OTD in Music History: Legendary Jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899 - 1974) is born in Washington, D.C. The scion of a proudly middle class black family (his father was a butler to a wealthy household who also sometimes worked at the White House), Ellington was always artistically oriented. He originally had ambitions of becoming a painter -- but he became interested in music after early exposure to the "stride" piano music of James P. Johnson (1894 - 1955), and soon thereafter he joined his first Jazz band. In 1923, Ellington moved to New York and founded his own band, and within a few short years they were hired to play at the famous "Cotton Club." Because Cotton Club performances were broadcast on the radio almost nightly, by 1930 Ellington had become a household name across America. That decade also saw Ellington start churning out the series of recordings and original compositions that would cement his musical legacy -- including "Sophisticated Lady" (1933), "In A Sentimental Mood" (1935), "Prelude To A Kiss" (1938), "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart" (1938), "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" (1941), "Don't Get Around Much Any More" (1942), "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me" (1943), "I Didn't Know About You" (1944), and "Satin Doll" (1958). Fellow noted Jazz composer and arranger Gunther Schuller (1925 - 2015) once summed up Ellington's career as follows: "Music was, indeed, his 'mistress.' In fact it was his total life, and his commitment to it was incomparable. In Jazz, Ellington was a giant among giants. And in Twentieth Century Music more broadly, he may yet one day be recognized as one of the half-dozen greatest masters of our time..." I was finally able to take Benji to a couple of places that were & still are, a major part of my life. Firstly, the Carlton Football Club was where I spent a large portion of my weekends. Seeing the club as it is now was fantastic. We were hoping to possibly see a player or 2 but we were there at the right time for Benji to get pictures with most of the senior players. His excitement level was through the roof, especially after fist pumping his favourite player "Crippa". All the team were absolutely amazing with him, spending the time to talk & have a photo with Benji. Then we got to go to the home of AFL - The MCG. 88,000 people & the "G" was pumping.
