Are some of your fellow flight attendants into all kinds of “self-help” programs out there that promise to free them from their problems here on earth? It is understandable but they are likely looking in the wrong place. Today many human beings try to banish their insecurities by assuming that they somehow have godlike powers originating inside themselves. It is true that, as believers, we have been given some remarkable capabilities, though ones only legitimately acquired by submitting our lives to God through surrender to, and faith in, His Son. It is only in the real security found in the salvation He offers that we are truly set free from the insecurities we earned for ourselves through our corporate and individual disobedience to our Creator. In the last five weeks, we have taken an intentional look at ways large and small, obvious and subtle, to become bolder in our individual Christian witness in the workplace. The primary takeaway from this series of “Thought for the Week” is that, whether you are quietly reading your Bible on your jump seat or walking up to a colleague whom you have never met to clearly share the Gospel, you are becoming more intentional about some new form of boldness on the job. We have affirmed that, while not every Christ-follower has a specific gift of evangelism, all of us are called to evangelize at times in specific, if varied, forms. Every one of us has benefitted profoundly and eternally from our salvation in Jesus Christ and every one of us is called by our loving Lord to be lights shining in “this present darkness.” We can be bolder on the job through the Spirit of God Who dwells within us all. We just need to be willing to be His vessels and He will do the rest. As someone once said. “We provide the will. He provides the power.” So be bold! The destiny of souls is in the balance and we have the privilege to help lead the lost human beings with whom we work to eternal life. Trust God, be bold in whatever way you feel called to be on your airline job, and expect to ultimately see results beyond what you perhaps ever thought possible! You can't predict exactly how your day will run. The unexpected should, bizarrely, be expected. And yet, that doesn't mean you can get away without some forward-thinking. Having a plan is more than having a to-do list neatly laid out. It's about deciding how you want to impact your workplace, colleagues and clients over the next eight or nine hours. It's about choosing what needs to be the priority and why, understanding the role you are there to fulfil and the standard to which God calls you to deliver it. Sometimes on the job we may be put by our management, rightly or wrongly on a “need to know” basis. God has put on this “basis” too, but only rightly. As with most, perhaps all, of the Christian journey the key to letting God have control of our lives on a day-to-day basis is faith. Someone once said that we cannot comprehend God, but we can apprehend Him. In other words, while we cannot know the full plan God has for our lives we can, based on what we know of His character, trust Him and cling to Him for our forward progress in sanctification. Whatever field in which we work we have all had days when the people with whom we do that work “drive us crazy.” (This also extends to people with whom we do not work if we hold public contact jobs and that, of course, includes hundreds of thousands of “frontline” airline employees all over the world). There are days when all of us just want to do what our job requires of us and then get away from the airport terminal, tech-ops hangar, or reservations call center…as quickly as possible! Feeling that way is part of being a fallen human living and working in a fallen world. The “catch” for those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ as both our Lord and Savior is that we do not have the perceived right anymore to just “watch out for number one.” While Jesus, Others, You (J.O.Y.) might not always be the best order of things (other than “J” always being first) we are supposed to love others with the love Christ has given us. This means being creative about doing nice, helpful things for our colleagues, even the ones that “drive us crazy.” Going the extra mile to help someone on the job is one of the ways to be bold on the job because people do notice when we help them. Sometimes they even wonder why we are doing it and ask. When and if they do that may well be an opportunity to share Christ. There are ways to let our airline colleagues know what we are and Who we follow that are purely non-verbal. One way of doing this is by simply bringing a small Bible with you and openly reading it during work or meal breaks. Even non-believing colleagues will often be able to identify a Bible by its simple, usually monochrome appearance, especially if they were raised in Christian or nominally Christian homes. Others will have no idea what it is but will notice it does not look like your average novel! That can lead to enough curiosity for them to possibly ask what you are reading. This provides the opportunity to do just that. Your answer may then lead to a conversation, or it may not, but either way your fellow gate agent or flight attendant will know you are reading something not too many people read in public these days, and they are likely to wonder why you are doing it. Reading the word of God is a silent but effective way to identify yourself as a follower of Christ. Previously we mentioned “FCAP crew tags.” These blue or green durable plastic tags contain your contact info, but also read “SAFE FLIGHT IN JESUS NAME” on one side and show the FCAP name and logo on the other. Putting one of these tags on your crew luggage is, admittedly, a very bold step for many but it is one of those “silent witnesses” we are talking about. They certainly command attention and may very well lead to conversations started by those who see and read them. Might those conversations be challenging?
