Woodhouses Toad (Anaxyrus woodhousii woodhousii) On the rare occasion that I do get to see this species, I almost never take pictures of them because they are one of the worst models on this planet. Any chance they get, they’ll hop away moments before my camera focuses on them. This ugly little fella was no exception. Luckily Aaron took 5-7 business days to photograph a speck we had just found so in the meantime I was occupied with this guy. After getting him posed, focusing my camera, watching him hop away then repeating the process fifteen different times, I was finally able to get a shot that I wanted! They dance.....or do they? The Beautiful dancing frog (Micrixalus adonis) belongs to the genus Micrixalus, which comprises of dancing frogs from the southern western ghats of India. The name is given by their unique breeding behaviour. During breeding, the males, in addition to vocalising, also display a foot flagging behaviour. Humans, with their anthropomorphic thinking, have equated this to dance. The 'beautiful' in the common name refers to the vividly rich colouration of the species. Is it safe out there? This Emerald glass frog is pondering making a leap for it into the unknown. I was absolutely thrilled to see this little fellow in the Ecuadorian cloud forest. These delicate, beautiful frogs get their name from their near-transparent undersides. If you’ve ever wanted to see the internal organs of a frog at work, this is your - oh god why Unfortunately having your organs and circulatory system on display can be a bit of a downer for camouflage, so glass frogs have a pretty neat trick. They can hide their blood in their liver to make themselves even more transparent. Western Brown Snake (Pseudonaja mengdeni). At what is likely only a few weeks old this is the smallest brown snake I’ve ever seen. It is incredible how much this juvenile brown snake looks like a harmless western hooded scaly foot (Pygopus nigriceps) shown in the second image which we got on the same survey. An absolutely massive Eastern king found patrolling the edge of a marsh midday, at about 82 degrees. This was a huge snake, maybe 5ft, and he met his captor (me) head on with one hell of a bite to the arm. This is my first Eastern king since 2018, so I was beyond thrilled to see it. The marsh is known cottonmouth habitat, so I have little doubt that they are part of what's helped him grow so large. This is also the best looking getula I've seen with perfect banding and contrast. Save The Frogs Day! Banded-limb Glassfrog - Hyalinobatrachium cappellei (Van Lidth de Jeude, 1904) Today, on April 28th, we celebrate the International Save The Frogs Day. For me, there are no more fitting images to represent this occasion! This year, I had the privilege to explore the Amazon. It is a truly impressive biome teeming with biodiversity! For about 40 days, I delved into the fantastic herpetofauna of this region, and I am immensely grateful for the invitation from @herping_brasil to join this expedition! After more than 30 days of listening to the distinct calls of Glassfrog males echoing through the treetops — at impressive heights of 7 to 8 meters (with less than ideal conditions for photography) — I had a unique experience in the last week of the expedition. I was fortunate to hear a male calling in a small bush, less than 2 meters from the ground. To my surprise, it was not only performing an advertisement call; it was also taking care of its offspring! In this species, parental responsibility falls on the males. Through their calls, males attract females. After amplexus, females deposit their eggs on the underside of a leaf, which hangs over a stream. It is at this point that the male takes over the care of the eggs. It remains on the leaf throughout the day, protecting them from predators and ensuring their hydration. Well this happened a few weeks ago… I have looked for both of the eastern U.S. Coral Snake species on and off while popping in and out of their range for years now. ~Malayan Banded Coral Snake (Calliophis intestinalis)~ You hear about road-cruising a lot, and for someone young in Singapore with no car, road-cruising will become road-walking. It's more exhausting, you're likely to miss more things crossing the road, but every now and then I guess you'll luck out. We've found O. octolineatus on the road before, now we found this near the side of the road crossing. I still find it hilarious how this year I've seen more bivirgata than intestinalis. A zippy little lifer in the form of a juvenile Cape Sand Snake (Psammophis leightoni). The species occurs in three distinct forms that were, until quite recently, considered separate species. As such, this particular individual was once known as a Fork-marked Sand Snake (P. trinasalis), in lieu of the unique patterns on the head. Like all Psammophis, they are mildly venomous and extremely fast, feeding primarily on the various lizards that share their arid habitat.

Rhacophorus rhodopus New record for Phuket!!! Although this species has been heard calling by a few people before, this is the first official sighting of one (to my knowledge). While I was herping late in the night, I decided to try a new path that I had never been on before. As I was walking through, I could see plenty of life and then this frog that caught my eye. At first glance, I thought to myself it was a normal tree frog, but something looked off. I decided to get a closer look and instantly couldn't believe my eyes. Was hoping the warmer weather today would bring snakes but and ended up finding only blue spotted salamanders (total of 5 or so). Somebody was smashing up alot of the more decayed logs along the trail / leaving them flipped over and not putting them back. I can only hope it wasn't intentional/out of ignorance - always put the logs back exactly as you found them if you move em! On the upside the trilliums and grey treefrogs were out, and the vernal pools still look pretty full!
