Orchids are just so fascinating 🧐 The Miltonia spectabilis is a species of flowering plant in the Orchidaceae family. Common names are: Pansy Orchid , Bailarina, 华丽堇花兰. The M.spectabilisis a pseudobulbous, evergreen, herbaceous, epiphytic perennial that can grow up to 30 cm tall and has green to yellowish-green, linear, strap-like leaves. It produces large, scented flowers that are comprised of three sepals and two petals (which are usually white or pale pink), plus a large lip that is often bright magenta or purple in color. It blooms from May to November. After it finishes flowering, it is followed by an elongated capsule that contains numerous dust-like seeds. This orchid is hardy to zone 10. It is native to Southeastern 🇧🇷 ( Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo )where it can be found growing on trees in cool mountain forests. The Miltonia genus is named after Charles Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, the 5th Earl Fitzwilliam, whose title was Viscount Milton. There are some cultivars/hybrids available like : • ‘Rosea’ has typically has pale pink flowers with a lighter pink lip, giving it a softer overall appearance. • ‘Alba’ Known for its nearly white flowers, this variety has a subtle and elegant look, with the lip sometimes showing a hint of pink or purple. The Miltonia spectabilis is a diverse and visually appealing species. The Ansellia africana is a species of flowering plant in the Orchidaceae family. Common names are : Leopard Orchid, Luiperdorgidee, Orquídea Leopardo , Luipaard Orchidee, Imfeyenkawu, 豹斑兰属, กล้วยไม้เสือดาว. Ansellia africana is a herbaceous, evergreen, epiphytic perennial that can grow up to 100cm tall and has numerous slender, erect stem-like pseudobulbs that arise from a mass of upward-growing aerial roots. It has long and narrow, leathery strap-like leaves. It produces sweetly scented (to me, similar to cinnamon) yellow or greenish-yellow blooms with reddish-brown or purple spots. The flowers are comprised of three sepals/petals and have a yellow lip (Labellum) that appear on terminal inflorescences, it blooms from November to August but it’s peak flowering time is from March till May. After it finished flowering it is followed up by an elongated, oval pod that contains numerous tiny seeds that splits open when ripe to disperse the seeds. This orchid is hardy to zone 10. It has a large native range, it can be found from 🇬🇼 to 🇸🇩 and down south to Northern 🇿🇦 ( provinces Limpopo, Mpumalanga , Gauteng and North West )where it can be found growing on trees and shrubs in both humid and dry forests. In its native habitat the sweetly scented lowers attract Hawk moths that pollinate the flowers during the night. This orchid Ansellia africana is named after John Ansell, who was a British assistant botanist on an expedition to South Africa. It has earned a rather odd name, the Trash Basket Orchid, due to it’s ability to collect and digest falling leaf litter with its upwards growing aerial roots ( almost like a basket ) and use it as nutrients. The Dendrobium pendulum is a species of flowering plant in the Orchidaceae family. Common names are: Wizard’s Cane , Dendrobium Péndulo ,肿节石斛, หวายปม, Hoàng Thảo Trúc Phật Bà. The D.pendulum is an epiphytic deciduous, herbaceous perennial that can grow up to 90cm tall with a pendulous habit. It has stems with swollen nodes and the leaves are lanceolate in shape. It produces small scented flowers that have equal sized, oblong, pointed sepals and petals that are white with pink/purple tips and an egg-yolk yellow throat, it blooms from September till May. After it finished flowering it produces a seed capsule. This orchid is hardy to zone 10. It is native to South Central 🇨🇳, 🇻🇳, 🇱🇦, 🇹🇭, 🇲🇲, 🇮🇳 and 🇧🇩 where it can be found growing on tree trunks/branches in wet rainforests. 🇦🇺 “Dendrobium prenticei has several synonyms, such as Dendrobium lichenastrum var. prenticei as well as Dockrilla prenticei. It’s a miniature, epiphytic species from Nort-East Australia. Found at sealevel to 1200m, it likes bright light and moderate waterings throughout the year. 🪴Personal experience: I grow D. prenticei mounted on cork slab, in the intermediate-warm orchidarium. I use a 60w led lamp 40-50cm far from the plant, 10-12h/day, 60% R.H. and good air movement. I water daily during mid-spring and summer, reducing waterings in winter, while still providing good air movement.
