On this day in 1993 Mick Ronson died from liver cancer at the age of 46. He was a guitarist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and producer. He 1st achieved critical and commercial success working with David Bowie as one of the Spiders from Mars. Ronson recorded and toured with David Bowie from 1970 to 1973. He released his 1st solo album, “Slaughter On Tenth Avenue,” in 1974 and went on to release A total of 6 solo LPs. Ronson co-produced Lou Reed’s album “Transformer,” and was also part of “Hunter Ronson Band” with Ian Hunter. He worked with Morrissey, Slaughter & The Dogs, The Wildhearts, The Rich Kids, Elton John, John Cougar, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and T-Bone Burnett, among others. “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” (often shortened to Ziggy Stardust) is the 5th studio album from David Bowie, released on June 16, 1972. This is the follow up to his masterpiece, “Hunky Dory.” This album features contributions from the Spiders from Mars, Bowie’s backing band - Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey. He is a musician, songwriter, poet, actor, and an activist. He was one of the key figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960s.Willie has acted in over 30 films, co-authored several books, and has been involved in activism for the use of biofuels and the legalization of marijuana; he’s the co-chair of the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). He was born during the Great Depression and was raised by his grandparents. He wrote his 1st song at the age of 7 and joined his 1st band at the age of 10, and hasn’t stopped since! He holds a 2nd degree black belt in tae kwon do and a 5th degree black belt in the Korean martial art of GongKwon Yusul. He has been arrested many times for marijuana and drug possession. One of those arrests came in 1977 in the Bahamas. Customs found weed in his jeans pocket, in his bags. Nelson was arrested and jailed. His Manager made arrangements to get a 6 pack of beer to his cell. Willie was released a few hours later. Upon release, drunk, he fell after jumping to celebrate and he was taken to the emergency room. He then appeared before the judge, who dropped the charges but ordered Nelson to never return to the Bahamas. Nelson’s discography includes 67 studio albums, 12 live albums, 42 compilation albums, 2 Christmas albums, the soundtracks of “The Electric Horseman” and “Honeysuckle Rose,” and 34 collaboration albums. “One for the Road” was released in 1979. Happy 69th birthday to Eddie Jobson, born on this day in 1955. Edwin “Eddie” Jobson is a keyboardist and violinist and uses synthesizers in conjunction as well. He has been a member of several bands, including Roxy Music, UK, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay, John Entwistle, Bill Bruford and Yes. He was also part of Frank Zappa’s band in 1976–77. Aside from his keyboard work Jobson has also gained acclaim for his violin playing. He won the “Lifetime Achievement” award at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards. Eddie Jobson became friends with Bryan Ferry when their sisters shared a room in college. Jobson contributed to Ferry’s solo album, “These Foolish Things,” then in 1973 Jobson replaced Brian Eno in Roxy Music. Jobson stayed with the band for 3 studio albums and numerous tours before the band went on an extended hiatus in 1976. “Country Life” is the 4th album from Roxy Music, released in November of 1974. The album is considered by many critics to be among the band’s most sophisticated and consistent. The Rolling Stone review in ‘74 said, “Stranded and Country Life together mark the zenith of contemporary British art rock.” Bryan Ferry took the album’s title from the British rural lifestyle magazine “Country Life.” The iconic cover features 2 models, Constanze Karoli (cousin of Can’s guitarist, Michael Karoli) and Eveline Grunwald (who was also Michael Karoli’s girlfriend). Bryan Ferry met them in Portugal and persuaded them to do the photo shoot. The LP cover was controversial in some countries such as the United States, Spain, and the Netherlands, where it was censored for release.
