Let your family be you. There is zero reason to be fake. It is so heavy trying to pretend to be someone we aren't... isn't it? How many games of Hide and Seek have you played with your kids? I was just at an 11 year old's birthday party today and the kids were STILL playing hide and seek. But would you think it makes for cute photos? Maybe not, but I challenge that it does! Why? -It documents a game your family already plays together -It gives the kids and family a way to forget they are doing family photos and actually connect -It brings genuine smiles to the kiddos -It stretches you as a photographer. Tip: Tell the parents to looks extra surprised when their kids finds them! Set boundaries with the kids that you will only do 3 rounds, otherwise you might play hide and see the entire rest of the session. And yes, this game really works for all ages and is great if there is a big age gap between siblings. I did hide and seek with a family with a 18, 15 and 5 year old two weeks ago. Encourage play! This is truly one of my favorite prompts. Yes, even with older kids. Why? Let me explain. Walking shots are so fun and can get everyone relaxed and moving, which helps engage most kids. But high-energy kids might say, "BORING!" if you ask them to walk and hold hands with their family. So, I tell them we can walk all boring like or we can make it a game. Most kids, even 12+ year olds, are happy to make it a game. Note - not all kids want to hold hands. That is okay! Linking arms is an option or just waling alongside the family is okay too. My prompt goes like this: Me to Child #1: What is your favorite color? Child #1: Pink! Me: Okay, on Pink we are all going to walk backwards, BEEP, BEEP! (Like a truck backing up) Me to Child #2: What is your favorite color? Child #2: Blue! Me: Okay, when I say Blue, we are all going to dance! Go boogey! Then we do that. It is so fun and makes for some fun memories! Purpose for me: It shows a connected family that is engaging with each other. Parents are letting down their guard to have a good time with their kids. This lets the kids feel cherished and help them to remember their parents love them. Remember, to print your photos! Print a special 4 x 6 for each of your kids - a connected family one, not a posed one. Let People Love You. This phrase has really been on my mind lately. I have been quiet on social media for a bit, and what is odd for me is that I didn't feel in a super family related crisis at home. Instead, I have just been coming down from some extreme hypervigilance while restabilizing our youngest emotionally. Anxiety in children is real folks, let me tell you. Trauma presents in children in ways that we can't always predict. With things stabilizing with the family, the pain I feel on a daily basis has taken over more. Sounds odd to some perhaps, but my camera actually is wrecking my hand. Go figure, right? I love this career, but it is putting too much stress on my hand... so I decided to get the next surgery on my hand. I will take a couple weeks off and then do some sessions left handed (yes, I have figured out how!). Surgery is on May 8th. I am sooo grateful for all of your support! I will be turning to talking more about my Neurodivergent classes for photographers during my downtime. My hope is this surgery is a quick recovery and that I am back to being able to hold my camera without pain soon! So while it is normally my mission to show others how loved they are, I will step back and rest, love myself and my body for a few weeks and by slowing down, begin to accept that others do love me too. #feasiblephotography

Amaze the world. But when I stopped being the best... What happened? I found my own freedom. So I challenge you... Do you want perfect photos or perfect LOVE in your photos? I cannot promise perfect family photos. But I can promise perfect connection. It isn't always happy connection. Some days kids are jealous or they just feel sad. But those sweet snuggle-mama-for-comfort moments are precious and fleeting. My daughter left for the bus today without saying goodbye. That was a bittersweet thing. In-home "posed" Newborn Photography IS possible. In fact, I love this!!! Why? Because we can capture connected family photos with older siblings in the place that they feel the most comfortable. Older siblings have a LOT to work through when you bring home a new baby. My mom tells me I screamed for 3 hours when they brought my brother home.... :-( So why stress these kiddos out more for the sake of photos? Instead, let's capture special moments of them in their space, having fun with you WHILE we capture newborn photos. I still have two newborn spots open for the month of March! How is your Pre-Session Communication? Things don't always go smoothly at a photo session (scroll to the last photo...). Sometimes kids have just had a hard day. Sometimes it is too cold. Sometimes they are hungry. As photographers, the host of the photo session, we are responsible for creating a safe and welcoming space for the family we are photographing. We area a host. Guide and lead your families, help meet their needs. In order to do that though, you have to have a GREAT pre-session workflow. One that works for all types of families, neurodiverse or not. Questions that help you and the family prepare, tips on what to expect, a packing list for the family... all of that will make for a much better session. Hosting a photography session is a big responsibility. Accommodations. What does that mean to you? I honestly think of hotel accommodations first. But in my day to day life, I have to acknowledge the accommodations I make for my kids. While I love to go, go, go on vacations and explore as much as possible, that is not what my neurodivergent daughter needs. She needs a schedule and time to transition. Time to breathe and reset. We accommodate her by building these things into our lives. I do what I can to accommodate children and families at my photo sessions too. Do they need a quieter location? Would the photo session be better at your home so that your kiddo feels comfortable? As parents, we can build up our dreams for what we want. Perhaps you dream of beautiful photos in a flower field. In beautiful matching dresses and the sun setting behind you. Oh - that would be stunning! Reality though is this... not every child performs well and is happy near the end of the day. Those dresses may be itchy. And that field of flowers? BORING! (to the child...). So think about what will be the best situation for your kiddo. It is hard setting our dreams aside. I ran into that this weekend on our weekend getaway... but ultimately, we must balance the needs of our family and accommodate our special kids. It does not mean we are giving in. We are honoring them. Please remind yourself of that. Invisible Disability. What does that make you think of? I have one. One that I hide the best I can. Do you? Many people do. You may think of chronic pain. You may not think of anything and just be confused. My vision is my hidden disability. Yup, I wear glasses, but that only helps so much. I have nystagmus. This means that my eyes move involuntarily, causing them to never sit on the 20/20 focal point of my vision for more than a fraction of a second. On my best day, my vision is 20/40… which does allow me to drive. Something that my parents were told when I was 3 months old that I would never do. I have hidden this from you because I am a photographer… You know, a profession that relies on sharp focus. I use auto focus and trust my equipment. After nearly 7 years of doing this, I feel it is safe to share that I am a visually-challenged photographer. So why do I share this? Because I know what it means to fight to operate in a world not created for my body. I have learned how to see in this world where I cannot actually see. Just like my daughter who has ADHD. Her body is not made for sitting still at desks. Her creative mind wants to run and be free. I understand her. It hurt when the counselor called ADHD a disability… but I get it. She needs accommodations to help her, just like I need glasses to help my own body. Invisible disabilities are hard. People assume you can function and you know you can’t. I have asked for help before with reading something and literally been told, “You have glasses, you read it!” That does not encourage you to ask for help in the future. Compassion for invisible disabilities is something I have in abundance. I walk through a fuzzy world each day and very few people know. I bring this compassion into my photography work. It is the reason I am fighting for my daughter and all the neurodiverse families out there. Reflection is so important for all of us. As parents, we typically know this but there is no way we can find time to do a good amount of reflection. I was so fortunate to have some time to just sit and be with myself last week. I learned a lot about who I miss being, what joy I have in who I am now and thinking about how to integrate those two people into a better stronger version for the future. I used to speak at conferences all over the states about community service. It was such a passion of mine. Sadly, the politics of that organization took me down, and it takes time to recover from things like that. But still, I gained sooo much experience and so many amazing friends. I have been finding myself wishing to do more for others again, and I realized that is a huge part of what my journey for advocating to photographers about the world of neurodiverse people is. I want all families to feel comfortable with the profession that is photographing them. I want to teach people the inner workings of the emotions that families with neurodiverse kiddos (or parents) likely have going on. Try different angles. That is my challenge to everyone out there who uses either a phone or a camera to take photos. Most people take photos from their chest area, which totally works! Holding your arms close to your body will help stabilize your arms and have less blur. But have you taken photos from the ground? What about from up high? If you have done a photo session with me, you know I get messy and roll on the wet ground. If we have done an in-home session together, you likely have seen me climb on your furniture. (My physical therapist loves this by the way - keeps her employed, lol). Thank you to all the moms out there who are not afraid to roll on the ground with your kids. Life is hard to navigate. Sometimes you feel you have things all under control and then something happens and you feel blown all over the place and not sure if you can stand up straight. I feel so blessed that I have so many people around me to help me stand up when I am struggling. It has taken years, but I am learning to accept help when people offer. We try so hard to do everything on our own. But we were not created to be alone. We were created to connect with others. So text someone you haven't talked to in a long time. Invite people over for dinner. Spend time with people and learn what they have to share with you. Connect. This is one of my core values. I hope you feel I connect with you when I see you. It is what I want to do. If I am sloppy and don't, you have permission to call me out on it. I am very, very far from perfect. In home sessions mean you can capture your family connecting with one another doing the things you love. They are sooo much more comfortable for little ones and pets can be off leash and just be themselves. I totally have been falling in love with in home sessions lately. I absolutely loved spending time with this family. It was our first session together and I could tell immediately it was going to be great! I love going to your home and capturing photos. Babies under a year old tend to be happiest when they are snuggled up in their parents arms and we don't have to worry about the weather. This sweet family had a couple of beautiful pups we were able to include in the photos too. Older siblings can easily come and go as they want to from newborn sessions that are in home too. In home sessions are amazing. Hard stop. They are where you and your family make your memories. Your home is where everyone can relax. At this time of year... it is also where you can stay warm! I had soooo much fun with this sweet family during their session. We got to look out windows, spot cars, hug the floor, talk on the phone, climb stairs... all the things your sweet little one does on a daily basis that you wish you could cherish. Does your house have to be clean? Nope. We can tuck everything behind the lens and I am good at cropping things out. Your family isn't boring. Why should your family photos show you all standing still and just staring at the camera? Okay - well, that is my opinion. I really encourage families to come and play. Yes, we want to capture a couple photos where everyone is looking because you do want to admire the details of your sweet family, but you don't want them all to be that way, do you? My family doesn't stop moving. Even if I am exhausted and want to collapse, my kids will prod me to get up and do something else. So I bring that energy into my sessions. I LOVE how this mama brought cocoa and treats and then a favorite remote control car to the session. That was such a fantastic way to engage her little guy! I learn something at every session. Read on if you want to know what I learned at this session.... BUT before I share, can we just take a minute to absorb how incredible this strong and beautiful this mama is? I was so fortunate to work with her eldest on senior photos a few years ago and this time we got together to celebrate her and her 4 kiddos. Aren't they incredible? Sometimes I get knocked off track. Okay, often. My brain is all over the place. I am tired, I am energized, I am excited, but I am weary to the bone. Sounds familiar right? Well, I have to thank this Mama. At this amazing session where we got to capture her family and extended family having an amazing time on the UW campus, she shared with me how great it was that I was so open about working with Neurodivergent families. It helped her feel like she could be more open with me. It was a huge reminder to me to not give up on my mission. My mission is to make family photography a welcoming place for neurodivergent families. Where they can capture memories of ND kids being who they naturally are. Making it a place where they feel comfortable being in front of their professional photographer. They will feel understood and not judged. Thank you Mama J for reminding me of this. She even gifted me a sweet gift at the end of our session together that had me crying. (It is the last photo.) As a photographer, we hope that we impact lives as a family historian, but really I want to be more than that. I want to champion the ND families out there and let them know we are all here together. You are not alone. We do have unique challenges to face as parents. There is no easy button for us. You have a friend though. Baby It's Cold Outside!!! That doesn't mean we can't still have fun... but if you want your little one to have fun, please think less about how cute they will lookin their new sweater and think about how comfortable they will be in their new cute hat and jacket. :-) As adults we can power through cold weather, but it is hard to convince a kiddo that they are fine when their body is telling them otherwise. Senior photos can be so empowering when you have the right photographer. As a photographer, we can create magic with our use of light and ease of conversations. Knowing the poses and guiding people into them is tricky but so important. Letting the true personality shine through isn't easy, but I love the challenge. I was asked by an amazing friend yesterday if I worked with families with teens... my website doesn't really show that. Well, YES! Yes I do! (And believe me, my website has now been updated!) I capture senior photos too! In fact, if you book a senior session with me, I ask if you want a portion of the time to be devoted to family photos for NO EXTRA CHARGE. This may be the last time you can talk your teen into family photos before they go off on their own adventure, we should totally take advantage of it and get you some family photos! Teens sessions look a little different. Most teens actually come alive at the end of the session, so that is my favorite part! Their creativity is sparked and they have a blast! Embrace it and have fun! Family sessions with teens can result in laughter, giggles and horseplay, just like my little kid family sessions. Mother of at least 1 (maybe 2) neurodivergent kids here. I have heard people say they just want to be "seen". Well, honestly, I don't want that for my family. With my daughters' ADHD, she makes sure as hell that she is seen. Believe me, spend 2 minutes with her and you will know what I mean! :-) What I want is to not feel that squirmy feeling inside while my daughter is talking a stranger's ear off and I can tell they are thinking, "Oh my goodness, all I did was say hi! I don't have time for this!" I want my family to not be judged. When I work with a professional, I want to feel like they are on my team. Honoring my daughter and letting her be heard, but gently guiding her to what she needs to do. As photographers, we can look like a deer in headlights and panic when faced with high energy kids. They don't do what WE want them to do. They don't stop talking. So we shut down and panic and then that neurodivergent child picks up on it ...and they shut down too. They did wrong. Again. Stop stressing. I have a class that can help. I will work on giving tips over the next week too. Bookmark them so you can come back to them later. First tip: Stop and enjoy what the kiddo is saying. They want to know you are listening. You have plenty of time at the session, you can give them 5 minutes of your attention so that they feel respected. They will open up to you and the whole session will be amazing! Sometimes I get an a utterly sweet little angel to work with during a newborn session. This little girl certainly was a joy to work with! In home newborn sessions are so much a labor of love for me. I want it to be a great experience and for the family to really get the photos that they are looking for. I can't provide the exact same experience of prop selection that you might get from a studio experience (I can only fit so much in my car) but what you might loose in that, you gain tenfold by not having to drag your family out of the house for a newborn session. ND = Neurodivergent. Neurodivergent= Someone whose brain is a bit differently wired. They may have ADHD, Autism, dyslexia, sensory challenges. What that also means is how they interact with the world is beautifully different. Does this impact family photos? You bet! My family is ND. We often worry about going out into the "normal" world and being judged. My daughters won't wear typical clothes. The world feels different to them than it might you. Will they share that with you, their photographer? Likely not. You have to make it a safe place for them to do that. How? Talk about it on your website; in your social posts. Talk about sensory safe location options and flexible booking windows. Tell them you love movement and that high energy kids are welcomed. Why do a photo session in your home? 1. Keep your little one warm!! 2. You are more natural with what you do WITH your kid in the walls of your own home (unless you are a huge nature person... then you might feel differently) 3. You get to document what your home looks like! Sounds odd, but I wish I had indoor photos of our last home before we moved. 4. It is a great way to get the pets involved without having to worry about a leash! (Make sure to scroll to the last photo - I love that photo!!) I get bored easily. Really, I do. Best way to spice things up? Ask the high school senior your are photographing what is important to them. Then, find a way to embrace it. This student's family shared that architecture and books are important. Well, in Seattle, we are so fortunate to have an AMAZING library. So that is where we went. If you put a student in an environment that they love, you don't have to work so hard as a photographer to capture their heart and soul - they just comes to life. I want to challenge photographers to embrace the locations that their families and students feel comfortable in for their photos. Wedding photographers don't get to dictate where they photograph or at what time. Family photographers, let's strive to be just as bold! This amazing senior was fantastic to work with! He is a budding game design artist and we had such a great time finding unique angles and spots for his senior photos. I LOVED working with him! Do you actually WANT to leave your house after having a newborn? Nope. You are sleep deprived, fuzzy brained and now are responsible for a whole new life. BUT.... you want sweet photos so that you can remember your baby as a cute little bug. That is exactly why I keep my newborn photos set up as in home photos. Sure, I could have a studio and make you all come to me. Or I can recognize where you as a new family are at and come to you. I can make them look like we were in a studio, but I also love highlighting your home. The place this sweet child is going to be spending all their time. Let's document it! "Dance Like No One is Watching!" Yeah... I love that. I totally dance in the kitchen when there is no one else in the house. There is a very good chance I am going to ask you to dance during our photo session. Why? Movement looks amazing in photos! Shaking your body actually releases stress! Did you know that? Next time you are alone, relax your arms and just shake them out. Do that a couple times - you will feel sooo much better! Dancing also feels good. I admire families that are okay just letting loose! Why do you want photos of it? 1. My camera's shutter speed can freeze the flying hair which can look artistic ;-) 2. Because when you look back, you can feel the joy. You see how relaxed your kids were. "I am doing my best!" This is something we say often. To ourselves. To our loved ones. We also hear it from our spouses/partners. From our kids. Would you ever respond to your children, "Well, do better!" ? I hope not, but maybe in anger we might. However, we do respond to ourselves that way. Self-compassion is so important as parents. It is so hard. We are in charge of making the world go around for our kids. Getting them food, getting their laundry washing, working to earn a living to put that food in their mouths. And we are run ragged. Stop. Give yourself a hug and say, "I am doing my best" to yourself. Then respond with, "I know, that that is enough." You are important. You are loved. You are valuable. Lavender Fields!!! This was the first time I got to capture photos of a family at the Arlington Lavender Fields and we had a good time for sure! Yup, there are bees but we were not there at the height of the season, so there were less than earlier on. (Go figure that bees would like flowers? - these are things I must remember, lol). This family is super special to me. I have been working with them since Mama S was pregnant with Little T. They are friends, not just people I photograph and I am so blessed to have them in my life!
