Violet-gilled Nudibranch, Hypselodoris violabranchia. These nudi’s are on the “smaller” size of slugs, they grow to approximately 20mm or 3/4 of an inch. Hawaiian Day Octopus 🐙, first dive back in the warm waters of Hawaii (74 degrees) and I gotta say I am so grateful to live here. We saw a nice variety of creatures, but I couldn’t resist spending some time with this octopus. I love watching them go through their colors, and changing their texture! Octopus are some of the smartest creatures out there, next time you find one just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Yellow-edged moray My first ever dive in Sodwana bay and what an incredible experience it was. The reef was pristine, boasting an array of coral species with varying reef topography’s. I was honestly overwhelmed by the abundance of marine life; peacock mantis shrimp, big groupers, reef mantas, Trevally - you name it, they were there. I managed to get a clear shot of this eel despite the visibility not being the best. Common Bigeye, Heteropriacanthus cruentatus. One thing I love about this fish is the crazy patterns that it shows. This fish can rapidly change colors from red to a blotchy red and silver. The maximum length of the fish is roughly 18 inches, and they are found all over the Indo-Pacific. This species can be found in caves and crevices, especially during the day. During the night they can sometimes be found swimming among the reef.

Globe Crab, Randallia ornata. As you can probably guess this crab resembles a globe, due to its “round” shape. Did you know that crabs must shed their exoskeleton in order to grow? After the crab wiggles out of its old exoskeleton it is vulnerable for the next week or so until its soft shell hardens into its normal protective armor.

Anyone for a game of pufferfish volleyball? For many years I had enjoyed the Los Islotes sea lion rookery and the playfulness of the pups, but in all that time I had never witnessed this behaviour. Right next to our panga, the California sea lions were joyfully prodding and tormenting an inflated pufferfish. I was spellbound but time was scarce as we had entered the water to try and disentangle another, less fortunate sea lion pup. My job was to document the work of @rescate_lobos_marinos but I was torn between this spellbinding natural scene and the mission at hand...I heard my name called from the water...one last picture and I moved on...

Gold Lace Nudibranch, Halgerda terramtuentis. One of hawaiis more common Nudibranch, you can easily spot many of these slugs on a single dive in Hawaii. It can be found anywhere from 5 - 140 ft, it typically feeds on a light orange sponge and its eggs are a bright yellow color! I have no idea where this nudi got its patterns and colors, but it sure is interesting.

In a career which offers the rare privilege of reporting from many of the ocean’s most rich and spectacular regions, the Galapagos has marked me as one of the most extraordinary, and I can barely restrain my enthusiasm for the marine life which it preserves. With over 90% of the biodiversity intact, and stringent protection in place, Ecuador and the Galapageans must be congratulated for their achievement in preserving this natural Eden. But at the same time, the uniqueness of the islands as one of the last true refuges for wildlife forces us not to relent in the effort to conserve it from the worst influences of man. Extract from my cover story on the Galapagos islands, out now in issue 36 of @oceanographic_mag.
