This weekend was Team Gonzo's first sailing adventure of the year. After a slightly delayed start due to a missing boom, @jamielewisrogers and I headed to Loch Earn Sailing Club for the opening event of the @rs400sailing Scottish tour. Saturday was a day of training and it was great to see 3 new boats to the tour on the water. The wind was light but we managed to get out for some upwind and downwind drills. After the training finished the wind gusted to a Force 2/3 and Jamie and I had a couple of short blasts down wind. We headed back to shore and about 5 minutes later the wind completely died. Sunday was race day. We had a good start of the first race getting to the windward mark first, unfortunately it went downhill from there as the wind dropped. Gonzo felt like we had thrown an anchor out and we ended at the back of the fleet. Race 2 and 3 were games of snakes and ladders, with 180 degree wind swings, gentle gusts and holes across the course. We finished mid fleet in both. There was a short lunch stop to warm up and eat before some of the RS 400 fleet headed back out. The wind was thankfully more constant with it remaining from one direction. Well would you look at that beautiful deck..! 🤩 7 months of removing all fittings, old teak deck removal, probably a thousand screws and bolts to coerce out, hours and hours of sanding, reglassing and fibreglass repairs, and sanding again, then laying new deck, and refitting now freshly serviced, polished or brand new fittings… and Lyanna finally looks worthy of her Oyster name again. We chose to go with @evo_decking for their absolutely beautiful weathered finish, and could not be happier with the result. Huge thanks to the wonderful @theteakmen for a job very well done! In 1910 Morton Plant commissioned Elena to be designed by American naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff, the “Wizard of Bristol”, who was famed for designing sailing yachts for America’s elite. Plant gave a wonderful design brief: build me a schooner that can win! Herreshoff gave Elena a slightly deeper keel than preceding designs of that time, lowering her centre of ballast, which improved her windward ability. Fresh out of the shed, ELENA won most of her early races against the cream of the American schooner fleet. Seventeen years later came her crowning glory - victory in the 1928 Trans-Atlantic Race.
