27 Feb. 2020 The big players are set to return to the battlefield in one month’s time when high speed foiling catamaran competition gets underway at the GC32 Oman Cup, first of five events comprising the 2020 GC32 Racing Tour. Throughout the 2019 GC32 Racing Tour two teams were at each other’s throats. The Adam Minoprio-skippered Oman Air won the first and third events of the season while Ernesto Bertarelli’s Alinghi team claimed the second and fourth, including the coveted GC32 World Championship title in Lagos, Portugal. This left these teams neck and neck going into the final event in Oman in early November. Here ultimately the Swiss prevailed, adding the 2019 GC32 Racing Tour title to their impressive collection of silverware for the year... Highlight of the week: GC32 Class Oman Cup 2019 🇴🇲⛵️ . Big final on Sunday for the GC32 crews with Team Alinghi as the clear winner of the GC32 Oman Cup and 2019 GC32 Racing Tour. . Coming into the final event, Alinghi was tied on points with Oman Airbut Alinghi never missed a beat, leading from the outset and surprisingly being her main competitor Erik Maris’ Zoulou. Sadly coming up the first beat in the first race, Adam Minoprio’s Oman Air misjudged ducking Zoulou and his boat’s port bow impaled itself in Zoulou’s port topside which stayed afloat long enough to get back into the Al Mouj Marina and be craned out, while Oman Air missed one race and won the final one, which gave them the second position overall leaving behind Zoulou. . With the wind and sea state, the final two races were cancelled, but Alinghi was claimed winner after taking the bullet in the second race of the day. . Highlight of the week: GC32 Oman Cup 2019 🇴🇲⛵️ . Light and lake-like conditions were expected for the second day of the GC32 Oman Cup but the breeze surprised the crews with a vital couple of knots more allowing the catamarans to fly fully. In this day of competition, the crews tried to find new ways to get the best from their boats. . In this way, Zoulou became the undisputed winner of the day with a 1-2-2-2-1 scoreline impressively consistent given the gusty conditions, jumping to the second position in the GC32 Oman Cup leaderboard just a point behind Alinghi. . Oman Air and Alinghi had a little mishap during the races at the competition. The two tied-up teams got too close in a race and in a classic match race manoeuvre down by the pin, Alinghi on port failed to keep of Oman Air on starboard and bumped. So, Alinghi were penalized two points for being for their mistake, and Oman Air was docked one, leaving him in the third position. . GC32 Racing Tour . Alinghi was the leader at the end of every day of racing, but on the final day, the team was on the ropes when their arch-rivals, Oman Air, became unbeatable and scored three wins levelling with them. . With just to races to go, the Omani team’s winning streak came to end, but they managed to end in second place handing two-point lead going into the final race. The Ernesto Bertarelli’s Alinghi team claimed the 2019 GC32 World Championship title, leading by 16 points and scoring a 2-1-1 in the last day of races. Incredible results given the calibre of competition in Lagos, Portugal. . The Sébastien Schneiter-skippered Team Tilt also had an exceptional day, starting out with a win in the first race and then they scored no results worse than a fifth, leading them to the second overall. . INEOS Rebels UK took the final position of the podium by a point from the second position, because two collisions for which the British team picked up three penalty points. .
