This painting depicts a mid 19th century Charleston scene of a Gullah Geechee woman 👩🏽 weaving Sweetgrass baskets outside of Market Hall. She has just sold one to a Charleston free woman of color. Market Hall, designed by Charleston architect Edward B. White, was built in the early 1840s. Throughout the 19th century, the market provided a convenient place for area farms and plantations to sell beef and produce; it also acted as a place for locals to gather and socialize. Sweetgrass baskets are traditionally comprised of lowcountry sweetgrass, bulrush, pine needles and palmetto fronds. The tradition of basket sewing originated in West Africa and has been handed down through generations of Gullah ancestors throughout the lowcountry of the southern United States. For hundreds of years the Gullah culture has thrived in the Lowcountry of the southern US. The traditions, cuisine and language can be traced to their West African ancestors. SOLD “Creole Pharmacy” 20 x 16. This painting depicts a circa 1800 New Orleans pharmacy ran by Creole Free woman of color. She stands behind an elaborate faux marble counter with an elegant neoclassical column interior displaying pharmacy and apothecary jars, arranged on shelves. A crown taxidermy alligator is suspended in the center. Her clients include an elegantly dressed Creole Free woman of color. In colonial Louisiana as well as America medical practice was much less regulated. Pharmacies which could be run by anyone after a brief apprenticeship. But that meant little in the way of regulation or standardization of treatments. Medicines of this period contained narcotics, alcohol, plants, minerals, animals and even insects as ingredients. Early pharmacists sold Native American medicine, medicinal plants as well as Voodoo potions, which were sold by pharmacists in New Orleans in the 19th century. Under colonial rule, African people brought to Louisiana as slaves were required to be baptised as Catholic, Louisiana voodoo is a blend of African spiritual beliefs and deities with Catholicism. This painting depicts a circa 1800 New Orleans pharmacy ran by Creole Free woman of color. She stands behind an elaborate faux marble counter with an elegant neoclassical column interior displaying pharmacy and apothecary jars, arranged on shelves. A crown taxidermy alligator is suspended in the center. Her clients include an elegantly dressed Creole Free woman of color. In colonial Louisiana as well as America medical practice was much less regulated. Pharmacies which could be run by anyone after a brief apprenticeship. But that meant little in the way of regulation or standardization of treatments. Medicines of this period contained narcotics, alcohol, plants, minerals, animals and even insects as ingredients. Early pharmacists sold Native American medicine, medicinal plants as well as Voodoo potions, which were sold by pharmacists in New Orleans in the 19th century. Under colonial rule, African people brought to Louisiana as slaves were required to be baptised as Catholic, Louisiana voodoo is a blend of African spiritual beliefs and deities with Catholicism. It shows a 1820’s French Quarter street scene with street performers drumming on Bamboulas and dancers on a flagstone banquette in front of a Greek Revival Townhouse. Banquette is the Creole word for sidewalk. Bamboula is the African word for drum 🪘 🥁. It is also a dance accompanied by music from these drums. Originating in Africa, the bamboula form appears in a Haitian Creole song in 1757 and bamboula became a Creole dance syncopation performed to the rhythm of the drum during festivals and ceremonies in Haiti (then Saint-Domingue). It was then exported to the United States (notably Mobile, Alabama, and the Virgin Islands) through Louisiana, by the slaves that were deported to New Orleans during the 18th century with the arrival of the displaced French settlers of the island of San Domingo especially after the Haitian Revolution. The slaves congregated on the Congo Square to the edge of the area of the French Quarter of New Orleans to dance the bamboula. In 1848, the Creole composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and whose maternal grandmother was a native of Saint-Domingue, composed a classical piece entitled Bamboula, the first of four Creole inspired piano works known as his Louisiana Quartet.
