Have you ever seen a picture of yourself and thought I look tired or old or simply not good? Of course, we all have. But then there are those times where we look so much better. Why is this? One of the reasons could be the lighting. It makes a huge difference and photographers know this. When a photographer says to start the session about an hour before sunset it’s to ensure the pretty, soft and flattering light. In the end you’ll be thankful for that golden hour session where everyone will look their best. And a little golden hour sun flare is simply yummy.

He’s outdoors and his body feels regulated in motion. The dwarf goat looks on. Baby brother’s gaze is on his favourite person after mom. And she is connecting with dad. My nostalgic heart tells me that this is the story of how the future could play out. Does a newborn session have to happen within the first couple weeks? Nope. You can do your newborn session whenever you feel ready. In fact, an older baby is more alert, has more expressions and lets face it, mom feels good too. There’s no hard fast rule for a newborn session and honestly there’s never a bad time to capture your family in photos. Do it when you are ready and make it your own.
So this was a first for me. I’ve never done a shoot with a car before, never mind a vintage 1974 Bronco. I was wondering how it would go. What I would have them do. Hoping some inspiration might hit me. And questioning how to capture the family but still showcase the car. It was out of my comfort zone for sure, but it was really fun doing something different. And this cute family that I have photographed many times before made it extra cool, because they are great!❤️🚙
I would have to say that the majority of my family sessions are with younger children. Maybe it’s because life gets busier as our kids get older. Or maybe it’s because taking the time for photos becomes less of a priority when they aren’t changing right before our eyes. However, I still think it’s important to take the time for family photos. Maybe it’s to capture your kids while they are teenagers. Maybe it’s to freeze the moment before someone heads off to college. Or maybe it’s simply because it’s just been way too long time since you’ve done family photos together. Whatever the reason is, make this your year. Get in front of the camera with your big kids. I promise I’ll make it fun for everyone, even if they are dragging their feet or get there. 😉
It’s almost April and I just looked back and realized I’ve only made 9 posts in 2024! I don’t know what that’s about, I used to be so good at daily posting. I’m going to try to get back in track. One week if posting daily…putting it out there for accountability 🙈
One of the best parts of my job is the relationships I have with my clients. I have many families that I photograph again and again over the years. . Each time we get together it’s like catching up with friends. The first time I met this couple they were pregnant with their first child. We’ve done four more sessions since then and I love our history. If you value photography, capturing your family through the years, my advice is this. Find a photographer you gel with. And once you do stick with them and keep making family sessions a priority. I promise you, you’ll never regret capturing these moments with your kids.

I have been wanting to do photos with my son and his girlfriend for some time now. They live in the cutest community and I knew it would make the best backdrop for our shoot. We had the best time walking the streets, finding new spots and taking pictures as we went. I just love a carefree shoot like this, just easy breezy and fun. And when you add in the fact that it’s my people, it makes it even better still.
I always like to try and get a shot with everyone’s hands. Even if it takes a bit of finagling to get ‘er done!

When it comes to newborn photos I am often asked this question- Should we have someone come help with our older child? I get it, in those early newborn days it’s hard enough getting everybody ready for the session, never mind worrying how they will behave. But here are my thoughts- First off we’ll be in your home, the place where anything you need is right there. It’s will be easy to grab a snack, go play with toys or simply take a break. I always do fun things that engage the older ones. Basically I make it all about them and not the baby. I offer a lot of encouragement and encourage play and we keep things easy. We go for the images that I know you’ll want and anything else we get is just a bonus. And there will be many opportunities for the bonus shots. And above all, don’t expect perfection from your little ones. Just let it unfold, embrace what comes and let me run the session. In the end we’ll capture some really sweet moments of this special time and I’m pretty sure you’ll be so thankful that we did.
Anyone else having more coffee and yawning more than normal today? Oh man.. daylight savings time, right? I love capturing families in the comfort of their home for newborn photos. We get to include the pets. We get to include that favorite cup of coffee on the porch. We get to capture you. Living your life. In-home "posed" Newborn Photography IS possible. In fact, I love this!!! Why? Because we can capture connected family photos with older siblings in the place that they feel the most comfortable. Older siblings have a LOT to work through when you bring home a new baby. My mom tells me I screamed for 3 hours when they brought my brother home.... :-( So why stress these kiddos out more for the sake of photos? Instead, let's capture special moments of them in their space, having fun with you WHILE we capture newborn photos. I still have two newborn spots open for the month of March! What is the best way to insure that we have a successful family session? My job is to make sure that the kids have fun. How do I do this? I give them playful things to do. I make things into a game. I let them be my helper. I let them choose what we do next. And I encourage them all the way. It might seem simple enough, but it set the whole tone for the session. If the kids are happy-the parents are happy and the result is authentic emotion filled photos.
☀️Are you dreaming about warm weather and being able to sit in the dry grass?☀️ Me too! Spring is a GREAT time for family photos, especially if you have littles that have an early bedtime. As we head into summer the days are longer and our start time will be later. Why? Because we want that soft flattering light that comes when the sun is lower in the sky. The base color is Navy Blue/Grey Blue and the harmonizing colors (brown, burgundy) of Red Rock Canyon (Las Vegas, NV) is an example of the Triadic color theory. Tips for Getting Kids to Cooperate for Family Photos Family photos are a cherished tradition, a way to capture moments and memories that will be treasured for years to come. But getting kids to cooperate can be challenging. Here are some quick tips: 1. We will work together to choose the perfect location that will be comfortable for them. 2. Kids love games, so I will incorporate games, silly poses, and playful interactions to keep them entertained and engaged. 3. Stay calm and joyful. Kids feel their parents’ emotions, so if you are calm and enjoying the photo session, your kids will enjoy too. 4. Although I will capture some posed photos, candid moments are my favorites. Let them play, run around, and be kids. 5. Celebrate their participation afterward! With these strategies, you can turn photo sessions into enjoyable experiences that capture genuine smiles and cherished memories. We went to the Dahlia Festival hosted by @triplewrenfarms near Bellingham in Washington back in September and it did not disappoint! Such a stunning place, a gardener's heaven. My daughters (11 and 13 yrs old) reluctantly modelled. Don't let these photos fool you--they were stiff and awkward, complained the whole time and wanted to play with the kittens instead of taking pictures for their mama. I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I don’t like having my picture taken. Yah sure, many people can probably say that, but really, I don’t. I basically turn into awkward girl when the camera is turned my way. Don’t get me wrong, I know the value in it. And I will get in the shot with family and friends when it’s necessary, but I’m usually the one to say “let me take the picture”. The other day I met up with a friend so that we could take photos of each other for social media. Let me set the stage-my friend is one of those people that looks great in any photo. She seems completely comfortable in front of the camera and some might say, is a natural. As I took photos of her I was thinking “you’re adorable, yes, do that again, so good, I love it, nailed it”. Easy. But then it was my turn and I immediately felt like, what the heck, I’m so uncomfortable, I am completely awkward, what should I do. The crazy part is, I should know what to do. I mean come on, I photograph people all the time, this should be easy, but it’s not. If you can relate to this and you’re letting it hold you back from doing a family session, just know that I feel you. But here’s the thing-I am going to guide, prompt and encourage you the whole way through. You don’t need to know what to do, because I do. In the end, my little insecurity might just be my best photographer super power, and I’m one hundred percent okay with that.
So in love with this sweet session, documenting a little slice of their life while vacationing at @thepacificbin cabin. There were snuggles, book time, a little walk, milk, and even time in the hot tub. It felt mundane - which was the beautiful part of it. Nobody had to be somebody they weren’t. So often we feel the need for perfection, myself included, and it can so easily become something it really isn’t. This year more then ever I want to lean into capturing the truth, reality, and common moments. The ones that feel so normal to us but we will miss the most once they’re gone. Capturing memories that are at their simplest form exactly what it sounds like. Reflection is so important for all of us. As parents, we typically know this but there is no way we can find time to do a good amount of reflection. I was so fortunate to have some time to just sit and be with myself last week. I learned a lot about who I miss being, what joy I have in who I am now and thinking about how to integrate those two people into a better stronger version for the future. I used to speak at conferences all over the states about community service. It was such a passion of mine. Sadly, the politics of that organization took me down, and it takes time to recover from things like that. But still, I gained sooo much experience and so many amazing friends. I have been finding myself wishing to do more for others again, and I realized that is a huge part of what my journey for advocating to photographers about the world of neurodiverse people is. I want all families to feel comfortable with the profession that is photographing them. I want to teach people the inner workings of the emotions that families with neurodiverse kiddos (or parents) likely have going on. I want people to have compassion and empathy for the differently wired brains that are so incredibly beautiful in the world. So I will continue to do what I can to advocate for families like mine. Like my friends'. Like so many, many people out there.
