F1 History: Ayrton Senna part 3 - First positions and wins with Lotus. The 1985 season saw Senna partnered with Elio de Angelis at Lotus. He took his first pole and win at Estoril in his second race for the team and would take another victory at Spa. Unreliability limited Senna to 4th in the standings with 38 points, with all his points finishes in 1985 being on the podium. His first season with Lotus showed promise and would be a sign of what's to come. Lotus sponsors John Player & Sons (JPS) required a British to join Senna for 1986. While Senna allegedly pushed for a fellow Brazilian Mauricio Gugelmin JPS forced Lotus hand and Johnny Dumfries was signed after Derek Warwick was vetoed by Senna. He believed that Lotus couldn't run competitive cars for two drivers at the same time, insisting on a pure number two driver. Senna finished 4th in standings with 55 points, taking two wins at Jerez and Detroit. JPS left Lotus after 1986 and Honda replaced Renault as their engine supplier, allowing Satoru Nakajima to make his F1 debut. Senna finished 3rd in the standings, taking two wins at Monaco and Detroit.
