HUGE JWST NEWS!!! ☁️ Webb has mapped the weather on exoplanet WASP-43 b which is a hot Jupiter located 280 light-years away. WASP-43 b is tidally locked, meaning that one side faces the star at all times and the other is in permanent darkness. Webb has found that the planet is clear on its day side and cloudy on its night side and its equatorial winds are a STAGGERING 5,000 mph!! Hubble had previously looked at WASP-43 b prior to Webb and found water vapor on the dayside and also suggested clouds on the nightside which Webb has confirmed. Webb’s data has found water vapor on both sides along with information about temperature, clouds, winds, and atmospheric composition. Having data like this about exoplanets will help us to determine if their atmospheres are suitable for life to exist, meaning if they contain the necessary elements and gases that can sustain life and even prove that life might already exist (biosignatures). This is only the beginning and JWST is paving the way for groundbreaking exoplanet science! . . . #jwst #jameswebb #webbtelescope #jameswebbtelescope #jameswebbspacetelescope #exoplanet #wasp43b #exoplanetatmosphere #weather #discovery #tidallylocked #nasa #astronomy #science #sciencecommunication

. . . . . #nasa #telescopio #jameswebbspacetelescope #telescopiohubble #space #espacio #galaxia #nebulosa #agujeronegro

Meet the Whale Galaxy (slide 2) and its cosmic companion, the Crowbar Galaxy (slide 3). Although their shapes got them their names, there's a lot more going on with these two. The Whale galaxy is similar in size to our own Milky Way galaxy and is found in the Canes Venatici constellation. It has a raging core creating new and bight stars, fueled by supernovae. Not too far from it is the Crowbar galaxy, which appears to have gone through a collision or two, leaving it heavily distorted, but with a lot of character. P.S. - Zoom around to see hundreds of tiny little galaxies scattered throughtout! The universe is big, it’s vast, it’s beyond what we can fully comprehend. And that’s okay. Because in that vastness, there’s room for wonder, for discovery, for exploration. Every time we look up at the night sky, we’re reminded of how small we are, but also of how much potential we have to understand the mysteries of the cosmos. So let’s embrace the unknown, let’s push the boundaries of our understanding, and let’s never stop reaching for the stars. This image of part of the Horsehead Nebula, captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and released on April 29, 2024, shows the nebula in a whole new light, capturing the region’s complexity with unprecedented spatial resolution. Located roughly 1,300 light-years away, the nebula formed from a collapsing interstellar cloud of material, and glows because it is illuminated by a nearby hot star. The gas clouds surrounding the Horsehead have already dissipated, but the jutting pillar is made of thick clumps of material and therefore is harder to erode. Astronomers estimate that the Horsehead has about 5 million years left before it too disintegrates. Text Credit: NASA/Monika Luabeya Image Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, K. James Webb vs Hubble van sterrenstelsel NGC 628! 🤩 SWIPE ➡️ voor de high-res fotos. Beiden laten hetzelfde spiraalvormig sterrenstelsel zien, maar Webb is donker en Hubble is licht. Waarom? . Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying."   With the above quote Sir Arthur C. Clarke perfectly captured the essence of one of the holygrails of Astrobiology - to find a life of an independent origin outside Earth.  The search for life beyond Earth is one of the profound pursuits of humanity. And with the billion dollars toy like James Webb Space Telescope we are well equipped to search for signatures of life of an independent origin.  The James Webb Space Telescope had smelled something interesting cooking up on the distant exoplanet K2-18b. What they detected was dimethyl sulfide, or DMS for short, a compound that, here on Earth, is a kind of olfactory signature of life, largely produced by sea-dwelling phytoplankton. Prompted by these findings, the mighty eye of James Webb recently focussed for solid eight hours to gazing intensely at this intriguing oceanic world, which sits 124 light-years away.  DMS is a molecule that is often cooked by planktons on Earth. What if the same holds true on K2-18b, then we may be onto something extraordinary. However, the frustrating part is the sheer distance—124 light years is a bit too far for a quick jaunt, making hands-on research somewhat challenging. The recent stargaze by Webb's spectrometer has also shown that this exoplanet is not only potentially watery but enveloped in a thick, hydrogen-rich atmosphere with plentiful methane and carbon dioxide. The blend of these gases also makes the planet an interesting places to investigate from the perspective of Astrobiology.  Confirming DMS could turn the page on a new chapter in the annals of scientific history, and help us take closer to one of the most profound questions if we are alone in the Universe or there are others with whom we share our Universe. We are fine with alien life being solely microbial too Image credit: Unsplash

Saturn's Vanishing Rings!!!!! The rings are vanishing, not really vanishing. But they are disappearing from how we see it from Earth. This is due to a phenomenon called the "ring plane crossing". As Saturn orbits around the sun, it periodically turns it's rings edge-on to earth once every 15 years! As the rings shrink, them and the Cassini's division become harder to be seen from a small telescope. By the estimation of the photos taken here, it is estimated that Saturns rings will be almost a straight line in about 2-3 years from now. #saturn #space #telescope #hubblespacetelescope #jameswebbspacetelescope #science #space #scientist #nasa #isro #spaceagency #saturn #rings #cassinidivision #earth #moon #solarsystem #sun

Webb Captures Top of Iconic Horsehead Nebula in Unprecedented Detail Webb’s new view focuses on the illuminated edge of the nebula’s distinctive structure. The Horsehead Nebula is prancing across the cosmic stage in new infrared views from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. Extreme close-ups of the horse’s “mane” from Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) showcase a dynamic region that transitions from a mostly neutral, warm area of gas and dust within the nebula (represented in blue) to surrounding hot, ionized gas (red). Webb’s observations will allow astronomers to investigate how dust in the nebula blocks and emits light, and to better understand the nebula’s shape. https://webbtelescope.org/contents/news-releases/2024/news-2024-119 #nasa #space #jwst #jameswebbspacetelescope

Mane Character Energy 🐴 The Horsehead Nebula is famously known for…looking like a horse’s head. Webb captured the top of the "horse's mane" of this iconic nebula, giving us the sharpest infrared images of the region to date. The ultraviolet radiation from young massive stars is what influences the chemistry within the nebula. This region is considered one of the best for studying how radiation from stars interacts with interstellar matter. This portion of the Horsehead Nebula is about 0.8 light years across. In the near-infrared, young stars peep through the ethereal blueish clouds, and distant galaxies sprinkle the background. Read more at the link in our bio! The top half of the image is the black background of space with one prominent, bright white star with Webb’s 8-point diffraction spikes. Additional stars and galaxies are scattered throughout the image, although very few are seen through the thick clouds at bottom and all are significantly smaller than the largest star. #JWST #Horse #MainCharacter #Nebula #Space #Stars #JamesWebbSpaceTelescope

The tadpole nebulae are dense streams of dust and gas about 10 light years long, embedded inside a greater emission region known as IC410. Similar to the pillars of creation, these tadpoles of dust are in the process of collapsing to form new stars. They get their shape from the intense stellar wind and pressure of the star forming region they live inside of! This week a print of Jupiter is in the open call exhibition at the Luna Grande Gallery, Istanbul. I know, amazing isn’t it! To think that if @knot.clever hadn’t sent me that photo it wouldn’t have got made. # textilearts #jameswebbspacetelescope #makersgonnamake

When someone tells you the world is flat, or that people know nothing etcetc refer them to this nasa photograph of the pillars of creation taken by the James webb telescope. This is an amazing optical instrument with a tolerance or 1/5000th of a human hair over a 6m.mirror that took 2 1/2 years to polish, 5 sunshields made of wafer thin material harder than steel with over 100 operations to deploy at a distance of 1m miles. Now tell me the earth is flat Disclaimer this is not my photograph and is a NASA image all rights and ownership of the image are that of NASA #nasa #jameswebbspacetelescope #space #astronomy #science #astrophotography #hampshireastronomicalgroup #darksky #darkskyreserve #flatearth #flatearthsociety #creakyblinder #scimandan #space

Here are this week's pictures of the week! The first picture shows an unusually hot and bright star forming in the middle of an emission nebula and changing the dynamics of the gas cloud. This resulted in the beautiful formation. The second image displays the Sulainman Mountains in Pakistan captured from the ISS. As the mountains rise over 3000 meters the haze and clouds are not able to pass. The third image shows the Giant Stellar Nursery about 3 million light years away. It is over 1,300 light-years across making it the second biggest nebula in our local group of galaxies. Have a good week and thank to Rowan Prangley, NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI and the ISS astronauts for the images! #the_quantum00 #nasa #jameswebbspacetelescope #jwst #galaxy #spacephotography #pictureoftheweek #nebula #star #stars #galaxy #mountains #iss #internationalspacestation

🌍Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas), which produces heat-trapping gases. Greenhouse gases (also known as GHGs) are gases in the earth's atmosphere that trap heat. Five key greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbons, and water vapor. The direct consequences of man-made climate change include: 👉rising maximum temperatures. 👉rising minimum temperatures. 👉rising sea levels, melting glaciers 👉higher ocean temperatures. 👉an increase in heavy precipitation (heavy rain and hail) 👉increase in the proportion of violent tropical cyclones. 👉increase in aridity and drought.
