Alweer bijna de laatste dag van de maand. Morgen 30 april hoop ik 56 jaar te worden, dus druk bezig met alle voorbereidingen. Het wordt in elk geval prachtig zonnig weer, heerlijk om het buiten te kunnen vieren. Wil straks nog 2 taarten maken en ben wat in huis aan de poets. Mijn man heeft inmiddels bijna alle tuintegels ontdaan van de groene aanslag. Alleen nog even de stofzuiger door de overkapping halen en dan is dat ook weer netjes. De houten lantaarn op het bankje kocht ik op Koningsdag, die heeft trouwens het hele huis gezien, maar denk dat dit de mooiste plek is. De oude zinken ton komt nog bij mijn ouders vandaan. Dankbaar dat ik weer in een jaar ouder mag worden en dit samen kan vieren met ons gezin, familie en wat vrienden. Aquilegia has attractive leaves at the base of the plant, with a long stem supporting delicate, nodding, bell-shaped flowers which can be single, double, and the more unusual spurred varieties, with colours ranging from white through pale yellow to purples, blues, pinks, and reds. Best suited to sunny or semi-shaded positions, aquilegia will grow on most soils but prefers not to dry out in summer. It will self-seed so is great for a naturalistic planting scheme, and the nectar-rich flowers are attractive to bumblebees. A quick flick through the autumn changes in the B&B home garden today, with a focus on Echinops (the blue spikey flower in the first two images). The first photograph was shared on our stories last week, and I had lots of messages about the ‘blue flower’. The blue flower, of course, is Echinops - a gorgeous, and hardy, perennial. This particular plant is in a built up garden bed with heavy clay beneath pretty average ‘top soil’. This summer I made it my mission to apply Popul8 regularly, and the bed was so much happier and healthier because of it. Hence this lovely stand of Echinops which are now coming to the end of their season. I long ago lost the tag for this plant, but am confident it is Echinops Veitchs Blue. A frost and dry tolerant plant worth a place in a sunny garden. We do not have them in store at the moment …. Look out for them in late spring. Not so frost hardy, and not unexpectedly so, were the tomatoes, pumpkins and dahlias, all of which were badly frost affected last week and have been picked and pulled up, with garlic going in under the pea straw mulch in the second to last image. Plenty of Crab Apples though. This variety is Malus ‘Gorgeous’. It is a spectacular tree for its fruit alone. If you’re keen on the fruit to make crab apples jelly be sure to pop in to our Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea Trading table this Wednesday 1 May … I am off to pick and bag some crab apples now, and the dogs continue their daily tussle over fallen fruit, sticks toys and more. Lunch is packed for tomorrow. A spinach salad with cucumber, aged cheddar, blackberries, apple chunks, strawberries, and pecans. Tomorrow I will toss it with a Blackberry Ginger Balsalmic Vinegar from @evoolution104. Oatmeal bowls are prepped for breakfast and only require blueberries and milk to be added at time of cooking. Checked on the rhubard plants this evening. Both the Strawberry Rhubarb and the Victoria Rhubarb are growing well. The chickens seem to have spent most of today out of the weather elements. 🐔🥚.
