Over the weekend, I found what was probably one of the most unique looking Eastern Garters (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) I had ever seen. When I flipped the rock and saw this little juvenile, I thought nice, I rarely ever see DeKay’s Browns in the mountains. But after a few seconds, I realized that this cute little critter was actually a Garter. I’ve seen others with similar tannish/brownish colors (especially in the VA, MD, WV mountains), but I don’t think I’ve seen ‘em without any of the black colors that can be seen in at least some of the scales (even if only a little). Point being, even though there are definitely scientific reasons & explanations for some of these color variations, I guess they just don’t make Garters in other places like they do in the mountains! "Zviiit .... Zviiit " après les pluies du mois d'avril, retentit le chant aiguie et strident de la Centrolène de Kaw (Hyalinobatrachium kawense). Une petite grenouille de verre, qui jusqu'à récemment était considérée comme très rare et endémique du Nord est de la Guyane. Pourtant celle ci est finalement très commune, mais son chant est si ténu, et celle ci est si discrète ( pas plus de 2 cm) qu'elle est souvent passé inaperçu. Si aujourd'hui son chant ne nous échappe plus, elle reste très difficile à voire. Une minuscule boule verdâtre qui pousse son cris à 5 mètre au dessus des criques. Rhinoderma darwinii - Parque Nacional Puyehue, Región de los Ríos. Como primer anfibio que subo, quería dejar registro de mi encuentro con la famosa Ranita de Darwin. En un paseo improvisado, con poca preparación (no lleve parca), en medio del Parque Nacional Puyehue, en uno de los senderos cuyo nombre ya no recuerdo (solo que había un puente cortado), se largo a llover. A mí, por supuesto, la lluvia no me molestaba, después de todo, era un agrado sentir gotas en la cara tras años de sequía. La cámara no estaba muy de acuerdo conmigo, así que, viendo que el bolso no soportaba la lluvia lo suficiente y que los árboles no nos cubrían completamente, decidimos devolvernos (también eran como las 4 de la tarde y no habíamos almorzado/llevado almuerzo). Pero yo sabía que este era un momento especial. A medida que la humedad logró tocar el suelo de la selva valdiviana, cientos de voces se elevaron para cada uno cantar su propia obra: el bosque se inundó de un coro de ranas y sapos. Emocionada por tal suceso, entre cada acelerada para no mojarnos tanto, observaba atentamente, en busca de alguno de los cantantes, especialmente si significaba ver alguna especie que no alcanza a llegar al campo. Sin embargo, ninguna parecía querer mostrarse. En nuestra vuelta, las nubes se disiparon para darle paso al sol nuevamente, iluminando pequeños trazos de claros en medio del bosque. Entre ellos, en un tronco oscurecido, cubierto de musgo y gotas, una curiosa hoja llamó mi atención. Fue cuando, tras fijar la mirada, me di cuenta lo que realmente estaba viendo. Sinceramente no podía creerlo. Casi pego un grito y muy feliz, le dije a mis compañeros lo que estaba viendo. Oculto a plena vista, entre el musgo, me devolvía la mirada. Lifer Spotted As a lover of all reptiles, especially turtles, one of my goals is to find all species of turtles native to New Jersey. I have most checked off, even the critically endangered Bog Turtle, but one that I’ve been missing is the Spotted Turtle. Well, that was until today when I found this guy basking in the warm spring sun! Like a handful of other turtles in the state, spotted turtles are often targeted by poachers for the pet trade and are illegally taken when found. I was absolutely THRILLED to have found this species. If you dont know what this species is, its called the Green Jararaca, Bothrops bilineatus. Out of all the snakes i've seen here @hojanueva this one has taken the crown so far, itll be hard to beat. Everything about this snake is stunning, the fact that the speckling continues on in the eyes is INSANE, it just goes to show how well camoflauged this species can be. I found five Coastal Giant salamanders recently at three different spots, but this one was by far the largest and the only one not in the more larval phase. Sometimes you just have to wait... I happened to snag this common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus) in the shallows at the edge of the creek behind the house. As most turtles do, it retreated into its shell, hoping I couldn't bite through his protective armor and would leave it alone. After some shots of it in the shell (photos 5 and 6), I decided to put it down next to the water, then stand a few feet away with my camera ready to see if it would move. What I got was 30 minutes of this turtle slowly poking its head out, keeping its eye on me and never moving its legs, wary I might pounce again once its fragile head was exposed. It didn't move, and I eventually decided to keep hiking, leaving it there to feel a bit safer. It's a fun case for reptiles having personalities. Some musk turtles try to bite and run the whole time you hold them; others retreat into their shells and wait for danger to pass. Two-striped Garter Snake (Thamnophis hammondii)- Southern California A highly aquatic species of garter snake found along the Central Coast of California south into parts of Baja California. While abundant in some areas, these snakes have been extirpated from some parts of their historic range due to habitat loss. On a personal note, this snake represents one of the few remaining Thamnophis species and subspecies I have yet to see in the state. California boasts the largest species diversity of garter snakes in North America and many are quite localized in certain regions. This snake was observed basking in a riparian zone within fairly xeric creosote scrub / mixed oak grassland chaparral. Plain-Bellied Water Snake(Nerodia erythrogaster) -harmless Erthrogaster meaning red-bellied better describes the vibrant undersides of these snakes, though the common name does help distinguish this species from other Nerodia which have checkered bellies. It’s been reported that they can give live birth to as many as 50 neonates in one litter! Linzey and Clifford(1981) First intentional find of the season for me, apart from a few not so photogenic skinks. Hopefully many more to come.
