Meal plan for the next 3-4 days done. 3 x days worth of overnight oats in the fridge awaiting consumption and there's probably enough veggie stew for 4-5 meals. I've got feta in the fridge to chuck on top for some added protein. While hunting up the frozen veggies to add to the stew for a bit of variety I found 3 or 4 fish in a bag in the freezer. So that's meals for a bit of variety in between veg stew. There's a pot of "What needs using up" stew bubbling away on the stove. Onions, a shed load of garlic and ginger, a slightly squishy aubgerine, one of the 6(!) small butternut squashes that have been hanging around my kitchen, a carton and a tin of chopped tomatoes, a wee bit of veggie stock, plus cumin and chilli. Once it's cooked down a bit some leftover frozen veggies will going in there plus other herbs/spices if needed and that's dinner for the next 2-3 days covered. All in all that's 2 veggies used rather than heading to the compost and 6 items out of the pantry in terms of decluttering the kitchen and eating down my stores. Win! I'll make some overnight oats shortly so that will be breakfast through to Sunday or Monday - they'll be served with blueberries or stewed rhubarb or stewed apples. Tomorrow I've got some cooking apples to use (apple crumble) and a bean salad to make for lunches for 2-3 days. April/May should be a lowish spend month (though I run my budget 1st to 31st of the month my pay days are mid month). I'm away for a long delayed event this weekend which has all been paid for (tickets and accommodation) so there's just food and petrol to Birimgham and back to cover. Meal plan Monday through Friday lunchtime. I'm away Friday from lunch until Monday lunch for an event which has been delayed for several years. Not the best timing in the world as last week and this week are busy weeks (50+ hours last week as the colleague who was supposed to help was off sick). Likely to be the same this week with some overspill into next week - but I can take my work laptop away and catch up a bit over the weekend so I'll hopefully have caught up by the time I get back! A quick batch cook means I have chilli for a couple of evening meals this week and the other two days can be a quick pasta dinner. Just some overnight oats to prep and I'll be done. I'm working from home tomorrow and Wednesday which I means I can have a good run at the massive amounts of admin generated last week and arising this coming week and drop ny washing off for a service wash on Wednesday! I'll pop into the office on Tuesday (between site visits) and Thursday to clear any urgent admin before the weekend. That will leave Friday morning for a tip run and packing and I'll be on the road by midday. Options to return are to leave the event early Monday morning (be on the road by 6am ish) or depart at 9am as I don't fancy hitting early rush hour around Birmingham. I make occasional use of my Curry's (Creation) delayed payment scheme - you buy an item and get between 6-12 mts to pay in full interest free. I've used it for quick purchases when I've wanted/needed an item but not got it in the budget, especially when my emergency or sinking funds have been low. I've never exceeded the payment times or had interest added in over 15 years of use. I used it a couple of times late last year - once to buy a portable hard drive and once to buy a new fitbit. I'd paid the hard drive the following month but left the Fitbit. There's a little extra in the budget this month so the Fitbit is now fully paid for. The next purchase is likely to be a new washing machine once I've finished reorganising and redecorating the kitchen. 😁 I'm planning on taking time off w/c 29 April - which will give me 10 days to get a good run at sorting out my flat, garden and allotment. This weekend has been lovely and I should have been in the garden or on the allotment but I finally hit breaking point with the chaos in my flat.😋 I've finally got the energy to get started with a major Spring Clean - which I suspect will take most of the month! I had a bit of a spend at Ikea last Tuesday and bought various sized glass tuppaware as I want to move from plastic to glass. So I've mostly re-organised the kitchen to accommodate this. Old tuppaware will either go down to the allotment for useful storage or be donated to my local charity shop. I just have to clean the fridge and fruit and veg bowls and do some meal planning and the kitchen ia done until the end of the month when I'll do another review of the cupboards. I also tackled the giant pile of papers and receipts I've been ignoring for solid 6 or 7 months. It's now reduced by half and I'm onto the logging, scanning and shredding phase. If I can fiish the kitchen and the receipts/scanning tonight I will feel like I've made progress. My plan then is to set aside an hour or two a night during the week to get everything cleared by the end of the month. In yet more life admin - EDF have a good 1 year fix at the moment. So much so that Martin Lewis recommends it as a worthwhile one to go for as it should end up being 18% cheaper than staying on the standard fixed tarrif. I'm already and EDF customer and they've just sent my energy satement through to 31 March. Apparently the fix will save me £31.78 on my electricity and £80.03 on my gas - £118.81 savings are not to be ignored. Sorted out my tarrif change which takes effect from tomorrow. My electricity account currently has a tiny credit and my gas is about £50 in debt - which I expect to clear as we move through spring and summer when my gas use goes down a lot. I'll be keeping an eye on how much credit each account accumulates. Insta is being so tricksy at the moment. May have to delete if this doesn't work..eh silly Insta has not posted image properly but can't be arsed to faff around with it! My contract for broadband/landline with BT runs out tomorrow and once again they sent me a renewal significantly above the 8% or so published price rise. After a bit of back and forth today I got them down to just over £53. Not as good a deal as I got for the cottage but a modest £7/m increase which I can live with. I don't use the landline really but it's handy to have as a back up. I'm loathe to step away from BT as my service is very fast, stable and reliable. And chat on the local community groups shows alternatives to be unreliable (Virgin, TalkTalk) or untested (Community Fibre). March was busy but at least I had 6 days in Wales which was a much needed break. I've got a day or so away the third weekend in April and am planning a couple of home based long weekends in May but its likely my next proper break won't be until September. I spent last week at the cottage in Wales enjoying Anglsey Open Studios with a friend. Studios were visited, art was bought (LOTS of art was bought - paintings, prints, pottery, wood turning and carving), we also had a couple of decent meals out and some downtime to sit on the couch, crochet and watch multiple seasons of George Clarke's Old House New Home which means I'm now refreshed and inspired to sort out my flat, declutter and redecorate and get on with the garden and allotment. It was a delightful break and the right combination of busy and chilled out. 😁 I got back late Thursday night and am not in work until Wednesday. Huzzah! Time to get a bit more organised before then. The budget will be rejigged for April as I spent a bit more than I intended and I've had a wee bit of a spendy few days since returning - mostly on items from Ikea and houseplants! I feel zero guilt about my spendy weeks as everything I have bought brings me joy and will be used. HOLIDAY! Technically I'm on leave until 3rd April. I have to drop my laundry at the launderette so I have clean clothes for the hols; got to quickly finish cleaning my bathroom, hall/stairs and kitchen; do a tip run; fill up with petrol and check my tyre pressure; pick up a parcel from the post office and pack. This evening I drive to Suffolk and tomorrow morning I drive cross country with a friend to North Wales where we will be until next Thursday. Then drive home via Suffolk and I have a few days over Easter to reset the flat, garden and work on the allotment before returning to work on 3 April. Needless to say I'm taking my laptop beacuse its year end and there's a lot to sort out before endnif March. But I figure I can keep a lid on things if I check email morning and evening. Sinking fund update - so far so good! I started the year with a bit more of a carryover from 2023 than expected, which was nice, and there have been a few wins. My car sailed through it's MOT in January but still needs a service - which I will arrange with a Cazoo centre as I paid upfront for 3 years of servicing. So 🤞🏻 there will hopefully be no expense there. This year we ended up with enough in the cottage slush fund (the ex and I pay equal amounts into a separate account to run the cottage and pay expenses) to cover the insurance. After some maintenance spending last year that has been a pleasant surprise! My RHS annual membership came in a bit lower than expected as did the Council tax. Because this left me with a bit extra the sinking fund has paid for my share of accommodation for a weekend event I'm going to mid-April and cleared a bit of frivilous spending on my Barclaycard. 2024-25 Council Tax bill came through last week (hilarously the council website had issues with people being able to log on and download them). I'd budgeted for it to be £1200 so I'm pleased to see I got that in the right ball park. I tend to pay it annually because it's a bill I really resent seeing crop up monthly. BUT I've been a bit undisciplined with variable spending recently and I'm tempted to pay half and use the balance from my sinking fund to pay off a credit card and hopefully get a balance transfer. Today is a good Friday 😁😁😁 It's payday and I got bumped to the top of my pay grade and had the bump backdated to 1st November. Whoooo! Following the email that said my broadband/phone contract for the cottage was going to increase from £48 to £72 I angrily tweeted (at 2am!) to BT that this was unacceptable. Had a reply by 9am and by close of play the same day the customer service chap confirmed renewal of same service for £45/m. There was a possibility of a chesper deal from other suppliers but I won't use Sky (for reasons!) and I'd never heard of the other companies. I'm waiting to see if they pull the same stunt when the phone/broadband contract for the flat comes up for renewal. Community Fibre are aggressively promoting some excellent sounding deals in my bit of London right now. Moral of the tale - always challenge. Also its BT's own fault for trying to price gouge. I'm lazy, if they'd said the contract was going up by their published 7.9% to around £53 I'd likely not have challenged it! But from now on I'll be challenging every single time they send a contract renewal. Bank Account - this covers my car breakdown which is less than what I would pay separately and gives me other benefits too. I've had a general plan for the whole site for ages, just need a bit more detail added in for this years planting and a decision whether the layout for the top half is one that will work. New month and so updated targets are incoming. February was full-on workwise. I'm aiming for a better work/life balance in March which means making sure that if I do some 12 hour days I compensate by working some shorter ones or taking flexidays when needed. I don't tend to take holidays April through late August/September (just the occasional long weekend) as it's a busy period at work - so I have my last proper decent break the week before Easter. I'm off to Wales with a friend on 22 March so I have 2 weeks and 4 days to Do All The Work Things. I'll be back in London around 28 March and then have the Easter weekend to catch up on laundry and whip the allotment into shape! February was not a month for achieving goals 😬😬😬 The month sped by, work was stupidly busy and it pretty much turned into a month of work, eat, sleep and repeat! Of the goals I DID achieve I watched quite a few fun films and I've totally caught the crochet bug. I finished the 6 week make a granny square blanket course and made all the squares required but have decided to add in a few more. I've mostly competed a simple granny square lap blanket and went to Unraveled - a yarn fair in Farnham - with my crochet teacher which was delightful and I now have a yarn stash! The sunny days of February seemed to occur when I was working so I got no gardening or allotmenting done. A friend was over from the US and we did a tour of the underground shelters and I went to a pub quiz with work colleagues last night which was a ridiculous amount of fun. Planned expenses for February much the same as January - but I need to start reviewing in advance of all the price rises coming. Council tax is definitely going up 5% but my sinking fund should cover that and the insurance for the Welsh cottage has increased by £100 but we have some sinking funds in the account I share with the ex to partially cover that and my personal sinking fund should cover my half of the rest. I go out of contract with my internet in March and I know my mobile bill is increasing. Eleven days into the month is a bit late posting goals but February is going to be a MONTH. I seem to be buzier than usual on all fronts - work, personal and creative which is leaving less free time and more need to be superorganised which at the moment I am...not! Still good to have goals! HEALTH - pretty much carried over from January - focusing on re-embedding good practice. At some point I hope these will become habits so I can focus on new goals. I'm really focusing on 1, 2 and 6 - gym, steps and macros to the end of the month. HAPPINESS - a lot rolled over from January. Crochet is my new obsession 😁 and we finish the granny square blanket course next Saturday so I'll be clawing my Saturday mornings back. I've started going to a crochet club on Monday mornings which I can fit in around working hours (to make sure I end up with finished projects) and hopefully the rain will let up so I can get cracking on the garden and allotment. WEALTH - my 15 mth 0% balance transfer came through so I'll be shuffling credit card balances. No council tax to pay this month 🎉 But I have automatically allocated the same amount (£170) towards car sinking funds as car insurance is due at the beginning of March. Just a recap of my other fixed outgoing expenses: Bank Account - this covers my car breakdown which is less than what I would pay separately and gives me other benefits too. Mobile Phone - Giffgaff/O2 sticking with them as the network has been great. I think perhaps its my phone apps which are causing some of my phone issues recently. 3 Charities - 2 x £10 donated to RNIB and Alzheimers Society and £6.50 to British Heart Foundation (based on £1.50 per week). These are causes I support and this little amount from me would be priceless to those that need it. Credit Union - this is partly where my emergency fund is sitting and to keep the account open. I didn't do all the #orjenise100 prompts in January (still have 12 prompts to do) but just responding to the 19 prompts I did do resulted in 307 items leaving my home. Wow - and it wasn't even difficult of painful to find those, nor was I being sneaky in how I was counting things! Using up toiletries and eating down my food cupboards are carrying on into February and quite possibly March too. In fact I suspect I don't need to buy toiletries all but I do need to have a LOT of pamper sessions to use things up! I'm finally starting to see space in my tiny overstuffed freezer and my store of tins is slowly going down too. The aim for February is minimal grocery shopping. I need to go back and look at the 12 #orjenise100 prompts I skipped (things like wardrobe, books, cds and dvds). It was a VERY good month for market research. I had a well paid 2 week diary study plus 4 other projects. I've had a good run of market research for a couple of months now but to get those 5 projects I did apply for somewhere around 50-60 projects across 15 different organisations.
