Coming from a biome where most snakes are terrestrial, we were both habitually scanning the ground when all of a sudden we noticed scales coiled around a branch at head height. Looking into these enormous eyes and googling over the visual acuity this thing surely has was just delightful. Incredibly busy turtle day! 1) Mary and Sam kick things off by continuing to be turtle Rockstars and conpleted behavior assays with 2 turtles found yesterday. They have been coming in at all hours to help out I just never get nice lab photos of them which does a real disservice to how much cool stuff (and work) they do (like Mary fixing our campus turtle's transmitter this weekend while I was at a conference; pictured). 2) Kaitlyn, Brookelynn, and Teryn set aquatic turtle traps with me at 630am and my vertebrate zoology class checked them later in the day. 3) Chris and Ethan found 3(!) turtles without transmitters, including a new male and a lost female. Ethan must be good luck. 4) Brookelynn, Savannah, and Christa find M090 (Peter Parker) on a bet without using telemetry. Well played. 5) I found a lost male (transmitter likely got knocked off by a cow) and a young juvenile Mogli first found last year. April 29, 2024 AMPHIBIAN OF INTEREST: 🐸 Nyctimantis Brunoi 🐸 AKA Bruno's Casque-Headed Frog These cute little bastards are native to the tropical forests and marshes of Brazil, and are considered a species of "Least Concern" by the International Union For Conservation Of Nature. Bruno's Casque-Headed Frogs are most notable for being one of only two known venomous frogs. Their skulls have boney spines that can pierce through their skin, injecting venom into their targets. This is an incredibly rare adaptation for frogs, and their venom is said to be over 20 times more toxic than that of pit viper snakes. Smooth green snakes (Opheodrys vernalis) is a heavy contender for my favourite Ontario snake species. Observing this one brought to mind some inherent flaws in how we approach species conservation. With the current system, there is little funding for studying species that are not at risk. These cryptic little snakes are definitely one of the many victims of the relentless malaise that we call "progress". More needs to be done to prevent species from getting to the point where their populations are at risk of extinction. Knowledge informs action and action is what is needed to protect our wildlife.

Let’s not do any skinny-shaming. The Channel Islands slender salamander can’t help the way it’s built. For this salamander and the other salamanders in its genus (group), the word “slender” is right there in their names. Someone was feeling entitled to comment on their bodies. Their bodies are highly functional and well adapted to their environments. For example, Channel Islands slender salamanders tend to curl up when they detect a threat; they stay still and rely on their great camouflage. Salamanders in this genus have also been reported to very quickly coil and uncoil their bodies like a spring, which can result in propelling themselves as far as almost two feet along the ground. This can serve to confuse or startle would-be predators. Plus, these salamanders will detach their tails, which then wriggle on the ground to create a distraction so that they can get away. Clearly, Channel Islands slender salamanders have amazing bodies capable of amazing things. And instead of drawing attention to their narrow silhouettes, perhaps we should focus on the fact that their range is narrow. They’re found only on four of California’s Channel Islands, Anacapa, San Miguel, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa. Sometimes you just have to wait... I happened to snag this common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus) in the shallows at the edge of the creek behind the house. As most turtles do, it retreated into its shell, hoping I couldn't bite through his protective armor and would leave it alone. After some shots of it in the shell (photos 5 and 6), I decided to put it down next to the water, then stand a few feet away with my camera ready to see if it would move. What I got was 30 minutes of this turtle slowly poking its head out, keeping its eye on me and never moving its legs, wary I might pounce again once its fragile head was exposed. It didn't move, and I eventually decided to keep hiking, leaving it there to feel a bit safer. It's a fun case for reptiles having personalities. Some musk turtles try to bite and run the whole time you hold them; others retreat into their shells and wait for danger to pass. Entretanto, estas mesmas pistas químicas podem levá-los a exibir comportamentos atípicos quando atraídos para fêmeas mortas recentemente, como a necrofilia ou comportamento de Davian. Em março de 2009, Costa e colaboradores flagraram um lagarto macho Ameiva ameiva tentando copular com uma fêmea coespecífica morta. Quinze anos depois, revisitamos o registro da “noiva cadáver” para responder algumas questões remanescentes e para fornecer novas informações que podem estar relacionadas a outros aspectos da biologia reprodutiva da espécie. A análise macroscópica do trato reprodutivo da fêmea não revelou sinais de que ovos haviam sido alocados nos ovidutos recentemente. Durante a análise microscópica das regiões do oviduto (infundíbulo posterior, útero glandular e útero aglandular) encontramos grandes quantidades de espermatozoides, confirmando que a cópula ocorreu. Por fim, a análise microscópica das glândulas femorais mostrou que o ducto principal estava preenchido por um plug de secreção de compostos químicos que incluem mucopolissacarídeos neutros. Isso indica que no momento da morte a fêmea estava liberando fragmentos desse plug no ambiente, deixando pistas químicas que chamaram a atenção do macho. El día de ayer se conmemoro el día mundial de los anfibios, 28 de Abril🐸, jornada señalada en el candelario medio ambiental por la Secretaría de Medio y Ambiente y Recursos naturales. Sin duda uno de los grupos de vertebrados más amenazados a nivel mundial, derivado de varios factores a los que se enfrentan y estos lamentablemente se encuentran en incremento. La clase Amphibia representada por 3 órdenes: Anura (dónde se encuentran los sapos y las ranas), Caudata (dónde se encuentran las salamandras y tritones) y Gymophiona (dónde se encuentran las cecilias, a menudo confundidas con lombrices por su morfología). México se encuentra como el quinto país en riqueza de anfibios, contando con alrededor de 376 especies, teniendo un nivel de endemismo bastante alto, colocándose en primer lugar con más diversidad el estado de Oaxaca por su gran historia geológica que ha proveído una gran diversificación de ecosistemas, y en segundo lugar se encuentra el estado de Chiapas, de acuerdo a (Gabriela, 2014).
