My good deed for the day - I rescued this beautiful little Holly Blue from a watery end this evening. Think it’s a female but hard to tell with wet wings. Found her upside down in a puddle on the Comber Road surrounded by cherry blossom (like a scene from “Melancholia”). Picked her up and carried her to the nearest bush that was still in sunlight. It was hawthorn but there was ivy higher up. Bill told us: "It was late afternoon in Puerto Egas, Santiago Island, Galapagos and the colourful Sally Light Foot Crabs were returning to the lava-rock-encrusted shoreline. I knew that when a wave came in, the crabs would lock down, holding on tight so they did not get washed away, so I set up my tripod and pre-focused on the rocks setting a very slow shutter speed to blur the moving water while keeping the stationary crab sharp." I've been really struggling trying to regulate my mind and mental state during thesis period that I think I'm gonna secretly, not so secretly quit for this year and try again next year. The exhibit will still happen just that It's been incredibly hard to stay productive in any sense of the word. At most I could muster commissions out of me, maybe. So instead of doing any of my responsibilities... Decided to draw something purely for myself that isn't fanart related either. Tho I might wanna draw Alan Wake stuff but who knows. (Those games are the only things that kept me sane and calmed me down that this all isn't this serious. I need to legit chill or I'm gonna get early gray hairs and more digestive issues.) I swear anytime I'm in doubt of if I'm autistic or not or at least some form of neurodivergent, a stressful time period shows up and absolutely wrecks me. It isn't even just mental health related. It's purely trying to regulate my mind and body in my situation. If I over stress. I tend to lock up. Get easily irritable and overwhelmed. What do these gay bugs got to do with anything? Nothing really. Other than my regular need for comfort and yearning for this kind of connection. It was just depressing to see my only "normal" art from me that came out this month is a random fortnite character sketch, random doodles and nothing else. It's not about being active online. It's about realizing that wow I have not been doing art for myself.... I've been thumbnailing a mini comic to practise, sketching some sculpture ideas... But I need to take it slow right now. Get back into things slowly.
Spotted Cranefly (Nephrotoma appendiculata) chowing down on a leaf. There is one other species, the Tiger Cranefly, that looks remarkably similar. From a picture like this, they're virtually indistinguishable. This individual, however, was found, amongst many others, in open sandy grassland, whereas the Tiger Cranefly is found in hedges and woodland. 🐞Another part to the ecology practical was collecting and identifying invertebrates. We collected them using nets, by hand and a device called an aspirator (a mini vacuum which you “suck” the insects into- not as bad as it sounds). After putting them into test tubes, we took them back to the lab where they were frozen for a short while (DOES NOT HARM THEM, simply puts them to sleep so they are easier to view under a microscope). We then viewed them under the microscope and identified their taxonomic group (e.g. Diptera (true flies), Coleoptera (beetles), Hymenoptera (ants, bees and wasps), Arachnida (spiders)). #insects #invertebrates 🕷️

Striped Millipede (Ommatoiulus sabulosus) Widespread and common across a variety of habitats, including meadows, trees, and sandy soils, this detritovorous scavenger helps break down plant matter into "humus," recycling nutrients through the ecosystem. They can occur in large numbers, many of which will end up feeding birds, amphibians, and reptiles. Two other species look very similar to this, but based on its size, the location, and time of day it was found, I'm fairly confident of the ID. Edit - I remembered I took a sample of a dead one. Porcellio laevis "Dairy Cow". I think someone (I forgot who, sorry) did some microscopic examination on this species and was proven to not be P. laevis. P. laevis "Milkback" was also proven to be able to reproduce with "Dairy Cow" and the microscopic examination on the Milkbacks also proved them to be the same species as the Dairy Cows. A bug’s life… 🪲 Back when it looked like Spring was still happening this year, we enjoyed a visit to @thebugparc in Lenwade near Dereham. 🐛 A new-ish and evolving attraction, it offers something novel in terms of days out in the fact that it is an ‘invertebrate zoo’. 🐜 Born from Owner Martin French’s personal hobby that got out of hand, the Bug Parc now houses hundreds of species of insects, gastropods and arachnids in three tropical invertebrate houses. As you wind your way through, you can safely get up close to these fascinating creatures including beetles, ants and, of course, spiders (though if these make you faint hearted, you can entirely avoid the spider rooms). In addition to the creatures themselves, there are educational pointers and resources throughout, designed to help us better understand these small-but-mighty life forms that share our planet.
