And while technology is ever changing, and there’s definitely an app for that, some of my favorite party tricks are in-camera. I wrote an essay with and about #moss It’s a text from the genre of „edutainment“ (term proposed by Johanna M. E. Green), which in my case means a mixture of personal poetry and education. This is the attachment I built for my camera to record spectra. It’s a simple tube to control how light falls on a diffraction grating in front of the lens. The tube is bent to the diffraction angle of light that centers the visible spectrum on the grating that I use. You can calculate this angle to roughly 30° for 550nm light using a 1000 line/mm grating. I cut a poster tube to the proper angle and painted everything black to minimize reflections, then mounted the diffraction grating in an empty filter ring. Light comes in from the slit to strike the grating at a 30° angle from the lens so the spectrum appears projected directly in front of the camera. The simplicity of this setup lends to a lot of playfulness. My camera can now take a traditionally scientific view and break it out of the lab. The spectral data presents itself raw in my live view instead of a static colorless graph. I can smoothly transition between science experiment and creative experiment just by twisting the zoom ring. I’ve been able to experiment with seeing light in new ways and am building an intuition for seeing the composition of light sources. So far, I’ve only shown traditional applications of such a device. 2 years ago I took these photos of #IridescentVapourTrails behind a #Jet2Holidays #Boeing737 flight #LS685 from East Midlands to Faro. It was photographed from #Oxfordshire, UK at 14:21 BST 18/04/22 with a Canon 1100D + 300mm zoom lens. This effect is created when tiny water droplets condense out over the aircraft wing. Semaine 15 du #nikonpassion52 Avec le thème de "l'Eau" je voulais expérimenter la longue exposition de jour avec des cascades. Mais comme on a pas toujours des cascades sous la main quand on en a besoin, j'ai décidé de continuer dans la veine un peu surréaliste de la semaine dernière que j'affectionne tant, et de m'amuser avec la diffraction de l'eau. Pour être tout à fait transparente (eau, transparente, tu l'as ?), cette séance a été un peu compliquée, une semaine chargée, de la fatigue, très peu de temps à consacrer à la prise de vue etc. J'ai eu du mal à parvenir à un résultat qui me satisfasse, et ce n'est pas complètement le cas même si j'aime bien cette image. I took a spectrum of the Sun using the eclipsing Moon to create the slit I needed to see the Sun’s Fraunhofer lines. This is a type of eclipse photo I haven’t seen before. I figured it would be possible but hadn’t seen anyone attempt it. With a bit of practice beforehand and some experiments to find the right camera settings, I was able to capture this within the 20-second window. What you’re seeing is the crescent Sun so close to the start of totality that the absorption lines become visible in crescent shapes. This usually needs a very narrow slit (see one of my previous posts), but here, I just waited for the Moon to create the right conditions. Also attaching my photos from totality. This is my second total eclipse. During my first, I was on a ship 2 days off the coast of Japan in 2009 and took no photos for the full 6 minutes and 39 seconds, the longest totality until 2132. It was almost… long. I really got to take it in. My second eclipse was very different. A park in Ohio, a bag full of camera gear, and a goal that could fail. There is something sacrificial about being an artist or a scientist that I felt very keenly after this eclipse. A dissection of an experience in the hopes of reconstructing it with new and beautiful insight. No matter how unique your outcome, there will be something irretrievably left behind.
