John Len Chatman “Memphis Slim” (Tennessee, 1915–1988) Legendary blues singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist who added a postwar sophistication to barrelhouse/boogie-woogie piano. His father Peter Chatman led a group called the Washboard Band, which featured the influential blues pianist Roosevelt Sykes. In 1939 he moved to Chicago and quickly found himself in company with Big Bill Broonzy and “Sonny Boy” Williamson. With a suggestion from Bluebird producer Lester Melrose, Chatman began performing under the name Memphis Slim. He made his recording debut in 1940 with his trademark song ‘Beer-Drinking Woman’. Soon Slim hooked up with Broonzy and they had four great years together during which Slim took Bill’s advice to try and sound less like Roosevelt Sykes and more like himself. Slim began his own band following the end of WWII. The band, called the House Rockers, reflected the national craze for jump-blues. Memphis Slim moved to Lee Egalnick's Miracle label in 1946 and began cutting some of his most influential and enduring recordings. While songs such as "Rockin' The House," "Messin' Around," and "Angel Child" all became hits for Slim, others like "Nobody Loves Me" (more popularly known under the title "Everyday I Have the Blues") became blues standards and huge hits for later artists like B.B. King. Throughout the 1950s, Memphis Slim also collaborated often with bassist Willie Dixon. With the introduction of rock ‘n’ roll, the American audience’s interest in traditional blues began to wane. In response, Slim and Dixon left America and began performing internationally.In the early 1960s, Slim became one of the first artists to sign on when German promoters, together with Willie Dixon, proposed the European blues concert that would later become known as the American Folk Blues Festival. Memphis Slim ! Un bel anniversaire à Memphis Slim, né aujourd’hui, un 3 septembre, en 1915, à Memphis, Tennessee, Etats-Unis d’Amérique, sous le nom de John Len Chatman. Un des plus grands artistes de Blues, Memphis Slim est pianiste, chanteur et compositeur, écrivant des chansons parfois humoristiques, parfois politiques, parfois très engagées, avec une conscience sociale et humaniste très belle, très forte. Un de ses morceaux, « Every Day I Have The Blues » est devenu un standard, repris par de nombreux autres artistes. Durant sa vie, il a enregistré plus de 500 morceaux. Memphis aurait pu être rebaptisé ‘Paris Slim’ car il vient s’installer à Paris en 1962, et y restera jusqu’à sa disparition, en 1988. Il joue souvent dans la cave du restaurant et club de Jazz et de Blues, Aux Trois Mailletz, lieu mythique s’il en est, toujours là aujourd’hui, toujours aussi populaire. S’il décède à Paris, la tombe de Memphis Slim est au ‘Galilee Memorial Gardens’ à Memphis, Tennessee. Sur celle-ci sont gravés ces quatre mots, en majuscules : « AMBASSADOR OF THE BLUES ». Memphis Slim a été aussi décoré par Jack Lang, alors ministre de la culture, en tant que Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres. À Memphis Slim, Paris et la France reconnaissantes.
