes Blood, but one still gets the sense that there would be no Titanic Rising without Strange Chalice of Seeing to first drain the blood from the sea. ★★★½
Crank: 📀📀📀📀📀 (5/10 discs) An all out balls to the wall electric thrill ride that takes all sorts of basic common sense and just simply throws that out the window. In the nice 80 to 90 minute movie you are left with a fun thrill ride that is thoughtless, but entertaining as hell! Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) wakes up to a DVD showing that he plays, then sees that his enemy, injected him just moments before with a Chinese synthetic that is going to shut down his heart. The only way to stop it? By upping his adrenaline. I normally would say something like this would be beyond stupid, and this is in someways that but I’d say both actors and directors know how this is and everyone goes for it and it makes it better. #CivilWar I haven't done a film piece for a while and need to start getting back into it. There's been a few films I've seen these past few years where I've almost been wowed to come back and write about it but Civil War is the push I needed. Alex Garland has created a cinematic masterpiece. I'll admit that I have been losing faith in film/TV recently, just haven't found the same enjoyment that I used to enjoy. Civil wars story starts off a little slow but it's purpose is to wind us in with a bang and catch us off guard. It's a grim showing of what a civil war could bring to not just America but any country. Journalism is a strong focus in this film, a photo can say a thousand words as they say. I think this film really captures the brutality of a future that it's trying to warn us about, things in the world sometimes can be tense and terrifying. Humans if lost and unguided can do terrible things but also can do great things and capture moments that speak these thousand words. The film's sound quality is tremendous, it's clear and powerful, the clicks of the cameras taking photos, fires blazing, gunfire peppering the cities. The music is engaging and takes you along this dramatic journey. Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moira, Cailee Spaeny and Stephen McKinley Henderson all were fantastic and played their parts well. I was gripped with every one of their stories together. I have to go back to the cinematography. Simplistically it's all visual art, each shot portrays a life or story around it with the depth of the Civil War in front. Corpus Offal – Demo 2024 [Demo] --- --- --- Release year: 2024 Corpus Offal might be a new band at the Death Metal firmament, but its bandmembers for sure are no stranger to Extreme Metal in general and Death Metal more specifically. The band was founded in the earliest weeks of 2024 by current and ex-bandmembers of bands like Demoncy, Autophagy, Cerebral Rot, Crurifragium, Fetid, Caustic Wound and Bell Witch. While the majority of those bands might sound very different from each other, the four musicians behind Corpus Offal are picking bits and pieces from all of that impressive hotchpotch. With ‘Demo 2024’ the band is showcasing their potential through its 13 minutes, that is divided in two rather lengthy tracks. And, indeed, while the band’s core comprises Old School and rather murky Death Metal, there is lots of different things going on here.
