She was probably not easy in her youth. Hahaha. And she probably hated being painted. But well, now she has to go through it, but at least she tries to look as skeptical as possible. I love it. And I love patterns, give me patterns and I'm happy. First I tried to put the exquisite pattern of the dress over her head. With the result that she looked like a grumpy Burberry bag. That could not be the solution. But I wanted to give her something like armor, something that would emphasize her closed nature. So I arranged these bejeweled flower hair accessories like a pattern, through which she can still look skeptically. And because that was a bit too cute for her, I invented these black ribbons to go with it. They give her that avant-garde it-girl touch, because to be honest, see this look, she was a privileged girl from the elite who could afford to play out moods. Maybe she was like a Paris Hilton of her time, but that interpretation might be going too far. Hidden Anonymous (Munich court painter), Photocollage 2023 . . Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1684) lived and worked in several cities for extended periods. He is one of those many artists who ended up not really being locally bound. De Heem was born in the same year as Rembrandt and would also work in his hometown for a few years. He himself was born in Utrecht, where he was presumably apprenticed to the well-known (flower) still-life painter Balthasar van der Ast. Later he moved to Antwerp where he lived most of his life. When he died in 1684, he left an oeuvre of some 270 paintings. He was particularly admired for his true-to-life rendering of diverse materials in both small cabinet pieces and large still lifes with an abundance of luxurious objects. The numerous documents of early owners show how much his work was appreciated. Not infrequently, they brought high prices, so high that he was counted among the most expensive painters of his time. Once, a still life by his hand even fetched the hefty sum of two thousand guilders; contemporary Rembrandt received twelve hundred for his 'Night Watch'. In 17th-century Dutch paintings, young people reading or writing letters are very often indicators of amorous intrigue. In this work by Gabriel Metsu, the lady is so absorbed in writing a letter that she neglects her domestic duties, symbolised by the abandoned sewing basket beside her, and fails to notice the jealous lover who angrily peers over her shoulder. The instrument standing idle in the foreground highlights the lack of harmony between the couple. Gabriel Metsu was deeply inspired by Jan Steen, and his influence can be seen in the humorous quality of this painting. Wir zeigten hierbei die Anwerbung und Musterung von Truppen durch den Statthalter der sieben Vereinigten Provinzen der Niederlande Maurits von Oranien. Die Veranstaltung fand auf dem Areal des ehemaligen Residenzschlosses der Herren von Nassau-Oranien statt, wo neben Maurits auch Wilhelm von Oranien, der Vater der „Niederlande“, lebte. VIVA SANTA MARIA! _________________________ Last weekend, we were able to take part in the event "1620 - With pikes and muskets" in Dillenburg. We presented the recruitment and mustering of troops by the governor of the seven United Provinces of the Netherlands, Maurits of Orange. The event took place on the grounds of the former residential palace of the Lords of Nassau-Orange, where William of Orange, the father of the "Netherlands", lived alongside Maurits. Special highlights were a guided tour through the casemates of the former fortress, the reenactment of the casemates as a guardroom and a great encampment with troops from the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany. Not much is known about the Witchcraft trials in Dundee, including how many victims it claimed as paperwork holding the details were lost during a fire. Even a fair amount of locals have walked past the pair of mosaics in Peter Street without realising the connection to one of only two known trials in Dundee. Grissel Jaffery was born in Aberdeen, married a respectful businessman, is said to have links to an influential family in Aberdeen, and lived through a couple of major historical events in Dundee before being accused of being a Spaewife along with her husband, by 3 local ministers. The details of what Harry Scrymgeour of St Mary's, John Guthrie of South Church, and William Rait of Third Charge (now St Paul's), accused Jaffery and her husband of have been lost but we do know that while her husband was released, Grissel after being tortured for a confession, was found guilty on November 11th 1669. As punishment, she was to be first strangled and then burnt at the stake. Grissel was the last woman to be burnt at the stake in Dundee. The mosaics depict the method of her death, while just further down the street lies a somewhat large X made from black cobblestones.
