Species: Southern Rock sole (Lepidopsetta bilineata) General description: There are two kinds of Rock sole that are extremely hard to identify sometimes. Southern Rock sole’s eyed side are shades of brown, reddish brown, to greenish with irregular speckles, spots, blotches, and bands. Blind side white with glossy over muscle bands. Small mouth and eyes. They can be caught at various depths but are more abundant in shallow water over cobble substrates. Southern Rock sole can grow up to 23 inches and live up to 20 years. The only to know if you have a Southern or Northern to be sure. You have to lift up the gill plate and could their gill rakers on the lower part of the first arch. This particular fish had 6 rakers. Rock sole with 6 and less are Southern and Rock sole with 7 or more are Northern. This is called “brood parasitism,” On the other hand, species such as Common Terns and Black-necked Stilts also may parasitize avocet nests. First snorkeling of the year in home waters of Denia, meaning Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserve. Everything here is the same as everywhere else just fishes are bigger, less afraid of you, much more flora and more rare species, in other words - it is a snorkeling paradise on the Mediterranean Sea standards. All thanks to forbidden fishing and limited boating. The only downside is that it is harder to spot octopus in such a rich environment. I think I found a lair, or at least hunting grounds of one individual but got too cold before thoroughly investigation. Two tuberous plants are flowering now, P. ‘Ardens’ and P. luteum. Many people are familiar with ‘Ardens’; it is a cross between P. lobatum x P. fulgidum. Because of its bright flowers, it is a favourite of gardeners, this is a big plant with large, beautiful leaves. But a small species from the Northern Cape is rare both in nature and culture. P. luteum is a geophyte with irregularly pinnate to bipinnatisect leaves and yellow flowers, hence the specific epithet "luteum". This is a special species - in it the stamens are twisted a unique way, forming a pollen-lined tunnel to the nectar tube, with open anthers facing to the front. Dendrobium capituliflorum 🤍💚 The cushion dendrobium is a really neat species indigenous of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. Alone each flower does not look like much but together they create a beautiful display of cute little clusters of flowers. As the plant grow older it will create more and more of those cushions of flowers, and it can rebloom from old leafless pseudobulbes! It’s a cool and easy to grow dendrobium species, and it’s given a prehistoric look with its white and green flowers. I wonder what insects might pollinate those cluster of flowers!? 🤔 This plant might be a bit unruly when grown into a pot, as the canes are quite heavy, I might mount my plant. 📍Hailing from Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. My "Every animal is equal" series!😁👀💖 Finally it's done! And it took a LONG time to finsh (I posted my first wolf eye on the 21st of January!). However throughout that time I learned so much about how different animal eyes are built, and about those animals in general. Especially when it came to their exploitation. To summarise the entire series, I'd like to underline that although we may look very different from each other, have different ways of thinking and expressing emotions, we are all animals, we are each other's equals. Us humans are not superior, we do not have the right to treat other animals the way we do. We need to be more compassionate and empathetic, and we need to know about the horrors behind the meat, egg, fur and dairy industries. It's our right to know and stand against it.
