A throwback to the conclusion of one of my longest running campaigns. The campaign ended at the heart of a demi-lich's lair where he was trying to permanently open a rift into Thanatos. He succeeded temporarily, bringing Orcus through. The battle was magnificent, 7 high level heroes squared off with a horde of demons, undead, Orcus, and, of course, the demi-lich. About half the party died in the epic struggle but they did emerge victorius. This was the last 3.5e campaign that I ran. It also illustrates the problem that most game systems have at high levels. The more options you have, the harder it is for game developers to maintain balance as characters level up. That said, it is an opportunity to build insane encounters like this! While the sculpture represents Maitreya, the work around the sculpture in addition to the Yazhi's is loosely based on the stone work that one may notice around sculptures in the outer prakara of Gangaikonda Cholapuram. Maitreya, the messianic bodhisattva characterized as the Buddha of the Future, stands in a graciously exaggerated posture, the body beautifully counterbalanced. He holds his raised hand in the gesture of exposition (vitarka mudra) and in his lowered hand displays a flask (kamandalu) universally understood in South Asian culture as the container of amrta, the elixir of life.
