Just finished the guitar project I've been working on this week (2012 Riviera that had a completely broken neck and all the parts had been stripped). Neck is fixed and I bought no parts to finish this out, using only spare parts I had sitting around. Gretsch blacktop pickups, Bigsby B70, CTS pots and quality capacitors, Switchcraft switch/jack, Dunlop strap-locks, and Gibson tuners. This semi-hollowbody electric guitar (a Riviera model) had a broken neck and all of the electronics, tuners, and other parts were stripped out before I got it. The neck is repaired and I'm fitting it out with spare parts I have laying around. So far some Gibson tuners, a Bigsby B70 vibrato that I just stripped the gold plating off of, some nickel strap-locks, and an early 80s Japanese ABR style bridge which I also stripped the gold off of, in an effort to have all of the hardware matching with a nickel color scheme. I love this body/neck style but never liked the setup of three 'dogear' P90 pickups, so I will be Frankenstein-ing the heck out of this. It'll probably end up with two Gretsch blacktop pickups and a custom made pickguard or something. PART TWO! When Eddie Van Halen originally painted his Frankenstein guitar black and white in 1977 he applied a fairly thick coat of white, how thick exactly is hard to say. Photos of the guitar taken during the 1978 tour clearly show thick tape lines, if you look closely they actually seem to cast shadows. In March of 1979 just days before the beginning of the VH2 world tour he decided to give the guitar a different look by adding a coat of red Schwinn bicycle lacquer to the existing black and white striped design. To prepare the ash body for the new paint job he aggressively sanded the white with very corse sandpaper, possibly trying to remove the thick paint completely or to just smooth out those hard tape lines. Decades later in 2019 high resolution photos taken at the Met reveal 60 to 80 grit sanding marks over most of the bodies surface under the red paint. Even though he burned through the black and white paint in several places the white coat remained somewhat intact. So exactly how thick was the original coat of white? Thick enough to withstand Eddie’s harsh sanding job. Next is one of the most fascinating quirks about this guitar, and in true Eddie style he used what was at hand to create what would become those iconic stripes. Instead of masking out the stripes and random shapes with the usual painters tape, he used gaffer tape. Gaffer tape is a cotton cloth woven tape used in stage productions to secure things like cables and wires. Eddie was photographed in early 1979 goofing around with a roll of gaffer tape during rehearsal. In the photo Eddie is proudly showing off a moustache and beard that he made out of the tape by ripping it into small strips, the exact same technique that he would later use when masking the various stripes on the Frankenstein body. The cup represents many hours of paint samples in an effort to repeat Eddie’s devil-may-care process. 7 String FrankenTele. Only. One. Pickup. No amount of precision went into this project. Everything was freehanded and thrown together in 2 days. There's tool marks everywhere, wounds of neglect, and a few extra holes that weren't there before. I've never cared about winning pageants, but this is the closest thing to a pure riff stick I've ever built. Started life as a Michael Kelly. I knew this would be a project guitar, but it sat on my rack for years before I had the time to do anything about it. This past weekend, I did some fretwork on it for practice and decided on a whim that it was time. Headstock reshape inspired by Caparison and Mayones headstocks. Bridge is an Ibanez V77 leftover from my RGD pickup swap. @foreverunchained1981 has been posting photos showing the back of the #eddievanhalen #frankensteinguitar from 1978, which reminded me of a photo I saw in the Wolf & Rissmiller Concerts Sports & Entertainment Guide printed late 1978 (which I still have - I kept EVERYTHING!). I dug out the guide for him and found the photo (shot by @neilzlozower) but check out the second image here of the two-page spread, which totally blew me away! The subliminal forces strike again! Another coincidence that foretold the future. Dig that #neilzlozower shot of Sammy with a Gibson Explorer. In the guide I also found a reprint of the ad for the July 8, 1978 Van Halen headline show at the #sandiegosportsarena which was my very first #vanhalen concert. Eddie Van Halen used this as his main guitar from 1977-1983. Fun fact, the red, white, and black guitar is the same guitar as the black and white guitar. OK, so my main conundrum with this build right now is the pickguard (original one featured in the first photo). I really dislike how it sort of shrinks away from the body contour in area 1, while also having sort of an inelegant curve in area 2. Problem is, as can be seen in the second photo, it's significantly smaller than a typical strat pickguard. Strat scratch plates aren't exactly hard to come by, but I'm not sure I have the tools and skills to mod one into a shape that will fit this body. Coronado? Casino? Stratocaster? CORONADINOCASTER!! -Started as an empty 60’s Fender Coronado body, with switch hole busted out. Previous owner “stabilized” the cracking binding by flooding with Elmers glue. -Switch hole repaired with an ebony plug glued to a rosewood backing plate. -Made walnut/maple dogear pickup shims to mount some @curtis_novak_pickups Casino pickups I had laying around. -Attached a strat neck obtained from an estate sale. (I may build a custom neck for this someday)… - @tonepros bridge, @bigsby trem, appropriate vintage Coronado knobs from ebay.
