It was a busy, yet productive weekend! My new @dubiaroaches 4'x2'x2' enclosures came on Friday! Super impressed with the quality for the price and literally obsessed with them! I started caulking and building backgrounds for the skinks eventual bioactive enclosures (those who are pros at this please be kind, these are my first builds. Any tips, or tricks definitely welcome!). I have a vision, hoping to get them to mimic the few pictures I could find of the Halmahera Islands in Indonesia. I want to try to replicate their natural environment more and hopefully that will bring me luck when breeding season comes around since Halmahera Blue Tongues are known to be difficult/impossible to breed. Lots of foam to shape and paint but I'm excited for it. This weekend was also the @sacreptileshow which was awesome as usual, got in early with presale tickets and was able to avoid most of the crowds for a bit. @snake.discovery was there which was super cool, didn't get to do a meet an greet but it looked like the kids were having a blast, loved seeing Emily and Ed's energy and how many people they bring into the reptile world and hobby! I was hoping to find some nice sticks for my enclosure builds but everything was a little more than I budgeted for so looks like I'll be using the manzanita I have already and maybe find some more locally. I did get a good deal on some UVB hoods and bulbs from @lllreptile which I'm super excited for! On the way home from Sac we stopped at home Depot for topsoil, some rock for my drainage layer, and some plants and I found two of my bucket list plants I have been wanting for years and could never find! A Raven ZZ plant and a Pink Princess Philodendron! I'm super behind on posting, it's been a rough couple weeks, but wanted to show off this pretty new girl. I won her on the @morphmarket auctions from @gray_family_snakes ! She is a Mahogany 50% Het Pied. What really called to me was how dark she is and her interesting alien head patterning as well. Hoping to test her to see if she's het pied but even if she isn't she will be staying as I think she's gorgeous and can definitely still use her. She has a fantastic personality, she reminds me so much of one of my first ball pythons, Ember, whom I lost to Nidovirus in 2022 (for the story see my website, link in bio). I wanted to give this girl a tribute name in memory of Ember, and landed on Safara, which means "fire" in the African Wolof language. Also, I wanted to give a massive shout out to Grey Family Snakes for one of the best reptile purchasing experiences I've been through! Safara arrived healthy, with secure and adorable packaging. Question. Does anyone know if a female ball pythons can retain sperm if she built follicles and reabsorbed last season? My 2100 gram female has been putting on weight and acting like she is building follicles and ovulating but she has not been bred since last October. Curious to know if it could be retained sperm or if she could be doing parthnogenisis. First pic is from today, the second one is from July.

I colorized my logo last night, took awhile for me to decide what morph I wanted to make the snake. And I wanted to also incorporate the purples from the mountains and the lupines. I ended up modeling it after Taffy, my banana mystic boy. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Ended up not having to work yesterday at the last minute and decided to go to the @vallejoreptileshow ! It was a pretty cool show. We saw some nice high end ball pythons which was really neat. I normally don't see higher end stuff at shows. Ended up coming home with this beautiful Black Pastel het Pied girl. She is going to produce gorgeous babies, and I had to have her! I've been wanting to get into the Black Pastel gene for a bit so I'm super excited for her. Hoping to get some Black Pastel Banana Pieds when she is old enough to be put with with my Banana Mystic Het Pied. 🤞 She is currently quarantined away from everyone else and will be tested along with the other snakes I have left to test for Nido. Biosecurity is super important to me now so everyone will be tested on intake. Thank you to @no_limit_royals for this gorgeous girl, I'm very pleased with her quality! 🔥

So, I did some research and spent the last few days considering my options with Meeko. Since he is completely asymptomatic and healthy I decided to try to find him a pet only home. I was lucky enough to find him literally the best home with a friend, and he is going to be so happy there! He is even going to have kids loving on him which he is going to be all about. He left for his new home this evening, we are going to miss him, but he is in good hands and I'm so glad I didn't have to put him down. All I can say is test your animals. It is affordable and honestly for the betterment of your animals. Test on intake at the very least. Had I known Nido wasn't just a scary boogyman, and an actual threat, I would have been doing it a long time ago. Feel free to message me if you have any questions about testing or anything else! Hey all. Sorry I have been MIA. I have some sad news to report. Last weekend I lost my sweet Ember. The vet had prescribed another antibiotic and at first it seemed to be helping and then she went back down hill. I had decided I wanted to test her again for Nidovirus thinking maybe I had gotten a false negative. I ordered more swabs and they got here a day before she passed away. I had done the test anyways, and she was indeed positive for Nido. I also tested Pyro, Meeko, Calypso, and Nestle since I got a five pack of swabs. I couldn't afford to test all my snakes at one time but thought five was a good start. Turns out Meeko is also positive for Nido. And now I'm faced with the impossible decision to euthanize him or risk him infecting the rest of my collection even though he is completely asymptomatic. He is quarantined at the moment, but does anyone know anything about a lab or private party needing nidovirus positive snakes to test or use to research for a cure? I'd feel better about him going to use towards a cure than just being euthanized but so far I cannot find any leads on anything. Any suggestions or help would be SO appreciated. Also, we need to do more as a community to test and make sure we are not spreading this to others collections, the fact that testing isn't standard is disturbing. I only recently found out about Nido because it's so hush hush. That's unacceptable. We as a community need to do better. I will be testing the rest of my collection and testing on intake of ALL new snakes. I don't care if this gets me blacklisted. Good news! Ember is doing quite a bit better! Her Nidovirus test came back negative (THANK GOODNESS), the antibiotic shot the vet gave her seems to be helping clear up the mucus, and she ate a small rat yesterday. Should hear back from the vet what the results of the culture are any day now! But that's the update! I'd like to hold the benefit SPIN TO WIN soon so if you were thinking about getting in on it now is the time, there are 27 spots left! More info thre posts back!
So, Ember had her vet appointment yesterday. She is very unwell which I knew. The doctor says the swelling in her lower half is all from gas build up from straining to breathe. He did a (very expensive) culture that will test for fungal, bacterial and viral infections so we hopefully know what we are dealing with. I'm still waiting for the results for the nidovirus test results, there was a hang up at the testing facility. But I should have both results next week. For now, the doctor gave her a super heavy duty antibiotic injection that will last a few days. And sent her home with some heav duty antibiotics to give her via mouth which I'm happy about because she did not like the shots at all. He also gave her some nasal drops to help with the mucus build up. But yeah, that's the update so far! The raffle fundraiser is still open (it will be until filled) you can find it two posts back if you'd like to help with the extra testing (I would appreciate it from the bottom of my heart!) ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Ember's Nidovirus test should be here today. It takes a bit to get the results back but I'm really hoping it's negative. After we test for this I will be taking her to the vet to determine what to do once we get the results. If it's negative the vet wants to do a culture which will be $300, but it should give us an idea of what is going on. I don't want to even think about if it is positive. But I know it is part of keeping snakes, I just am hoping it doesn't come to that. Her fundraiser raffle is still going, it's the post before this one. Any and all help is much appreciated since this happened and a really inconvenient time.

I was cleaning the racks today and realized I haven't done an update on Calypso in awhile. Unfortunately, it appears she has reabsorbed her follicles which means she will not be having eggs. To say I'm bummed is an understatement, but this whole thing has been a great learning experience! I'm not giving up, just going to wait until the next season and hopefully by then she will be ready. 🤞
