Bargeboards are the aerodynamic devices on the car located on the floor behind the front wheels. Bargeboards consist of fins, turning vanes, vortex generators, etc. solely to control the airflow around the car. Bargeboards are continuously developed by the enginers throughout the season and are changed depending on the track. Purposes: 1. Outwash of front-wheel wake: The front wheel's wake of no use if it flows over the car body and reaches the rear aero bodywork. Turbulent air is unpredictable and the aero devices do not work for turbulent airflow. Therefore the huge wake produced by the front wheels must be pushed away from the car. This outwash leaves room for the clean air to reach the rear of the car around the sidepods. 2. Directing airflow into the radiators in sidepods: The cleaner and laminar the air the more and consistent volumes of air would be used by both side pod radiators and for the intake into the engine through turbo(though bargeboards are not responsible for the intake). Bargeboards have numerous turning vanes and vortex generators responsible for controlling the airflow around the car and one into the side pods. 3. Downwash of the wheel wake. 4. Cleaning up some of the turbulent air coming into it and sending it around and to the rear of the car 5. Sealing off the underbody airflow and thus increasing the diffuser efficiency. There are a number of turning vanes and vortex generators on the floor and bargeboards. A few of these act as an invisible side skirt. These vortex generators produce vortices that run along the edge of the floor, sealing off the low-pressure air reaches that reaches the diffuser. Visit our previous posts on F1 Basics on Wings and Vortex Generators. F1 Front Wings do more than just producing downforce. Apart from producing downforce, its purpose is to avoid the wheel wake getting under the body and disrupting the efficiency of the diffuser and underbody downforce. It is the first part of the car to come in contact with air so its purpose has to send as much air as possible over the car, resulting in creating low pressure below the car. End plates' outwash stops the high-pressure air above the wing from spilling underneath into the low-pressure region. The vortices produced and airflow across the endplates is to carry away the front wheel wake sideways away from the car. This lets the clean airflow over the body of the car and reaches the rear wing and other aerodynamic bodywork at the rear. New 2022 front wing design has no gap between wings and nose(for Y250) so no turbulence and end plates are smooth, reducing turbulence left by the car. This new wing produces less downforce but also loses less downforce due to turbulence air left by the leading car. Refer the post on 'F1 Basics: WINGS' for better understanding of aerofoils. Definitions: Flow Attachment: It is the phenomenon of the air where it tends to flow along curved surfaces. The flow attachment decreases as the airspeed over a surface increases. F1 cars have different kinds of vortex generators(VG) all over it playing different roles in directing the air around the car. Vortices produced by the vortex generators(VG) are created when the high-pressure air is allowed to mix into low-pressure air, creating tiny tornadoes. These swivelling air can act as a strong boundary. These also enhance flow attachments as air may leave the surface at high velocities resulting in turbulences. These turbulences are not desirable for the car's aerodynamic device rendering them useless. Aerofoil has an end. Vortices are produced as a by-product to lift or downforce and also produce drag. This concept of vortex production is used for the VGs. These are wisely used to reduce any drag that would be produced on the car. Definitions: Coanda effect: The phenomenon where fluid tends to attach to the surface and flows along its surface. Stagnation Point: At the front of the wing, the air hits the wing and comes to zero speed. There are numerous phenomena around the wing like streamline flow and circulation flow characteristics, Bernoulli’s principle, Newton's laws etc. For simplicity of concepts we shall just consider the last two topics. Bernoulli’s principle: The basis of this principle is the conservation of energy which also states fluid moves from high pressure to low pressure. Air over the wing accelerates since particles have to pass through a constricted area. This results in lowering of pressure and velocity increases to a certain point over the wing. Now the air that flows downwards from the stagnation point, the velocity is less due to stagnation and the fluid passes slowly resulting in high pressure. Newton’s 3rd law: The fluid attaches to the wing and keeps flowing along the wing(due to Coanda effect). At downwash, the high-speed air from the top pushes the air under the wing downwards as it leaves the wing’s end. This downwash exerts a force on the wing, upwards due to equally opposite forces. These occur simultaneously and none of those can be neglected.(there are many other principles playing the roles in producing lift/downforce). F1 Wings: F1 wings are inverted aerofoils. These produce downforce that provides grip at corners and the corner exits, giving high cornering speeds and good accelerations. The wings come with high drag as a byproduct that acts against the movement of the car. F1 front wing provides downforce to the front axle and its angle of attack is changed for the balance of the car. F1 rear wing comes with two flaps that act as one huge wing. But such multi-element wings reduce the flow separation and stalling of the wing. Do not forget to check out the meme made by @formula1telugu at the end! Diffuser allows the low pressure, fast-moving air from underneath the car to expand smoothly into the ambient(atmospheric) pressure. Without a diffuser, there creates a separation bubble(kind of vacuum, but not exactly). The air here is very turbulent and draggy and has low pressure. This low pressure tries to pull the car into the separation bubble behind the car. This exerts the pulling force on the car's rear towards the backside. This slows the car down and is very disadvantageous for a car. Now with the diffuser present, the fast-moving air expands into the back of the car, preventing the formation of a separation bubble, thus reducing drag at the rear of the car. The efficiency of the diffuser depends on the angle of the diffuser. A very large diffuser angle stalls the air, resulting in loss of downforce of the car. Small-angle results in a separation bubble. F1 engineers have to get the approximate angle of the diffuser to function at different speeds of the car. Engineers also have to tackle the wake created by the rear wheels using vortex generators, sealing them off from the diffuser air coming from the underbody. The vertical strakes/fences help guide smooth airflow into the rear of the car without causing turbulence and different pressure pockets underside and those that are close to the wheel prevent the wake of the rear wheel to bleed into the diffuser. • Vortex generators will be discussed in future posts.
