T049A3 (Nat) following behind T036A (Leland) this past Friday as they travelled from Haro Strait towards Spieden Island. I last saw T049A3 in the fall of 2022 up in Johnstone Strait, while T036A and family were just recently up in Blackfish Sound (on March 16th) when I was up there for two nights - we found them as we were heading into the Broughton Archipelago. What a fun combo! T49A3 “Nat” and T19C “Spouter” cruising hard to catch up with the rest of their families. “Nat” is getting so big now 🥺 These two crack me up. While the rest of the T49As and T18s passed Crane Island on the Wasp Passage side, these two split off and decided to go back and forth through Pole Pass. They went through with the current from east to west, then turned around and went back the way they came against the current, and then about 15 minutes later, went back through again and finally started chasing after the rest of the group. The video is of their third time through Pole Pass within 30 minutes, filmed by my neighbor @_ben_carstensen_ The whale shenanigans! Of course, I missed all three passes from shore but we still got out and had an amazing encounter with them on the water. What do you do once you’ve hunted them all? It’s hard to believe there existed just a little over 100 Humpback Whales at one point in our recent history. One of Australia’s first big industries following European colonisation was whaling and whale product exportation, and between 1949 and 1962, an estimated 8300 Humpback Whales had been killed off the east coast of Australia. Valued more in their death for oil and baleen, humpback whales were on the brink of extinction by 1963. Thankfully, an ongoing conservation effort now exists to protect these creatures, and from it sprung a new industry - whale watching. Yesterday, piperhuckstepp and I had the pleasure of seeing the East Australian Humpback Whales on their annual journey north. Between April and November, Humpback Whales migrate from the Antarctic after stocking up on food over the summer. The pods are led by the young males, and followed by the larger, pregnant females as they make their 10,000km journey into warmer northern waters to mate and give birth, before travelling back down south. Seeing them in the wild was an awe-inspiring insight into who we share our world with. Despite successful conservation efforts, we still know little about Humpback Whales and their yearly journey, like where exactly they breed, or if the east and west coast populations interact in antarctic waters. During my trip to Tubbataha, I had spotted a fin out in the open ocean during the crossing back. I thought it might be a pilot whale but the fin looked distinctly different and the shape seemed like something I’d seen before. Thanks to feedback from my story post and location of the sighting, it most likely was a Bryde’s whale (pronounced “broo-dus”). I will never know for sure but Bryde’s whale have a distinctive sickle-shaped fin and have been recorded in the Sulu Sea area.
