Are you stressed about something in particular? Try writing about it and see how that helps! Do you know that writing is beneficial to our mental health? There are over 200 studies to prove this. How exactly does writing help improve our mental wellbeing? One theory suggests that bottling up emotions can lead to psychological distress. Writing might improve our mental health because it offers a safe, confidential and free way to disclose emotions that were previously bottled up. Another theory suggests that writing may help increase our self-awareness, which is key in managing our emotions and therefore, mental health. In essence, self-awareness is being able to turn your attention inward towards yourself. By turning our attention inward, we can become more aware of our traits, behaviour, feelings, beliefs, values and motivations therefore, more accepting of others. Writing about a traumatic experience or grief may help process the difficult experience, thus opening up your mind for healing. There are different types of writing in this context: journaling, expressive writing, reflective writing, creative writing... all of which can be used for therapy. April is Adenomyosis awareness month. Adenomyosis is a condition in which the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) breaks through or invades the muscle wall of the uterus (the myometrium). The condition can either be located throughout the entire uterus or localized in one spot. Here's your weekend reminder that not every gynaecologist is skilled at treating (or managing) endometriosis. If you are opting for endometriosis surgery, you want to ask your doctor the right questions: e.g his/her qualifications (yes you can ask politely), trainings or fellowships completed on minimally invasive surgical skills, the techniques he/she will use in removing the endometriosis nodules, lesions or implants; and possibly reviews of patients who have had similar surgeries. As an organization, we advocate for excision surgery which should entail the complete removal of the endometriotic deposits - often with wide margins, to reduce likelihood of recurrence. Endometriosis and fertility. Let’s talk about it. Endometriosis can make it more difficult for individuals to get pregnant. However, around 7 in 10 women with mild to moderate endometriosis conceive without treatment. Endometriosis comes in four different stages: 1-4. If you know you have a more mild case, a stage 1 or 2, you should try on your own first. If you’re unable to conceive on your own, then seek fertility care immediately. From there, depending on your medical history, an IUI might be the first recommended line of treatment. With more severe endometriosis, stages 3-4, seek help from a fertility specialist as soon as you’re ready to conceive. The recently launched report by the @worldeconomicforum and @mckinseyhealthinstitute, titled "Closing the Women’s Health Gap: A $1 Trillion Opportunity to Improve Lives and Economies" highlights the disparities in healthcare experienced by women; and the report specifically mentions menstrual health and endometriosis🫠. Women may encounter barriers related to access and affordability of health services which greatly affect their lives and livelihoods. It's good to see these concerns are being discussed on global platforms - a welcome change! The report also calls for direct investment in women-centric research to fill the knowledge and data gaps in women-specific conditions, as well as in diseases affecting women differently and/or disproportionately.
