En mayo de 1996 Eva Cassidy publicaba su álbum en directo grabado en el club de jazz "Blues Alley" de Washington D.C. en enero de ese mismo año, un garito donde ha tocado y grabado discos cualquier nombre importante del mundo del jazz que se os ocurra. Este fue también el último disco publicado por la cantante / guitarrista ya que murió ese mismo año a los 33 años como consecuencia de un cáncer. En vida nunca tuvo el reconocimiento que merecía, así que fue ella misma quien puso la pasta para esta grabación. Fue unos años después de su muerte cuando sus discos fueron un auténtico éxito en England, consiguiendo varios números 1 y más de 10 millones de discos vendidos, tambien entro en las listas de éxitos de Australia, Alemania, Noruega, Suecia y Suiza, pero como digo un par de años después de su muerte. "Live at Blues Alley" sirve como ejemplo de los gustos eclécticos de Cassidy, que abarca artistas clásicos y contemporáneos desde Billie Holiday hasta Sting, incluidos Al Green, Pete Seeger, Irving Berlin... Jenkins is one of the best of the recent wave of young African American musicians doing a deep dive into pre-war blues, string band, and other roots music, and developing their own sound based on these acoustic styles. An early member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Jenkins is now exploring his musical path as a solo artist. Guitarist Leonard “Lowdown” Brown relocated from Chicago to Houston in 1981 and over the last 43 years has made a name for himself as one of the most versatile musicians on the blues scene there. On the heels of his critically acclaimed 2023 CD, Blues Is Calling Me, we talk with Brown about his musical journey. Photographer and researcher Axel Küstner first traveled from his native Germany to the United States in 1978 where he explored the backroads of the blues, tracing its roots. Over the next 13 years Küstner recorded and photographed dozens of rural blues artists at their homes. We present a collection of some his rare photographs. This issue’s Let It Roll focuses on Georgia-born Tampa Red. The artist grew up in Tampa, Florida, and by 1925 had mastered his slide guitar technique and moved to Chicago. On the heels of his 1928 hit Selling That Stuff / Beedle Um Bum with Georgia Tom Dorsey as the Hokum Boys, Tampa became a major figure in the urban pre-war blues scene. In this issue’s column we explore his years with Lester Melrose and Bluebird Records and focus on an October 11, 1937, session featuring Blind John Davis on piano. HEY LOCO FANS – Rhythm and Blues singer Big Maybelle was May 1, 1924 in Jackson, Tennessee. Born Mabel Louise Smith, she sang gospel as a child; by her teens, she had switched to rhythm and blues. She began her professional career with Dave Clark's Memphis Band in 1936, and also toured with the all-female International Sweethearts of Rhythm. She then joined Christine Chatman's Orchestra, and made her first recordings with Chatman in 1944, before recording with the Tiny Bradshaw's Orchestra from 1947 to 1950. In 1952, she was signed by Okeh Records, whose record producer Fred Mendelsohn gave her the stage name 'Big Maybelle' because of her loud yet well-toned voice. Her first recording "Gabbin' Blues", was a number 3 hit, and was followed up by both "Way Back Home" and "My Country Man" in 1953. In 1955, she recorded the song "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On", produced by up-and-coming producer Quincy Jones, a full two years before rockabilly then rock and roll singer Jerry Lee Lewis's version. Lewis credited Smith's version as being the inspiration to make his version louder, more raunchy and raucous, with a driving beat and a spoken section with a come-on that was considered very risque for the time. More hits followed throughout the 1950s, including "Candy" (1956), one of her biggest sellers and one that received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999. During this time, she also appeared on stage at the Apollo Theater in New York City in 1957, and at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. After 1959, she recorded for a variety of labels, but the hits largely dried up. By the 1960s, Maybelle's drug use began detrimentally impacting her career. Smith died of a diabetic coma on January 23, 1972, in Cleveland, Ohio. She had been frequently ill for the previous 18 months. Her final album, Last of Big Maybelle, was released posthumously in 1973. The album The Okeh Sessions, won the 1983 W.C. Handy Award for "Vintage or Reissue Album of the Year (U.S.)." My deepest condolences go out to my friend, Duane's wife Deed, and their entire family. I've been fortunate to interview many of the greats in this business. A select few of them have gone on to become good friends whom I speak with continually. Duane was one of those and I was very fortunate to call him a friend. Duane was a pioneer in every sense of the word, and a true stylist, carving out his own niche. No one sounded like him before he arrived, but many tried to sound like him after. But there will only ever be one Master of Twang. I will certainly miss him and all of the great talks we had. Thanks for the music Duane. It was great to call you a friend.
