Today I got to volunteer and participate in one of my favorite yearly events- the Cleveland Best Buddies Friendship Walk! This year my mom and I volunteered at the Poster Making Station and walked with @steve44070 for team Eagles Fly! @bestbuddies is a non-profit organization that provides support, events, and community outreach for adults with disabilities. They has various chapters in every state and have partnered with colleges to provide a housing community- they also have chapters at local K-12 schools. Today was my last run of Week Two's running training with @teamrunningmadeeasy Today has been such a positive day for me! After my easy run (well apart from the two big hills😅⛰️⛰️) my fitbit showed my VO2 Max has gone up again!!🥹🥰🙏 The hard work training with my running under the guidance of Eilish and Michael and the hard work in the gym with @so.fit.pt is paying off! 💪💪💕 I also hit my weight loss goal! 😃💪💪 I am so so close (7lbs to be exact) away from returning to a healthy weight for me.🫶 I am itching to get there but I have learnt from my experience over the last year, patience is key and to just keep putting in consistent, hard work.🙏 Sam, my PT, as always was so great yesterday helping me with a really innovative adjustment so I can use a barbell ☺️🙏 I have struggled so much with that with my dexterity and weak arm. He has given me suggestions for keeping my spine protected during exercises🙏, he has helped me with stretches for running☺️ and asking about what my running coaches think about our next few weeks and months.🙏 Amazing group of people all around! Thank you for supporting me.☺️🫶🏃♀️🤳🏋♀️🙏 I appreciate it so much. It has been a really tough journey with my immense health problems, my medications, medication side effects, weight gain, spinal surgery and a very difficult recovery. But I never expected we would get this far where I would be within touching distance of getting my body back to a good place again.☺ I can already feel that this is allowing me to enjoy running training again and feel ownership of my body and some freedom and independence again!❤️ I don't *have* to workout, to eat right and fuel my body properly, try and stay in a good routine for my health - I *GET* to do this!! AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH AND STAFF FEATURE April is Autism Awareness Month, and the MSK Centre would like to take a moment to celebrate the contributions of one of our team members, Jordache. Jordache, who is a part time administrative assistant with our MSK Work Assist team, is a valued member of our team and brings creativity, dedication, and a fresh perspective to everything she does. Her contributions remind us that inclusivity and diversity strengthens and enriches our workplace. Jordache can excel in data entry and providing support to her fellow administrators. Jordache says that being a part of the MSK Work Assist team has been a perfect match for her skills and has provided her with an environment where she can thrive. Outside of the office, her passions lie in the realms of art and music. She enhanced her artistic talents at Conestoga College, where she completed the Arts Design Foundations Diploma program. Additionally, she delved into the world of music, particularly mastering the piano, and earned a diploma in basic theory and fundamentals Levels 1 and 2 from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Family time is incredibly important to Jordache, as is the companionship of her Scottish Fold cat, Theodora. At the MSK Centre, creating an inclusive workplace environment is at the core of our values. We believe that inclusivity and diversity is an essential part of any workplace, and everyone deserves to feel valued and respected. From offering flexible work arrangements to promoting open communication and providing training and guidance, we’re committed to fostering an environment where every voice is heard and every individual can thrive. It's been a fun week, and I had the opportunity to sub a couple classes @hot.power.laramie Teaching yoga is a challenge, and I've learned that much of the work as a rookie teacher is done with books, pens, and paper, using the mat to study rather than practicing moving and sitting in stillness. The best part about teaching is the opportunity to learn. I strive to listen to my students as well as the wonderful guidance I get from @hippyandherdog.yoga and all the other teachers at the studio. Especially as I have come to terms with a specific anatomical hip issue that flared up this fall during teacher training, I physically cannot move as much due to pain and unnecessary wear and tear on my joints. This means, reviewing my notes and rehearsing sequences and poses, along with modifications and alignment cues, mentally. Finding a rhythm in my mind so I feel confident AF when I step into the studio to lead a class. These issues have also made me more aware of how to make practice more accessible, and meet people where their mental, physical, and emotional bodies are for each practice. I really emphasize the use of props, and encourage the balance of pushing limits and respecting boundaries by listening to ones body. Even with my hip issues, I'm realizing I'm still extremely mobile, and I try not to take that for granted. I'm committed to continuing to learn how to make all kinds of yoga accessible to all bodies and disabilities, and understanding that it takes deep knowledge of a practice and creativity to support anyone willing to come in for a practice. I wanted to give a huge shout out to @cirquejoel and @upsidedown.izzy for providing further insight into ethics of disability awareness and body positivity when I met them briefly this summer in London. SLS's first time in print. And what an honour it was. "We're already here" is a project dreamed up and beautifully brought to life by @tillynelsonphoto . A showcase on how people with disabilities and visual differences participate in society, and how it's high time we are not only acknowledged for our contribution, but recognized as much as anyone else. For years I have been the singular voice of disability advocacy in my work settings, in hopes that I can set an example for how companies can make immaterial changes to their business that would welcome people like me as an employee. Not all accessibility needs are the same, so I encourage anyone in a position of management to take a look at your processes and see where changes can be made and to strive for true inclusivity. I don't want to be the solo voice. I want to see people like me in print, in meetings, running the show. I want to change the game.
