The official start of fall is right around the corner. That means we should start to get favorable conditions to dive Brennecke’s Ledge. This dive site is for experienced divers because it's a deeper dive that we generally drift. The ledge overhang is around 75-80ft deep and is loaded with Black Coral. There are multiple ways to tell the difference between species of sea turtles. One way is from the pattern the scutes form on their carapace (shell). We predominantly see Green Sea turtles diving on Kauai, but occasionally, we spot a rare Hawksbill. The first photo is a Hawksbill; the scutes on the Hawksbill overlap, and the carapace is serrated near the tail. The second photo is a Green; the scutes don’t overlap, and the carapace is rounded on the tail end. On Monday we saw a Whale Shark in the Kaulakahi channel heading back from diving at Niihau! It was a juvenile female about ten feet long. This magnificent Hawaiian Black Coral bush is at 130ft/40m at Vertical Awareness out at Lehua Creator next to Niihau. If you zoom in to the bottom left of the coral, you can see a Longnose Hawkfish. Black Coral is my favorite coral 😍 Black Coral has been harvested in Hawaii for jewelry since the 1950s. Harvesting is likely more sustainable now, but many of the larger Black Coral Bushes at diving depths have been taken off the reef. It's a rare sight to see such a massive colony like this. I love shooting Leaf Scorpionfish. They are somewhat translucent so when you add a bit of backlighting to them it completely changes there look. Because their shells have evolved to be hydrodynamic, they can not retreat their heads into their shell.
