••• “Punky Magnolia” I almost didn’t post this because it didn’t come out like all the rest. But I want to show wood in all of its stages of life. This Magnolia limb was trimmed back/limbed by the power company. Its limbs were too close to the power lines. The limbs were sitting on the ground for years. As you can see here, the wood was already starting to decompose. It had a fungus on it. You can see that in the print. The dark squiggly lines that form weird shapes, that’s the fungus. The wood was incredibly soft and punky. This making it hard to print. But I want to print it all! (The picture of the piece of magnolia is not the piece that I printed but from the same limb.) Then the tree came down after a heavy rain. The ground was too saturated and the tree too top heavy. It fell across the road. And it was cleared by the city. I was able to get a piece. ••• Day 17 of 30 prints ***FOR SALE*** (link in bio or story) “Gators Gonna Getchu” 38” x 25” (this one is big) Relief print of Eastern Red Cedar on natural paper using black ink When I lived in Charleston, South Carolina, I did a lot of floors in Kiawah Island (it’s a beautiful island in the low country surrounded by marshland.). My boss and I would carry our Castnets in the van with us. Every day after work, we’d stop by one of the inlets and we would throw out our nets, and if we were lucky, catching enough shrimp to have dinner that night. We would always stop by the gas station and get a drink before our long drive home. And the lady behind the counter would always ask why we were wet. And I said that we had been fishing. She said in her thick Geechee accent “don’t go down by that water, them gators gonna get you Boy.” I laughed and she laughed. I named this print after her. Because every time I see an alligator, I think of her. This is from a cedar stump that was growing on the side of a hill. I cut it flush with the ground. ••• Wound Sealing Post Oak relief print on natural paper using paynes grey ink. 21” x 17” This is from a series of prints that shows how a limb starts to form, grows outward from the pith, heals itself from a broken limb, and continues to grow. I will have these prints hanging up in succession. Here, the limb was broken off from the tree. You can see how the tree healed and sealed the wound. Notice the medullary rays changing directions where it sealed itself. The ray fleck goes from looking like quarter/rift sawn to straight endgrain within a few inches. Oak symbolizes strength, wisdom, aspiration and resilience! There’s so much detail in this upcoming Oak series. My favorite part of printing oak is how the medullary rays show up in the print. ••• Chestnut Relief Print on natural paper using paynes grey ink. 21” x 17” This is the crotch of the tree. The crotch is the center part of a tree just below where the tree bifurcates. That trunk of the tree is still connecting two separate limbs that are splitting and going in two different directions. Trying to become independent. You can see how the grain is chaotic during the split. But out of the chaos comes two separate branches or limbs that have their own individual purpose. The division is where the beauty happens.
