Plexippus petersi is a house spider, living indoors, and admired for the skilful way it hunts and catches mosquitoes, flies and other invertebrates. It has also been found living in crops in the Philippines, in one instance in a rice field infested with the armyworm Spodoptera mauritia, and in another, in a corn field attacked by the northern armyworm Mythimna separate. This spider has been investigated as a control agent for houseflies and showed potential as a bio-control agent. Here's another architectural wonder from one of our friendly neighborhood spiders! ๐ท This Dome Tent Spider (๐๐บ๐ณ๐ต๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ข sp., provisional identification ๐. ๐ค๐ช๐ค๐ข๐ต๐ณ๐ฐ๐ด๐ข, Garden Tent-web Spider) had its complex web built on the bushes lining the SOM Forest walk. Shining in the afternoon sun, the dome-shaped structure was very evident, despite it being positioned between leaves and not being very large! Can you spot the spider, positioned at the top of the cupola? The spider silk used by this species is not sticky, and when prey, like small insects, run into the tent and get trapped, the spider will quickly grab them and repair damage to the web. Suspended above the dome are four fuzzy bean-shaped egg sacs. Each sac contains multiple eggs, which are fiercely guarded by the spider mom! We feel you, little fella! Sometimes, we also just want to curl into a little ball and hide, especially after a long weekend! This Double-tailed Tent Spider (๐๐บ๐ณ๐ต๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ข ๐ฆ๐น๐ข๐ฏ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข) was walking about its intricately spun web when we accidentally hit the tree it was located on! It quickly rolled up, hiding its head. The double projections sticking out of its abdomen gave away its identity! We spotted this one at the Arborteum of Threatened Philippine Trees, and it was the first yellow one we've seen! These spiders are native to many parts of Asia and Australia and come in a variety of colors including red, brown, orange, pink, or black! After a few seconds, the spider probably decided we weren't a threat and stretched out, revealing a pair of jagged white lines along two rows of shallow pit-like depressions in the front of its abdomen. Check out its spider web! Doesn't it remind you of a fisherman's net? This web can trap prey, but can also help camouflage the spider and the web by catching small debris like leaves!
